Landscape Photography - It's not about the gear. In this series of videos I aim to prove that you can use entry level Photographic equipment to take stunning pictures.
All photographs shown were shot using...
Nikon D5000 (entry level DSLR)
I bought this second hand on Ebay
Tripod by Jessops (Entry level but very sturdy)
again, I bought this second hand on Ebay
Combined they cost me £150
AND THAT'S ALL I USED!
More about me: www.shootsmart.co.uk
See the pictures: tinyurl.com/htzxenz
Credits:
Music: Rock Angel - Joakim Karud
Tiler in the T5: Lee Call
Drone Filming: Lee Call Photography & Film
A huge thanks to Lee Call my great mate for a great day out and for lending a helping hand with your drone - He might be an arse but his drone footage is ace - I'm guessing I'll just have to put up with him just for that!

Was binge-watching Heaton, and came across this video. I subscribed, based on a. your photographs, and b. your easy-going presentation. As a Salfordian who has lived in Missouri, for the last four years, it was a pleasure to watch someone who reminded me of my mates back in Salford. The music was pretty good, too. Great work, Gary.

Thanks for a great video Gary - I am subscribing partly because I like your manner and presentation style, and I like the fact you are not hyping expensive gear which some of us cannot afford, or, in my case, can't afford and do not see the need for. My "entry level" D3400 and an "old" D300 take great photos when I expose correctly, compose correctly and slow down enough to think about what I am doing. (Of course that's not the way every shot turns out!!) Great job, looking forward to seeing more (referred here by a happy viewer, by the way!) Cheers!

Hi Gary - Love your videos, and really enjoyed this one (and part 2), as I have a Nikon D5000 myself (which I sometimes feel a little embarrassed about due to its age etc), but having seen the images you have captured using it, I will be taking it out my camera bag with pride once again to practise, practise, practise, and will be worrying less about the age of the equipment! Thanks for the inspiration! :)

A very enjoyable video. I agree about the over-emphasis on gear, but that's commerce, I suppose. I do a lot of hill climbing to get my pics and just take a couple of super-compacts, a Canon and a Fuji; mainly for weight reasons. Everything has its limitations of course, but maybe that forces us to think more creatively sometimes. Well done...and I enjoyed the music as well ! Subscribed.

Good video Gary, and so.e sound advice for beginners. I total agree that a cheap camera is all you need to get started. The most difficult practical part IMO is eye for composition. Settings you can search for on RU-vid, composition is solely in the person eye and interpretation of the scene. Secondly software , once I got Lightroom and Photoshop I did not have a clue what I was doing or what slider did what and how to make am under exposed image good ! This to me is the biggest learning curve as you do need a decent computer , reasonable amount of storage ( Raw files), and money for LR and PS. After 18 months of using LR I think I am more than ok and can edit any poorly taken photo. However that was apt of watching RU-vid tutorials !

Bought a camera and 6 lenses, plus filters (some old fashioned daft ones like the star thing) remote (shutter cable), an adapter the camera needed, camera bag and a few other bits and bats for £90. It's my go to camera now making my 5DIII redundant, and it's much more fun to use, an Olympus OM10. Totally agree with your sentiments, I do have some higher end kit 5DII 5DIII and a 7DII and at least 6 L lenses and 3 good quality third party, but I get as much fun out of my 35mm cameras and much much more fun with my Bronica ETRSi (£250 with lens and 2 backs) The only thing I wouldn't cut cost on is the tripod. Great video.

Gary Gough. Hi Gary, your videos old or new, are so organic and earthy and really engage the viewer, me included. Today in fact, I was supposed to work on a video edit but got immersed in your Lake District shoot. Another wonderful area of the Uk, that has fond memories for me. Btw, have you been up to shoot at the west coast of Scotland? I spent many occasions up to my knees in deep snow and freezing water with my Rolleiflex Twin Lens Reflex shooting some of the most dramatic landscapes I have ever seen. I recommend areas such as around Helensburgh, Garelochhead and basically the whole west coast is magnificent. I am currently rebuilding my website and will have it back up running in mid Oct, so will send you a link to it when it's ready. I also teach photography and video production in Bangkok. Most recently at Stamford University. If you get chance to come to Thailand, I would love to meet you and perhaps get out to do some shooting together or even if you arrange a field trip for some photographers to visit Thailand would be great.

