In this video I enjoy some winter landscape photography in the snow. Haweswater reservoir is located in the Lake District National Park.

Thanks for the inspirational videos. My 6 year old son loves to watch your videos, especially before he goes to sleep. He doesn't quite get the technicalities of what you say, but every time you show the taken shot, he calls me and says... look, that's pretty awesome!

You are absolutely spot on. You are living my dream! To combine being up there with nature at its finest and capturing its beauty at the same is about as good as it gets. You have really inspired me to get my ass out of gear and go and do the same. I did my summer ML many years ago and have done very little since, I shall be dusting off the wild camping gear and getting up to the Welsh mountains once again, as you said , it doesn't matter if you get the shot or not, you can't lose!,, looking forward to following your travels, thanks for taking the time to make these.

Gotta say (I suppose this might be controversial on a British/European channel, and I mean no offense) that this reminds me of hunting for big game a lot. Do lots of scouting and planning, meet your hunting buddies at some awful hour, have to make improvisations, trying to get the best angle, deciding when a location will no longer meet your needs in the current conditions, etc. Very cool, because I've done photography and hunting my whole life and never connected them in that way. Great video!

This video very nicely presents another facet of landscape photography - necessary adjustments to the situation. Planning is important but sometimes it all goes in vain just because of unexpected events. Then it is up to photographer's skills to use the maximum of the place and moment to create something unique. And you did (and do) this very well.

Great work Thomas; fantastic surroundings, some terrific-looking shots and I'm sure you had a blast, despite the change of plans and the cold. I always enjoy shoots like that; just you and the equipment and the scenery and your own creativity. I wish we had some of that scenery down in West Sussex though. I mean, it's nice but I need to jump in the car and head north I think, for - literally - a change of scenery...

Interesting video. Just one point though. You say you must focus before dropping in the ND filter. You don't need to do this with a Zeiss 21mm. You can use the barrel markings and set the hyperfocal distance. With your tripod up as high as it is, the 21mm zeiss can be set at infinity for a wide view as in your video. ;)
@ThomasHeatonPhoto
@ThomasHeatonPhoto 8 лет назад
+Stuart Low Yeah, the Zeiss is very accurate when using the barrel, it was just general advise. The Canons & Sigmas aren't as accurate.

If you have a manual lens you can put the F stop wide open and still focus with a 10 stop ND if you forgot to focus.

Close to where you shot is The Old Corpse track accessible from the road. Walk up that track & you will find 3 Shepherds field shelters in various states of collapse that can provide good foreground interest & similar composition. The pumping station you looked at rarely if ever provides a good shot particularly towards The Rigg. Nice to see some video of you shooting on my home patch. I lived in Askham for 13 years & regularly shot all over the area. Beautiful place, pity they drowned much of it! All the best.

Not many people know this, but there a viewfinder cover integrated that comes with the 5D MARK III. It's on the camera strap. You remove the eye piece (pinch it on the sides and slide it up). Then you can put the viewfinder cover on. You're welcome ;)
