He found my secret photo location! Don't you hate it when other photographers find your secret spot? In this vlog, I head out to Ammonite falls near the city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. I give some tips on composition and show examples of my work, both successful and unsuccessful.
Breakthrough Photography has been very kind in supporting my photography and lucky for me Breakthrough make some of the best filters currently on the market. For more info be sure to check out Breakthrough at adamgibbsfilters.com/

Great video I had to play that obnoxious photographer (?)falling down the hill several times! 😂🤣😂he probably slipped on some of the smugness that oozed out of him. kidding aside I hope he was ok,I can say from personal experience that a fall like that can break a person up pretty bad.

Very entertaining this week and really enjoy your refreshing "real" commentary , so nice to see we're all human . So many "professionals" come across as snobbish and unapproachable , you come across as a "regular" guy and hope to one day participate in a workshop . Love the live view composition reviews as well . Saw the f18 fern to fall shot , no focus stacking ? Did you do any layer or luminosity masking in post or just sliders and dodge/burn , etc ? Thanks so much for sharing and look forward to years to come 👍👍
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 5 лет назад
I did take a number of images both stopped down and focus stacked but ended up using this one as it is acceptably sharp. Funny that the focus stacked images are sharper but I actually prefer the less sharp images, go figure. No luminosity masks for this, just some dodging, burning and a reasonably heavy vignette around the outside. Thanks!

Interesting video, I really like the new composition with the ferns - much more atmosphere like we’re ‘peeking’ into the scene. I wonder what focussing technique you would normally use to get such a prominent foreground feature sharp as well as the falls?

Great video Adam. Enjoyed all the "fails." I think the critique model is good. I like the more recent photo. I think the waterfall looks better when its smaller in the background. It has a way of bringing the eye into the image more so than the image with the larger waterfall. Also it might just be me but I love the darker, moodier light of the more recent image. I think it makes the intimate forest scene look much more private and interesting

I commented before that I really appreciate the self critiques. I learn a great deal from them and I don't really see others doing that on a regular basis. On the image with the ferns, I liked it a lot. I can't decide between the one with the long lens versus the new one. I really like those ferns. I think what I personally would like, would be the long lens but shot this time of year in the same spot and processed the same. As I said, I love those ferns and I think it would be even stronger if the falls appeared a little larger. Having said that, that was a wonderful shot. I really like the darker edges like the recent photo. Great video.

Hey Adam Great video and as usual a great location. It's interesting watching your methods and listening to your thoughts regarding what has and what hasn't worked and why. Loved your comedy bit including Gavin, your reaction was really funny and he's a funny guy anyway. His videos are brilliant - great photography with brilliant humour. These are good times for photographers. Now we have guys like you and Gavin on youtube (and the many others) to showcase your photography with individualism and humour. Such a brilliant way to learn or just enjoy when we're not out shooting ourselves. Before you RU-vidrs it was camera clubs - Seemed to be a group of introverted older men led by others who were perpetually obsessing over the rules - nothing else in the universe mattered. 👍

Haha, too funny about the camera clubs. I do think camera clubs are a great avenue for like-minded people to meet up and talk about their passion but yes some members do tend to get a bit obsessive with the "rules" Yeah, I think Gavin and I have similar ideas about photography so you may see more spoofs on what is wrong with photography. I really also enjoyed the processing piece as it helps me to see all your thought processes from the beginning of the capture and right to the end with the processing. Great video Adam, enjoyed the bit of Tom foolery as well. In the first photo you showed, I was struck by the fact that, though the waterfall was the main subject, you dealt with it in such a way it wasn't really dominant in a way. Yet, in doing so, it created more interest in the fall for me. In the side by side comparison, with the older photo I felt as though I could be content standing right where the camera was and with the new photo, I wanted to go deeper, to explore. I wanted to get further into that scene and get closer to the waterfall. It was a magnifecent tension in the best possibe way. Great job. Thankm you again for all the content you provide. Hi Adam, many thanks for sharing. A suggestion: any chance you could do some videos about your fav 4x5 images discussing composition and technical aspects? This might mean more time at home rather than videos out in the field. No worries if not possible.

Thanks for the suggestion, did you see this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nSbK40hwxzE.html all of the images are some of my favourite 4 x 5s

What? Going to shoot waterfalls and not bringing a lens cloth? I need a full set of guest towels when I go haha! Love the video mate and those drone shots are really appreciated... I know the pain and concentration needed! Great personal critique. Nice and refreshing.

Great video Adam. I really enjoyed the self-critique content and found this to be really helpful. One enhancement you might also like to include in future discussions is where you choose to focus. The first shot with the ferns in the foreground and the waterfall in the distance would have been a challenge to achieve front to back focus and I am interested in where you chose as your focus point.

Thanks, Keith! I focused about 1/3 in closer to the ferns, thanks for the suggestion.

Have to reiterate and say that your videos are very instructional and inspiring. They seem to always give me that shot of encouragement that I can continue to grow my skills even though I’m just an amateur and shoot as a sincere hobbyist. If you have a quick minute I would love to hear your reasoning for your decision to switch from Canon to Nikon. I get gear is gear and brands are all pretty much identical other than a few preferential items...but just simply curious. Thanks again for sharing your passion through your “down to earth” personality. Perhaps one of these days I can slip away from my wife and kids to enjoy and learn at one of your workshops.

No real reason other than I have always used Nikon except when digital was at its infancy Canon had the upper hand for some time with the D series of cameras, still excellent. I just prefer the feel of Nikon, quality wise I don't think you can go wrong with any of the brands these days. Thanks, Gayle!

Greetings Adam from the most petty and ill informed Amateur photographer in the north east of Scotland. Coincidentally I came across Gavins channel just this week I really enjoyed his content very much, loads of fun and some great photography too. when you said you still had two places for Tonquin to fill I am sorely tempted to get my name in there. But after a year of uncertainty and hic-ups that are going to take some time to iron out, I will just hold out and hope that you do it again in 20, now that the seed is sowed with me , one way or another I want to make a trip Canada. Anyway, great images and interesting the different perspectives of the same-- ish shot. All the best .

Thanks! Yes all going well I should have a trip into Tonquin next year, love it in there, Unfortunately, though the price at the lodge will be going up in 2020, nothing goes down, does it?

Hilarious video Adam. Thanks for the laughs and some excellent photography thrown in. I was wondering where your focus was set for the image you got. Hyper focal distance or did you focus on the fern? Just curious as I’m always second guessing myself and end up taking many photos with different focus points. Thanks Adam!
@QuietLightPhoto

Thanks, David! I believe I focused on the fern about halfway in, seemed to work pretty good.

Adam, I liked seeing examples of what works and what doesn't . In your first photo, with the ferns, everything in the foreground looks pin sharp. I believe it was a half second exposure, was it so calm that the leaves weren't moving or did you have to blend multiple exposures?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 5 лет назад
The ferns are acceptably sharp, I generally just wait for a lull in the wind. If that doesn't work then blend images if need be. Thanks, David!

Hey Adam, love the way you make stories for your photographs! Do you require permits or license for flying drones in the forest? You inspire me! Thanks =)

Ah, wish you had done a little bit of banter with the mad Yorkshireman on camera, that would have been interesting :) Strangely enough I probably preferred your previous shot of the fall although the moody present shot worked too. Have a good week. rgds

I like the moss covered rocks on the right. Wondering if there is a composition taken far right and low to capture those rocks in the fore or mid ground.

There is lots of great stuff on the side of the river but the views of the falls are often blocked, hard place to photograph. Thanks, Leslie!
