I saw the old film reels of the one they nicknamed "the cigar car." Maybe it was the same one, the film was black and white and it wobbled side to side as it drove around like this one. As I remember the story, Tremulis and others (investors?) tried to squeeze Summers out of the car company. That group couldn't get the car to stabilize. Later, Summers came back into the picture and did finally stabilize the vehicle. But it was too late and all funding was withdrawn, the company went bankrupt. Too bad the US Forest Service destroyed all of the nice gyro-stabilized, motorized, 3 wheel, trail donkeys Summers designed for them. They were SUPER stable! The 1,500 (hazy on that number) pound payload sat on top of the two-foot-wide, nine-foot-long, about four-foot-high, vehicle and the operator stood on a platform in the back with two handle yokes to steer the single front wheel. In the demo reel, one man ran down the hill and tried to push it over. But the vehicle just barely budged and went back to its normal position! Soon after they started service, Congress passed a law that made it illegal to operate motorized vehicles on park trails. You would think the USFS would get a pass. Those things were so sweet! Summers was a real genius. I wonder if Floyd is still around and still has those old super 8 movies?

You may wish to compare this to the Brennan Monorail ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyro_monorail ) which is the same thing, only running on a rail. I believe the Brennan system used a simpler, passive system, which was more massive but used fewer moving parts.

Great work to rebuild the machine from almost nothing. It's amazing to see it working although as you say it has some technical challenges to the design. By the time you add the weight and power of the gyro and actuator the gains you save by having only 2 wheels are possibly lost but some people are still trying to do it.

More tech that "they" will never let us have. Power & control of the masses.
