A viewer - Lily, contacted me about the air quality in her apartment, and it concerned her to the point of panic, that she was unable to get the quality down to safe levels. We communicated via email for several days, going back and forth by way of troubleshooting what her problem may be. Nothing that I was telling her was seeming to make a difference, as the readings were still way too high. She offered to send the device out to me, so that I could take it apart to see if it was a fake causing the issues, and also do some extensive testing to see what the problem may be.
Lily had broken the stand on the device, and had to buy a new one, so she offered to send the broken one to me for testing and review, and asked me to please make a video, so she could see the results of that testing. I happily agreed to do this to help her in her venture to find answers to her bad air quality. Thanks to Lily, this video is not going to just help her, but it is also going to help a lot of others than may have this device (langkou Air Quality Monitor), or are thinking of making the purchase. This device is also sold under the name of EG - on Amazon.
I hope you enjoy this video, and that you take something away, that will help in making the right decision for you and your family. Merry Christmas to all, and to all - A Very Happy New Year...
If you like this type of video, please let me know in the comments about a subject you would like to discuss and I will do my best to create a video on that subject, or if you have a video idea for a DIY project, A review of a product or anything else, I will be happy to create that content as well.
Thanks for stopping by, and remember - find someone who needs to laugh, needs to smile, needs to cry, or just simply needs a friend - and make it happen ;).

I really enjoyed your in-depth testing videos! After watching your videos, I was planning to buy a Hotkerm, but the clean-looking one is no longer available. By the way, they are also made in China, so the problem is not whether they're made in China; it's about how much a company or importer is willing to spend on design and quality control to ensure they are made right. These days, many Amazon sellers will buy cheap OEM products and flood the markets. Thank you for weeding out the bad ones. Greed is slowly killing humans, from toxic fragrances and cleaning products to unhealthy artificial foods and supplements! God help us!

You are so right with "God help us!), I really like that... As far as Hotkrem, I can no longer recommend them as their quality control is non-existent wich is very unfortunate. You are right - I also have no problem with made in China - it is just that there are many China companies that are truly cutting corners just to make a buck, and it is significantly destroying their credibility such as the Hotkrem. Greed is what is doing it - so again - you are very right in what you say. I am constantly on the look-out for a great air quality monitor that I can get behind. Unfortunately, all the monitors that I have previously recommended, I can now no longer recommend any of them (except for the CO2 and CO monitors), and that is because not only are people saying that their monitors have stopped working, don't work out of the box, or work for a few days and quite, but all of mine have lost accuracy as well in a short period of time, which leaves me feeling bad that I even recommended them in the first place. I am starting to feel that in order to get a monitor that stands up, it would be one of the more expensive monitors (200.00 or more), and the recommendation would be to stay away from the less expensive ones, and that is unfortunate. I am still trying to find a budget friendly monitor that actually works for more than a few minutes, days or weeks - frustrating to say the least... Thanks again for your comment and questions, I only hope that I have been able to help, and sorry I couldn't be more positive in my response, but like you say - "God help us"... 👍

Thank you Lily for sending this out to me for testing and tear down. I hope that you will feel much better now knowing that the reason for your readings is nothing more than a bad monitor choice. The AirKnight, and the other monitor that you have, according to the photos you sent to me, is also showing bad readings, and that is because the AirKnight has the exact same inferior TVOC/HCHO sensor inside, and from the readings of your other monitor, it appears that it also has this same inferior sensor, and I know that is unfortunate - having 3 monitors that are inaccurate, but at least you know now that it is not your apartment. Get yourself a TemTop M10 or a monitor that incorporates, a true only TVOC sensor, and also a true only HCHO sensor. May everyone have a Merry Christmas, and a joyous and Happy New Year... Leave a comment for something that you would like to see.

We need a convenient summary of all the info. For example,, think about a Project Farm video. He reviews all kinds of stuff. At the end of the video, he shows graphs so that the audience can effectively absorb all the info. Edit: I just thought of a great idea for a bunch of videos: what if you made an air quality monitor DIY kit? You could come up with an open source project, say which components are worth using, how to assemble, which screen to use, etc. A Raspberry Pi could easily handle this, and there are people involved with that hobby that would love to help. I mean, if you straight up sold an air monitor, I would buy it. However, that's a pretty involved process lol (especially the quality control part). Another idea for videos is a gas-specific showdown. "How to all the monitors behave when I inject CO2 into the fishtank? How do they respond to welding gas, or argon, acetylene? I actually think that superglue is hard for them to detect... that kinda thing

