Thanks for the review! I've been leaning more and more towards the BP filters. I have a set of circular NDs from them, but am ready for the square filter system.

Been using a Breakthrough 6-stop ND for several years. Best ND filter I've ever had. Good company. They put a lot of thought into their stuff.

Hi Adam I've been using Breakthrough Filters since I became serious with photography. I bought some Lee ND Square filters, but was never impressed with them. But since discovering Breakthrough, I've found my brand. I keep a UV filter on each of my lenses, and am able to easily stack the X4 CPL filter on it. My only issue with stacking the CPL filter is it periodically gets stuck on. The ladies at Breakthrough gave some helpful advice, and it's not a serious or consistent problem now. Having recently upgraded to a Nikon Z7II camera with the 14-24 f2.8 S lens, I was thrilled to see that Breakthrough has collaborated with Nikon in producing a complete line of filters for that lens. Thank you for your consistently helpful tutorials, and your always interesting Vlogs. I really & truly enjoy them. Just don't let Gavin get the best of you! 😉 Cheers...

Thanks so much for this review. I’m new to filter usage and long exposure. Initially I didn’t know where to start with filters so I bought cheap eBay filters to try out. Lucky I did, because I learned a few things about filters without spending too much. The quality of glass, lens reflections, issues with vignette, ghosting and colour casting. Things I didn’t know I needed to consider being new to filters. You answered all my questions in this video. Beautiful photos too. Will be getting some Breakthrough filters. Thank You!!

Good to start somewhere, a cheap filter is not a bad idea to get going with and then invest in the higher quality ones later. Thanks, Angelo!

Adam Gibbs one more thing I forgot to mention. Good work on showing the unprocessed images with and without filters. So many reviews showed images with the filters, but never mention if they have been processed. This is a big help as it’s good to see what they look like before processing. Very well presented with images and text. Love your content!

I agree it's a great setup. The 14-24mm is an awesome lens as well but a pain to carry and an even bigger pain to use with filters. Thanks, John!

I have a Breakthrough polarizer and several UV in 77 mm . I like them but my main filters are NISI brand 75 and 100 mm series. I use the 75 series on my Canon M series , and the 100 series with my all my Canon 5d series cameras.

Great video Adam, I liked the mitten test at the end! I use LEE filters and I'm really happy with the filter holder system and the ND filters they make. For my polarizer I use a B + W filter.

I'm giving you a thumbs up with mitts on. I've been doing a lot of cold weather and night photography lately and find, as I've become more familiar with my gear, I'm able to do a lot with gloves on and no headlamp. But sometimes I have to remove a glove and turn on a torch. Then I get a cold hand and it takes awhile to recover. I find myself setting up timed exposures, release the shutter, step back away from the the tripod and do a warm up dance careful not to cause little earth tremors.

nice job on the video. Luckily I was able to invested into the breakthrough filters (pre-holder system) but the screw on systems are still amazing. went with the X4 3,6,10, and polarizer. the step up rings for the screw on system really makes a HUGE difference for ease of use with other lens instead of having to buy a completely new set of filters if you prefer the screw on system
@QuietLightPhoto

Thanks, Brandon! I am equally impressed with the Breakthrough filters. In my latest vlogs, I talk a little bit about the filters. My next video I mention the holder and grad filters as well. A couple of weeks ago I had a chance to give the X4 3ND filter out, works great for slowing the shutter down without having to stack filters. I generally just use the screw on filters when I'm hiking or backpacking just to cut down on bulk and weight. Thanks for the feedback, very much appreciated.

Just came across this video. I purchased a 6 stop ND filter from Breakthrough a few years ago. I tried various other brands but they all produced colour casts. I've been really happy with the Breakthrough ND filter, I haven't noticed any colour cast! Like you mentioned you can always remove casting in LR or PS but it can be a pain when it's not consistent throughout the frame. With the 6 stop my camera will still focus in most situations so I don't have focus and than put the filter on. I've dropped this filter numerous times on rocks etc. and it never cracked. I would definitely recommend Breakthrough. Cheers.

I had never heard of the Breakthrough filters until I heard you mention them in another video of yours I watched. I started reading more about them, and they seemed to get very good reviews. My wife and I are traveling to Vancouver Island on September 14 for about 6 days, so I have watched all your videos from there to get ideas of good spots to look for. Also based on watching this video, I purchased the Breakthrough polarizer, the 3 stop ND and the 6 stop ND. I have been using Hitech square filters, but they are extremely fragile and will scratch easily, something I was not happy with. I can't wait to try out the round filters. I've already received them, and the machining is excellent, and my limited use of the polarizer so far has been very favorable. Maybe I'll bump into you on the trails. Keep up the good work.
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
I am very happy with the quality for sure. I just received some new magnetic filters that I'll hopefully get to try out soon, the concept is quite neat as the filters do not have a thread but fasten with a magnet.

