Lang Lang takes the time to tell his thoughts on Mozart’s Sonata facile. He interprets this work on his new album “Piano Book” and describes his approach to the interpretation. With his new album “Piano Book”, Lang Lang goes back to his first love - to the pieces that made him want to become a musician in the first place; a reflection on the music that influenced him most during his early childhood.

16 years old is quite young. Don't let these conservative standards shape your relationship with progress. Luigi Carroccia started to play the piano at 15yo and managed to arrive in the third stage of the 2015 Chopin Competition. He's also competing this year as well and has a wonderful sound. Dive head first in whatever you want to learn and enjoy the whole process, it's the only thing that really matters at the end.

"First" recital piece? Okay, piano players who are feeling demoralized here, don't despair! Obviously Lang Lang is a prodigy and seems a little out of touch with most musicians. But for reference The Royal Conservatory of Music has this piece as a choice from their Level 8 curriculum. They start Prep A, Pre B, 1, 2, 3...Levels 5, 6, 7, 8 are considered "Intermediate." 9 and 10 are "Advanced."

What about the second movement? In particular I am most intrigued to know where to use the pedals and especially the sustaining pedal as in the Henle Text I have there are no markings?
@popocrispies
@popocrispies Год назад
You don’t have to use any pedal for Mozart. Just keep a good legato with your fingers. That being said, if you want to use pedal the old aphorism is you should pedal with your ears. That is, listen for where the pedal adds a nice resonance and listen to where holding the pedal makes it sound too blurry.

I thought that we shouldn't raise the elbows when doing thumbs under, but obvisously Lang Lang does it a lot ... Raising elbows sure helps a lot ... What to think about this ?? Also, his thumbs under technic doesn't sound perfect to my ears, I mean that I can hear a break in the melody when he does them ... I know he is an amazing piano player, am I looking too much for an unecessary perfection ?

This piece is Level 7 or 8 (I forget which) in the Royal College of Music syllabus. No way is this an easy piece in its entirety, and no way is it a typical "first recital piece" for anyone. That's just a crock. Who do you know that plays Level 7 or 8 pieces for their first recital? There are RU-vid videos of children playing this piece (I'm talking 10 years old or younger), but none of them really play it properly. Watch Daniel Barenboim play it and see how it's really supposed to be played. No child on earth can play it that way. This video is just Lang Lang flexing and being passively condescending. And of course he's sitting at a $175K (or more?) Steinway Grand with action that plays like butter. Don't feel bad, people, if you can't duplicate his playing here or if you didn't master this piece at age 5. No one else has either.

‘...and, everybody knows this piece’. Actually, everybody knows only the first four bars. PS: To clear up a widespread misunderstanding. The title ‘Sonata facile’ is *Italian*- it is not French. (The clue is in the noun; the correct French spelling would be ‘Sonate facile’). Whilst the word ‘facile’ (‘easy’) is identical in both languages, the correct pronunciation in each language could not be more different. To pronounce the title correctly in Italian, it should sound: ‘Sonata *fah*-chee-leh’. To pronounce the word incorrectly - and look foolish - with a spurious French pronunciation, carry on saying, ‘Sonata fass-eel’; ie you are saying ‘sonata’ in Italian and ‘facile’ in French!

@@AK47_414 I agree he is a cocky individual. He was probably a very precocious child, but this behaviour may have been encouraged as his father is a famous Chinese musician and Lang is, de rigeur, an only child. You are not the first to notice his lack of emotion. He intended to audition for Beijing's Central Conservatory of Music, but, having difficulties with his lessons, was expelled from his piano tutor's studio for "lack of talent". Another music teacher at his state school noticed Lang's sadness, and put the score of Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 10 in C major, K. 330 on the piano; she asked him to play the second movement, which reminded Lang of his love for the instrument. "Playing the K. 330 brought me hope again," he recalled. (from Wikipedia). I would assume that his considerable following, both from Europe and USA and the most populous country on earth, and his now considerable wealth has perhaps added to his air of superiority! Apparently, some of the greatest classical masters were not considered, amiable, nice or even interesting individuals. God bless you my friend!