Thanks John for more great ideas. However, you are very right when you say - it can be very involved. Right now, I cannot afford to devote all my time to Outside In like I would love to, as my job takes me out of town, and at a moments notice, so as soon as I get involved in a project, I get a call taking me away from the project. If I were to eventually be able to devote all my time 24/7 to Outside In, that would be absolutely incredible, as there would finally by no more disruptions in my work. It is very hard to implement allot of your ideas, simply because I am unable to devote as much time as I would love to creating content. I am constantly overdrawing my account to try and keep creating content, and when it happens that I start getting financial help, and enough so that I can spend every waking moment working on ideas and content, that will be great, and I look very much forward to being able to do just that - give all my attention, and devotion to creating the kind of content you are asking for. I do feel however that 2024 is the year that Outside In is going to take off, and when that happens, I will be in heaven because statistics and numbers are what I love producing. I truly enjoy Project Farm and how he shows statistics (I love spreadsheets, and love even more creating them), but that takes many many hours to create a video, and also days sometimes for sure. It also takes a great deal of money which I do not have unfortunately, but I am hopeful that the day for me to be able to devote the time that Project Farm does to his videos, is going to be a great day indeed. Thanks John for all your ideas and input, as they are greatly appreciated, and I look forward to being able to implement all your ideas into Outside In, because you are right, a break-down of the information in each video as a chart, would be awesome to do, but like I say - it takes many hours of work to pull that sort of thing off, and it makes it very difficult when I am into the 10th or 16th hour of working on a project, and then I am called away for a few days with my job.... The job comes first because that is the only way I have right now to fund these videos, pay the bills, and still try to keep enough back to eat LOL, so until that changes, allot of these ideas will just have to wait to be implemented.

Well done. It's a shame about the hofun, that's the one I bought lol, it seems to work for me but it does need 20mins to warm up as the instructions say so I don't take readings until it's been running a while. I shared your video in my last video so hopefully you got a few more subscribers from it. I wonder if there is anything else these detectors aren't monitoring which will affect air quality such as CO and CO2? Cheers J
@Outside-In.
@Outside-In. 7 месяцев назад
Thanks J for the comment - much appreciated. My Hofun has been that way ever since I have owned it, so I am thinking of course - it just may be that I received a defective one, so mileage may vary lol... I saw the one you have, and is it actually Hofun or another name?, as there are some monitors that look just like the Hofun and have different branding, but they also have the ability to go into the menu and change parameters. And yes, the Hofun has to warm up as well for a few moments, and that is because the TVOC sensor has to heat up to be able to do it's job. Thanks also for linking to that video also, as I did get a comment from someone who followed the link, and decided to subscribe, so thank you very much J for that - truly grateful. You just have to be cautious about these Chinese made devices, as there are quite a few that sell fakes. I am not saying Hofun is a fake - because it is not, as I have taken the Hofun apart, and it has the sensors, but more than likely it was just a dud, so maybe I should just say - buy with caution lol... The one that you have, looks allot like the EG brand, and that is the one I have been thinking of getting, but just can't afford anything right now. The Langkou in this video is also branded with the EG name, but it is not EG that makes them or Langkou for that matter, they just make money from the sell having their names appllied to them, and may not know that these are inferior, but maybe that is being a bit naive lol. If you have a link to the one you purchased, I will have a look at it, and maybe some day be able to purchase it to replace my Hofun.

Thank you for the information in your videos. My wife and I were suffering in our home after waking up in the morning. But our issues would go away when going to work in the morning. So I know it was a issue with our air in our home. So I bought the HOTKREM. And the model I bought also had the CO2 sensor. But I bought the HOTKREM. Because I thought our issues was a PM issue with our air. This was not the case. As our PM AQI was excellent. The issue was a CO2 issue with our modern well insolated home. We found that our CO2 in our home was around 800 PPM when coming home from work. But by midnight with everyone home. The CO2 was pushing 2000 PPM. To test that a high CO2 level was the issue. I opened 2 windows in our home just enough to keep the CO2 level from rising above 800 PPM with everyone home. This fixed our sleeping issues at night. Now I have to find a better fix then just leaving a window open. Thanks for the videos.
@Outside-In.
@Outside-In. 6 месяцев назад
Great information, and also great troubleshooting... there must be a number of people in your home to cause the CO2 level to go that high. Am glad you found what the issue was. Leaving a window ajar a couple inches should work just fine. A purifier won't help with CO2, so leaving the window ajar at least at night, is really your best option as far as I can see. I will do some thinking about it, and if I come up with a better idea, I can let you know. I myself just got the Hotkrem CO2 monitor with TVOC as well, and will be doing a video review comparing it with my 2 TemTop monitors. Having a house that is as tightly sealed as yours sounds to be, the open window is probably the best option for you. Thanks again for your comment and experience in troubleshooting your air quality issue, as I am sure there will be someone that reads your story, and discovers their problem as well. Have a Merry Christmas

