I swear by Merrells. They are super durable and last forever (Hiking and backpacking boots). Their combat boots are great as well and are more light weight and very water resistant. If they fit your foot, you can't go wrong. No other boot/shoe fits my foot as nice. Your mileage may vary. Keen is also nice but I have found that they don't last very long. However they are comfortable and I do like the odd shaped toe box. IMO.

Nice video Pete! You covered some cool stuff besides the basics. As well! That PLB beacon looks pretty cool 📡

Thx, mate. Yeah, those little things are amazing. Hopefully, like insurance, I’ll never need it.

Great video Peter and lots of great advice. There are a couple of things that I would add from many decades of bushwalking and spending time in wilderness areas. If you are going out into the bush always take a map and compass or GPS and know how to use them. I personally prefer a map and compass because I have been in a number of situations where the GPS could not get a fix on the satellites. Next item - always take some food. Usually protein bars and/or trail mix. This is especially important if, like me, you are a diabetic. Your blood sugar and electrolytes can drop very suddenly out on the trail. I always ensure that I have basic gear to stay out a night if circumstances demand, such as becoming geographically embarrassed and having to wait until morning. So I add a space blanket to keep warm and a lightweight poncho and cordage. The poncho can serve as a shelter or rain gear. In the military I learned the principle of the 7 Ps. Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. It has saved my arse on more than one occasion.

Good points, John - all of them. Frankly, I could have added a tonne of things to the list, but then the video - which was already way too long - would have been twice as long again. I like the way you added a seventh 'P'! 😄

I love that your tips are always practical and with a bit of underlying humor - well, dying in the bush ("with a camera and two lenses", dehydrated and snake bitten) might not be so funny, but definitely painted the picture in your cheeky way! Oh, and I turned on the closed caption just to check how knackered is spelled and it was translated as "naked". Whoa! Another potentially 'cheeky' picture that I was glad NOT to see. HA!! I loved that you added about bringing the right attitude - it's the best priceless treasure in the bag!

Haha!! Yeah, that's all the world needs - a naked 54-year-old male landscape photographer! Thanks for your support, Juanita. You always make me smile. 🙂

Thanks Peter .. I've most of what you mentioned plus a lens warmer and small battery pack. Useful in early morning and astro photography, and hand warming too. Oh .. and a tall foldable seat and I wear gaiters. Nearly 4 time 3 minutes ... talkative bugger you are ... but enjoyable all the way through.

LOL - I know, I can’t seem to shut up. I guess it’s just not possible for me to explain something in 3 minutes! A lens warmer - cool. I mean, warm. What part of the world are you in, Rob?

Great video with great advice. Here in Canada when I go out in the middle of winter and it’s -25C I bring a thermos of hot coffee to warm up my aging bones.

Interesting how snakes become a landscape photography issue in Australia, or rather obviously an outdoors issue. Probably in many other places too, still, never though about it that much here in Germany.

I know - they're bloody dangerous over hear - especially the King Brown and Tiger snakes. My dad had one sitting outside his back door a while back. Great way to wake up in the morning!

A crop sensor camera is MORE than enough. Some of the best landscape photographers still regularly use crop sensor cameras. Look up a guy called Andy Mumford. He’s taken some incredible shots of Tuscany and the Dolomites with Fuji XT series cameras.