Besides Nisi, Singh-Ray and Tiffin, there are many other good alternatives to Lee now at much more sensible prices. Even Cokin (yes I did say Cokin) have the Nuance range, made out of glass with zero cast, I have a 5 stop and 10 stop, Formatt Hitech have the Firestone range where the filtering material is in the glass rather than coating it as with Lee, again with zero cast. Their polariser is the best I’ve ever used and their 15 stop ND filter is also brilliant. Then I believe Benro are putting out equal quality, and I’ve heard of a company called Kood which I think is fairly local to me in NW England. I think more and more people are realising it’s worth looking around, reading reviews and looking at the choices we have. To me competition in any business is only good for the consumer. Excellent video, really enjoyed it and found it very interesting.
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Thanks, Mark! some of those companies I've never heard of, I'll have to check them out. You're right, it's great to see some new and innovative competition coming on to the scene. For the longest time, it would seem that anything that was at all photo related was twice the price as say something comparable but not marketed towards the photo crowd.

I have three Breakthrough x4 CPL polarizers, (2) 77MM and a 100MM for my filter holder. I find them excellent. True blue skies and great cloud definition. I just ordered the new x4 dark CPL which is a combination x4 polarizer and 3 stop neutral density filter. This could be the perfect waterfall filter. I won't have to assemble my filter holder and wonder if water spray is getting between the filters. I can just screw this one filter on the lens and get a range of slower shutter speeds based on my aperture. I can also cover the lens before shooting to keep it dry and whip away any mist as it appears. Breakthrough's customer service is also excellent. IMO Breakthrough's products set a new standard.

Hi Gary, thanks so much for the lowdown on Breakthrough Filters. Sounds like you're a true convert. I just returned from a long stint in the mountains and I am also impressed with these filters. The new polariser sounds like a gem, I'll have to check it out. Thanks again for your feedback.

I must admit I’d love to try the 4x CPL Breakthrough Photography Filter, having seen your results. I live in the U.K. and they don’t seem to be available yet. I use 67mm round filters, and have been very happy with the Zomei Schott glass range of filters, but they don’t seem to have quiet mastered a high quality graduated ND. For now NISI filters are filling the gap, but I’m really looking for to trying a 4x CPL from Breakthrough. I was very impressed with the three waterfalls video, thank you very much, and keep them coming. Rob
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Thanks, Robert! they are impressive filters. I'm not generally a huge filter user but the polariser is excellent and the new dark polariser I have been using quite often as well. The dark polariser is a regular circular polariser with a built-in ND filter, works like a charm.

I use a combination, ND grads are Lee and Formatt Hitech Firecrest, and NDs (6 & 10 stop) are Formatt Hitech Firecrest. The Firecrests are glass and have little to no color cast, maybe slightly warm cast if any. Never heard of Breakthrough, but they looked very good on your tests. I use Lee 105mm polarizer.

I mainly use Lee filters and I find them great to work with. I have recently purchased Lee's 105 mm Landscape Poloriser and I am currently testing it out. So far so good. ..Looking at your shots, I think that I would still prefer the Lee filters over the Breakthrough. Having said that, price is always something that we have to keep in mind and, the Lee filters are expensive $$$

Hi Adam, great location. I've been using a Breakthrough CPL and UV filter for some time and find them excellent. However, very difficult to remove if you put them on too tight. You should also check out the new filter system from Wine Country Camera. I've used Lee and NiSi holder systems for years but now exclusively use the WCC system. Expensive, but with all things photography, you get what you pay for. First truly light leak proof system that I've used for long exposures and no more forcing filters into flimsy holders. Don't think however that they make a holder for the Nikon 12-24.
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 7 лет назад
Thanks, Steve! I would imagine that pretty much all screw on filters get stuck at some point from overtightening. I know that I've had that problem many a time. Either over tightening or frozen on. Never heard of WCC, I'll have to check them out, thanks for the info.

I use Lee ... they are a pain though and take up a lot of space. I usually go lighter with my DX camera when on my bike... I use Tiffen and Hoya filters then a little more reasonable easier to store and not as much of a pain to work with....

