Marty DeHart gives us a detailed tour of a landscape she designed. The client wanted to experience a sense of seclusion from the close neighbors, wasn't big on flowers, and needed a dog-friendly space. This design contains quite a stellar plant palette in which to draw inspiration. To WATCH full episodes, visit www.volunteergardener.org

I am so impressed with this designer ( I’m also a designer). Her plant knowledge is fantastic and her passion for plants is apparent! So often on RU-vid self proclaimed landscape designers focus on making money. Hope I am able to find more of her work on RU-vid.

ever since I first saw this a couple months ago I have now done away with wanting a pool at least one covering most of the back yard, I have begun planting and have added 10 trees I had to move some after planting and have spent more time than I want to admit looking at the direction of the limbs and taking that into account.. it’s taken over my brain power but I’m learning a lot and I was watching this one lady commenting about her garden and how it truly is a place where you work out a lot of your thinking 🤔

I'll try, but this is from memory, so might not be totally accurate. I drew a design with a plant list, but due to availabilities and other factors at installation time (like me seeing something really cool when scouting for plants), the original list is not very useful as a reference. I'm using botanical names here for accuracy if you want to look something up, with common name in parens where needed. Big background evergreens: Thuja x plicata 'Green Giant' (Green Giant Arborvitae); Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald' (Emerald Arborvitae); Cryptomeria japonica 'Radicans' (usually called Cryptomeria, may be another common name tho); Magnolia grandiflora 'Alta'; Magnolia grandiflora 'Kay Parris'; Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Ogon' (Ogon Dawn Redwood); Ilex x 'Nellie R Stevens' (Nellie R Stevens Holly); Ilex x 'Emily Bruner' (Emily Bruner Holly); Pinus virginiana 'Wate's Golden' (Wate's Golden Virginia Pine) - this is the hindu-pan pruned pine Japanese Maples: 'Sango Kaku' (Coralbark); 'Bihou'; Red Dragon'; 'Shaina' Shrubs/lower conifers: Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Fernspray Gold' - in the big pot, C. o. 'Gracilis , C. o. 'Nana Lutea' - the little ball shaped guy; C. o. 'Split Rock' (all these are commonly called Hinoki Cypress); Cedrus deodara 'Feelin' Blue' (Dwarf Deodar Cedar); Junipers J. conferta 'Golden Pacific', J. chinensis 'Daub's Frosted'; Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns' (Weeping Serbian Spruce - for some reason I didn't mention this in the video, you can see it to the left of the water feature); Pinus banksiana 'Schoodic' ('Schoodic' Jack Pine); Pinus strobus 'Hillside Winter Gold' (White Pine in the pot); Pinus strobus 'Green Twist' (dwarf White Pine -on the berm); Picea pungens 'Montgomery blue' (Dwarf Blue Spruce - on the berm); Illicium x 'Woodlander's Ruby' (sometimes called Anise Bush - leaves smell like licorice when bruised); Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret' (Bald Cypress); The grass was Miscanthus sinensis 'Rigoletto' (common name for Miscanthus is Maiden Grass) That's most everything. There were a few Aucuba in there I didn't point out, and some seasonal stuff like the Dichondra 'Silver Falls' spilling out of a pot. One thing I noticed I also didn't mention in the video was the vine covering the fence. It's Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Beauty', commonly called Cross Vine. Native, evergreen, blooms like crazy in spring, clings without a trellis. A great plant. Hope that helps! Marty

Most all of the plants in this yard are Zone 6 hardy and many are Zone 5. The only Z7 one I can think of is the gardenia, and in Nashville you have to pick the right variety of gardenia to hope it will live. Most gardenias are Z8.

You're in luck, somehow YT flagged me with a comment about this, which doesn't usually happen. This is zone 7a, in Nashville, TN. Unfortunately this yard was about 90% destroyed by an F3 tornado that directly hit it about 3 years ago. My client was lucky to survive, it ripped the second floor right off her house. Heartbreaking, really. We rescued what plants looked like they could recover (which wasn't many), put them in humongous containers and babied them for a year. They now live at her new place some miles away.

@martydehart3849
@martydehart3849 2 года назад
Emeralds were 5 feet apart on center, and were 12 ft tall at installation. Green Giants were 9 feet apart on center (this is crowded for them, but needed for the desired dense screening), and were 10 ft tall at installation.

Is there a wooden fence that the evergreens are in front of? This is beautiful!
@martydehart3849
@martydehart3849 2 года назад
There is a fence. It was approved by the homeowner and then installed in her absence, and when she got back she found they'd deviated from the plan and she hated how it turned out. So I was also masking that. You cant see it from the inside of the backyard, but the fence has a dense covering of Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Beauty', a wonderful native evergreen perennial vine that covers the fence on the street side and blooms like crazy in the spring.

Sorry I didn't see your question sooner! The 'Green Giant' arborvitae and the Cryptomerias were about 10 feet tall. The magnolias and 'Nellie Stevens" hollies were about 10 feet. The 'Emerald' arborvitae were 12 feet. All that material was balled & burlapped; everything else was smaller and in containers, the largest being the 'Wate's Golden' Virginia Pine which was in a roughly 50 gallon container. Most of the container stock was 10 gallons and under.

Yes, pretty much trashed in the F5 tornado that hit Nashville in March of 2019. The whole second floor of the house was torn off, and a neighbors roof smashed into the backyard. It was heartbreaking.
