You are so helpful. I will be starting Abeka 2nd grade with my son in July & I come to you for my preview & preparation. Since kindergarten, you have given me the reassurance I need every year. I love homeschool & watching my children learn has been the most rewarding thing life has offered me lol. Thank you again for doing this channel!!!!
Thank you for these videos! My oldest went through K5 in Abeka and is a very strong reader now. We tried some different things his first grade year though and his spelling is not as strong as it should be and it’s impacting his confidence in writing. Now I’m thinking about circling back to 1st and buzzing through the phonics and language since it should be easier for him at this point and then add in their spelling to give him confidence. I like how you showed that the material really helps isolate/go through the sounds so that they have better comprehension for the spelling and I think thats what he needs.
This was incredibly helpful for me. I've been looking for a 2nd grade curriculum for my son who is great with math- and loved Abeka- but he is working very slowly toward reading and writing
I can see why people love abeka! I do like how colorful it is and in the spelling work book how ithas the cursive underneath the spelling word! Great video as always ❤
Hi! Do you have a video where you recommend which flash cards and “extras” you think are helpful (or necessary) without buying all of them? Trying to buy individual books rather than the whole kit but I’m not sure which flash cards would be most beneficial.
I think I have…it’s been a while since I made these videos so I can’t recall exactly. But in my Abeka playlist I believe whatever I use for kindergarten/1st grade I show in the video and that was what I thought was necessary. Off the top of my head…handbook for reading, the readers, the basic phonics flashcards
I've also been looking at transitioning to BJU English after Abeka. Given your experience, do you think the phonics is Abeka's 2nd grade is necessary? Or is it just review? Didn't know if it made more sense to switch into BJU after Abeka 1st or do 2nd grade phonics first and then switch in 3rd. Also considering switching into BJU spelling.
Hi! Thank you so much for this information for 2nd grade! I am currently finishing Abeka 1st grade with my sons, and I’m wondering if there is enough review in 3rd grade that we could jump to 3rd grade and go slowly…like over two years and avoid the 2nd grade curriculum?
Great flip through, thanks! I’m so torn between Abeka gr 2 LA and TGTB LA level 2 for my son for next year. It’s going to be a tough decision!! Currently using Abeka LA for first grade. Also I agree about abeka’s handwriting- we haven’t done cursive yet so next year I’m going to use A Reason for Handwriting level T- the first half is manuscript review then the second half starts teaching cursive and they write a verse out each week.
It is a tough decision! My oldest started with TGTB LA in 2nd grade and switched to Abeka. My current 2nd grader started with Abeka and switched to TGTB! I think it depends on the child! Good choice on the handwriting ☺️
Ugh...why is taking the plunge into Abeka so tough?! For me, it's the $$$. My 2nd-grade son is doing TGTB Level 2 this year, and it just doesn't quite feel "right." Like, poor flow in lesson structure, very random, homophones every single day? I mean, not the worst, but I feel like teaching LA could be SO MUCH BETTER. Back and forth, back and forth. 😕 (Thanks for your review - you do a great job in explanations!)
I totally get it! Abeka can be expensive but it can be semi reasonable too! It really just depends on what products you get (I’ve never purchased a whole student or parent kit). You don’t need all the extra bells and whistles they offer with Abeka, just the basics will work! And I always buy any non consumables second hand and save money that way. I do see what you mean about TGTB level 2 with the daily homophone practice. We’re doing level 2 now and it works great for my daughter, but if you are looking for more structure and rhythm and teaching one thing to the next in a logical way, I’ll be honest, Abeka does a better job at that. One concept flows right into the next.