Thanks for this video and the comparisons. Image #4 would be my favorite due to the detailed overflow on the little cascade in the foreground. I am not a fan of screw-on filters even without any gloves ☺ I would always prefer square filters that can be put on and off more quickly. I am usually trying a lot of compositions and fiddling around with a screw-on ND for composing and focusing all the time would be frustrating. At the beginning I had to spare the circular polarizer when using a ND because my system did not allow the combination. And I did not want to invest in a more expensive pol with bigger diameter to be attached in front of the filter holder. Not ideal at all, especially when you think of shooting streams or waterfalls where the pol is essentital to get rid of glare. Last year I found the Nisi V5 filter holder kit where the circular pol is included in the adapter ring and placed directly between lens and ND filter. The kit is affordable compared to other renowned brands while having a compact setup with no vignetting problems even at 10mm on APS-C. I am using the kit with a 100mm 10-stop ND by Haida which is also a lot cheaper than others (should be less than 100usd). It seems that color cast only occurs with really long exposure times >60 seconds. I do not know the physics behind this but it is usually corrected easily with the WB settings. Both the Nisi filter kit and the Haida ND are meeting my personal needs so far. Might be worth checking out if some of you guys are looking for an affordable setup, too. Still, 49usd for the filter holder and free worldwide shipping at Breakthrough Photography is interesting. Never heard of it and I will definitely check out their website again. Would be great to see episodes with some technical or gear-related topics and comparisons from now and then on this channel even it might not be what you want to focus on. As an amateur it is great to learn from your experiences. Thanks again!
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Thank you for you posting your experience with the Nisi system. I've never used it so I can't really compare my experience with that holder compared to the Lee or breakthrough system. So far both the Breakthrough holder and Lee are very good, the big difference is price, although Breakthrough doesn't yet have their 150mm filters in stock. Thanks for the technical episode suggestion. To be honest I have shied away from a little from the technical side as there just seems to be so many on RU-vid and not so many about the artistic which for me is the most interesting. This doesn't mean that I'll not cover perhaps a bit of technical info but probably not as much as some channels. Thanks again.

Great video, stay safe around those fires! I've never heard of Breakthrough. I've been using Formatt-Hitech until recently when I managed to get a nasty scratch over my 10 stop. I've since started the process of switching to Lee and have been able to find them for less. Love them so far. My biggest complaint with Formatt-Hitech is that the gasket doesn't come pre-applied, and in some cases the gasket simply wasn't in the box. Leaving me to improvise which is what lead to the mangled scratch in the first place...
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 7 лет назад
Thanks, Jerrad! Most of the fires are north and central BC, devastating for the folks in those areas, to say the least. Are the Hitech filters glass or resin? I forgot about the gasket, I'll have to ask the folks at Breakthrough if the 105mm and 150mm filters come with a gasket.
@jerradpulham2702
@jerradpulham2702 7 лет назад
I have the glass filters. Yea the gaskets are a bit of a pain. Unlike lee where it covers each side, Hitech gives you 2 strips which torque and peel when sliding the filter into the holder. Decent filters just a bloody pain to use effectively.

@dasp125 6 лет назад
Great video as always. I have been using Lee filters for the past 6 years. I need to buy a new set as mine are getting old and scratched. I have noticed that I have never seen you use a graduated ND filter even for sunrise, how do you find the noise levels after recovery in post processing?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Thanks, dasp! you're right i don't often use grad filters as I personally find that the latest digital cameras have so much dynamic range that I can often get everything I need from one shot. I find the noise to be minimal. Occasionally I will take two exposures and combine them in Photoshop. However, for a quick fix without fussing with Photoshop grads are well worth sticking with. I have a couple of Breakthrough Photography grads that I need to try out, just haven't had a chance yet.

I just found your channel Adam, and I am enjoying it a great deal I live in Coquitlam so I'm a little embarrassed I haven't spent more time in some of these lovely local spots. To answer your question I use Formatt-Hitech Firecrest IRND 100mm (6, 10, 13 and 16 stop) square ND filters and I also have the Fotodiox mount and circular filters for my 14-24. I find the Fotodiox ones exceedingly difficult to get on and off and I am constantly worried I'll drop them. I am very interested in Breakthrough as an alternative. The samples you show here have virtually no cast at all which is wonderful. Thanks for giving us such great content. Keep it up. Cheers

Thanks, Tom! Yeah, I had a Fotodiox setup for the 14-24mm and wasn't happy with it. I ended up going for the Lee system. It's okay but very expensive. Eventually, when Breakthrough comes out with their 150mm filters I most likely give them a go.

@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
I don't believe that there is a correct order although you might want to put the polariser on first so that you can see what effect it has and then the ND filter as once that is on you cant see anything. The only issue is that you might get some vignetting with both. Have you looked at their polarise ND combo filter? works a charm.

I use Lee and you are right about the blue cast. These seem to have a bit of a green cast in a few images but I'm not sure. Was it easy to tweek?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 7 лет назад
You're right! The Lee Big Stopper has more of a green cast than a blue one although very easy to remove. I understand that Lee's new pro glass is very neutral but comes at a much higher price. To be honest, the Breakthrough filters have absolutely no cast whatsoever that I noticed, they are very good filters. Video and perhaps my examples are not really the best way to show results. What I am excited about the most is the 150mm size being tempered.