the ones (same casing) with an ozone sensor do not read HCHO just TVOC. Why you didn't reset it?
@Outside-In.
@Outside-In. 6 месяцев назад
First of all, I cannot recommend a monitor that has this type of sensor inside (a multi-use sensor). The TVOC/HCHO sensors are not accurate, and as you saw in this video, this one also was first showing bad numbers, then suddenly would go down to 0.002 or 0.008, and then go to 1.3, and then go to 0.9 or 0.8. I thank you for your suggestion however, and just now took this apart, and hit the reset button, and it just turned off. I then turned it back on, and immediately (after heat-up) showed 2.045 which is way way way off from what the actual air quality is, and after about 10 minutes it is now sitting at 1.075 which is still way way higher than it should be reading, so I would not recommend this device to anyone for reliability at all. I will have to take a look at the ones with an ozone sensor, and see if I can purchase one, but that will have to wait, as I have no funds at all for purchasing another monitor right now. I have a meeting set for Monday to speak to AirGradient, as they like the channel, and are interested in possibly sending me their device for a review video. Thanks for the comment and question - much appreciated. 👍

Thanks Greg for the question. Well, that depends on what you need to know... If you want to know: HCHO TVOC PM 2.5 AQI go with the TemTop M10 If you want to know just CO2: go with the TemTop C10. If you want to know: PM 2.5 PM 10 HCHO TVOC AQI go with (TemTop LKC-1000S+ 2nd Edition). If you want to know: PM 2.5 PM 10 CO2 HCHO go with (TemTop M2000 2nd Edition). It is hard to find an all-in-one. I hope this helps, and please if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

@@GregPrince-io1cb Troubleshooting is what I love doing best of all other... ;). Let's see.... You have been there for 24 years, and not had any issues - Now for "some" reason, - just before Thanksgiving this year, - you are having itchy throats and constant coughing, and are not positive for any sickness, - - hmmmmm. We need to break this down.... 1. What have you changed before Thanksgiving this year, that is out of the ordinary for the two of you?... - such as using Ammonia based cleaning supplies, room deodorizers that you have never used before etc.. 2. What, if anything has changed about how the way the Feed Mill Grainery operates?. Have they added anything new to the way they produce Feed/Grain?... 3. Trains on both sides passing your home, should not have any impact on the two of you because the fumes/gasses they expel, will dissipate pretty quickly, unless the train company has seriously ramped up deliveries that go past your home. If the train company has changed to a different type of fuel, or are using additives that put off ammonia or other such gases as a by-product, those gases will cause itchy throat, and also cause excessive coughing, but you would have to check with the train company for that information. 4. An excessive amount of wool material in your environment that you have not become accustomed too, will also cause itchy throat, which will lead to excessive coughing, - I am pretty sure that is not the issue - but thought I would mention it... 5. Anything that has changed in your way of living since before Thanksgiving can be the culprit, but it is determining what that may be, that could be a little difficult to discern. I am just trying to help you troubleshoot the issue, and during the troubleshooting process, it may very well cause you to remember something that you have indeed added/changed to your way of living, that is different from what you are used too. Sometimes, it is the small insignificant things that have a huge impact without us even considering it to be a problem. If it helps, I myself have had itchy throat and excessive coughing this year more than usual, so who knows what "they" are putting into the air lol... Just sayin` I hope the preceding has helped to joggle something in your memory that you forgot about. You may want to get a gas leak tester, and walk around the neighborhood to find out if there is something in the air that is not wanted. Get a meter that registers a multitude of gases, such as ammonia, methane, propane etc., etc.. The only thing I hate about these types of detectors, is if they detect - say - ammonia, it will not tell you that is what it is detecting. I have been looking for a detector like that, and I have found one made by Smart Sensor, but it is way more than I have to spend right now, so will have to wait to get it, and test it - which will also make another great video. Let me know if any of this has helped in your troubleshooting endeavors... Sorry this response took so long, but trying to troubleshot a problem, can get quite detailed.

@@GregPrince-io1cb Sorry to hear about the cancer, and I truly wish the both of you a Very Merry Christmas. There is something that I forgot to mention last time, which may be also lending to my excessive coughing this year, and that is the on-going wild-fires in Canada. The fires are not just bringing over smoke, but also, all the fumes, gasses that go along with the destruction, and also why allot of people have been experiencing the same symptoms as the two of you. Also, a side note: Air purifiers cannot remove gasses like ammonia, CO2, methane etc., that may be lingering around, so if the symptoms remain, even with the purifiers, it may be nothing more than the air that is coming from the Canada wild fires... Who knows how many years it is going to take to extinguish those fires, but hopefully all of this bad air will stop once they do. Thanks again for your communication, and hopefully you two will get this figured out. Anyway, I just said a prayer for the both of you, and again, I wish the both of you a Very Merry Christmas, and a hope that this all gets better with the New Year... Find someone who needs to laugh, and make it happen, - someone who needs a reason to go on, and give them that reason, and that in turn will cause our problems seem (for just a moment anyway), - a little smaller....