On your 18-55 does the front element seem to wobble about rather excessively? I got a hand me down D5000 with both kit lenses but the 55-200 has (or had, not sure where it is) a bad focus motor, the 18-55 works but has that wobble and the exposure is roughly one stop under.

A very justified photography video. Far too many people have equipment that is much too good for their skills! But may I ask what tripod you bought off Ebay for £20? Did you go for one that you knew would be OK, or just take a chance on anything at that price? I'm still using my two compact cameras, and a short tripod, but could do with a taller tripod for some shots.

Hi, so much to cover... In my later Vlogs I'm adding the exif data, and I'll do a follow up video covering my Photoshop workflow too so you'll be able to see exactly how I post process my pictures. Hope this helps.

Definitely superb! BTW a quick tip from me to you may be you can also roll a video from your dslr to show how you have framed and your opinion about how to capture the shot so that it makes us clearer to understand what you are thinking of...

Excellent video as always Gary with the customary enthusiasm and helpful tips. Nice that it's targeted at those who don't have money falling out of their pockets.Sorry to end with a winge but it's just a bit of a shame the music is somewhat jarring.

Enjoyed the videos and the terrific information but I do have one critique on the final edit. The music is just dreadful. I was able to listen to you over the wind but had to mute the video while the music played. I am not trying to be a jerk but wanted to give you my honest opinion. If the music is a must, maybe just a little softer in the background. Thank You

It's not just the music, but more the shocking volume of it after listening to your (soft) voice....

Totally agree re the music, which took away from an excellent video. We all have different tastes but generally you want something that stays in the background and compliments the subject. I subscribed for your pearls of wisdom though :-)

Hi Gary, not complaining about the type of music but could you try to balance the volume with the rest of the video please. Just found your site, like it loads...............but don't like constantly having to turn down when the B Roll music kicks in.

I've been following another photographer on RU-vid and he said prity much the same as yourselves " it's not your gear " I have a Sony a230 and that didn't have live view which made things a bit of a pain so I bought myself a Christmas presents of a Sony a58k a camera I have had before and for the price is a dam good camera and beats canon a700 in specs as well as price

As just a matter of interest, why didn't your ND filters not work on that lens?
@GaryGough

The lens I used for this camera was much smaller than my normal ones so my filter holder didn't work.

Great vid really enjoyed it. I disagree with the comments about the music, I thought the balance was just right. Just one comment though, as a Whitby lad, Saltwick is pronounced Saltick lol and the shipwreck there is the Admiral Von Trump (for anybody wishing to google it). I'm just pulling yer chain there though! Great job, Subscribed.

Most aweful music and too laud vs voice over. Currently I'm using a canon t3i with a decent lense (sigma 17-70, f2.8-4) and understand the general idea of landscape photography. My question is if I am able to capture a good image what size of photo is possible? Apature priority, ISO 100, f8-9.
@GaryGough
@GaryGough 7 лет назад
Wayne Crofford - your camera produces 18mp files which is excellent. These files can produce clean prints 30"x20" easily. Point taken re the volumes, my newer films address this. Thanks for taking time out to comment, always welcome. Gary

Sorry Gary that''s rubbish. Everyone one knows you need at least, a Pentax K1, k5, Leica M3, Fed 3 and 4, Fuji G617, Fuji XT3, Mamiya RZ67, Mamiya 1000s, GW690, Nikon F4,a couple of 35 mils, 3 35mm point and shoots. 8 baskets of lens, 6 donkeys, and one tripod (to help keep the weight down): And a month to get there:

It's not about the gear, but it's about time to get a proper microphone. Get one and balance the sound in your video. The bad sound is just killing the entire video.
@olzzn

or just tape a piece of a cotton swab over the microphone of the camera.