Adam Gibbs Agreed. I have the Tamron 15-30mm lens and of course it requires a special holder for the 150 system. Everything else For my Nikon and my Sony is the 100 system so I have two sets of hard and soft grads plus little, big and super stoppers. Quite an investment but I use them all the time. You are the first person I trust to review this other line but I have followed their growth. If I can use their glass in my filter holder I will try them. Otherwise I will continue to adjust the white balance. I always take a non filter reference shot for later use in LR and PS.

Nice job! Do they make filters that will fit in a Lee filter holder?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 7 лет назад
Hi, Phil! the short answer is yes. I believe that the first 150mm and 105mm sizes are just starting to come in and will fit the Lee holders. If you are interested in the filters your best bet is to contact Breakthrough directly (link below) Thanks!

Are there ever any times when you wish you had a regular solid nd filter instead of the dark cpl? Can the polarization in a dark cpl create unwanted effects at times?

Great video as ever Adam. I use the Lee 100 mm system,polariser / 6 & 10 stops & 1 grad. Love everything about Lee, filter holder etc. I think the Lee pictures in your video probably look best to me. Appreciate your videos. A7111.

That's a pretty skookum set up Mike, must be pretty light? most definitely filters can be darn right expensive. Hard choice because if you have some nice glass you really don't want to put cheap filters in front but quality usually comes at a price.

Yeah it's great for hiking, camping and travelling. And you're 100% right, cheap filters can ruin a photograph.

I use Zomei ND filter 10 stop, found there no color cast from it. And i Globe CPL. I'm still looking for some decent Grads filters. And trying to find a filter holder that a CPL holder in front and a CPL Filter to match the holder.

Never heard of Zomei, I'll have to check them out. Breakthrough makes some very nice grads and holder, not sure about the CPL though as the company is slowly bringing out new products.

I think it's a good middle range filter system for amateurs ... My 2 cents :) And thank you for your very informative videos, i'm a fan from Thailand :)

Hi, thanks for making this video. Very helpful! ...I heard about Breakthrough Photography filters recently and seeing all the reviews I'm very interested in migrating over...I've tried B+W, but have found they're a bit brownish with my camera, so I've stuck with a Hoya 9-stop mostly....I have a couple questions about the Breakthrough screw-on filters, however: are you able to stack the ND and CPL on top of each other with no vignetting at wide angles (ie, 16mm focal length)? Also, do you think a Breakthrough screw-on ND could be used with an adapter ring on top and then a filter holder with no vignetting? So that way you can use a square ND grad in conjunction with the screw-on? Thanks again for the video!
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Hi Adrian, thanks so much for the feedback. Generally speaking at 16mm you're limited to one screw on filter. I have stacked the two filters that I have and they work great on longer focal lengths down to 20mm. Breakthrough have come up with a solution that might be worth checking out. The company just came out with a polariser ND combined into one filter called a dark CPL. Comes in a 3 stop and 6 stop. I don't own one myself but am excited to try one out and perhaps can give a review of them down the road. As far as the screw on along with the adapter I'm not sure if it will work at 16mm, I haven't tried it. If you do stack filters on a regular basis you would probably be better served by purchasing either the 100mm filter holder or a 150mm that will allow you to stack up to 4 filters with no vignetting at 16mm.The 100mm would work with most lenses except the very wide ones such as the Nikon 14-24mm or the Canon 11-24mm. Hope this helps?

Have you tried the x4 cpl dark 3 stop nd or the x4cpl dark6 stop nd combo screw on filters? One fellow from another channel said he could meter with the x4 cpl dark 3 stop nd. I am leaning toward the combo with 6 stop nd.
@QuietLightPhoto

Hi Drake, I use the X4 dark CPL 3 stop filter quite a bit, love it. You can meter with the 3 stop. not sure about the 6 stop as I don't own one. Best bet is to get in touch with Breakthrough and see if you can meter with it. Cheers!

Adam, great video! I am looking at a new filter system at this present time. If you would not mind could you commenti on the following. Any updates on this filter system? Are you still using them? Pro and Cons after having them in the field?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 5 лет назад
Really like the breakthrough line of filters.The new magnetic system is really great although they are updating the design so they'll probably be out within the next few weeks. The screw ons I like very much since they are lightweight if weight is a concern, they do get stuck though just as with most screw on filters. The Dark CPL filters are excellent as they mitigate the need to stack ND filters with polarizers.

Glen Domulevicz I've been using the polarizer the last few weeks and it is a fine piece of glass. I am impressed that the colours of both the polarizer and ND filters seem to be spot on, no colour casts.
