That's a good question! The first step should be to also develop an overall comprehension, like understanding texts in written and spoken form and/or videos etc. Depending on the language, it can of course also help or be even necessary to also understanding a bit of the structure of the language. I just noticed that while learning Turkish. To get a good overview, languagetransfer is a great tool. In the end it's very individual and there are many ways that lead to success.

Also, I was delighted to hear about the banjo challenge, I think I will join along with you! I bought a banjo and had a handful of lessons over a decade ago, but dropped it because I thought it was too difficult being left-handed and learning right-handed. It would be fun to pick it up and try again. I also have nothing but good things to say about Language Transfer, and I’m using it for both German and Spanish. I’ll definitely try out the Music theory course. I’m married to a college music professor, so I could at least put in a tiny bit of effort ;) Best of luck this year with your many educational goals! I’ve always been interested in it, but it seems a bit confusing. My understanding is that you walk while repeating short phrases without ever pausing the ausio, but then aren’t you having to talk over the audio that’s coming in? It seems like it’d make it difficult to follow what you’re repeating.

Nice summary of last year and what you’re going to do this year. I find many strategies that work for language learning also work for learning musical instruments. The most important thing is to show up everyday. This year I’m learning Japanese, I’m re-learning German, I’m working on the trombone and ukulele, and advancing in Python. Your video on time tracking has helped a lot, thanks.

My plans are: To sit the Exam on Spanish (A2) the next week To continue using Duolingo in order to drill a good pronunciation To finish the first Harry Potter Book and Eclipse of Stephany Meyer French. Just listen to podcasts, read some news. Maybe use Duolingo for a better pronunciation. If I have time after Bachelor Thesis, I want to finish some books German. To write the papers for this Semester and to write my Bachelor thesis in German. English. Just use it for reading and preparing for the Thesis. Polish. Eventually watch some videos. If necessary read something for my thesis. Ukrainian. Not to forget. It's my native language. Russian. To forget. But is it possible? In general I want to teach myself to consume more written content in my advanced languages and more audio-visual content in my weaker languages. Futhermore I want to learn to use all the languages every day, because generally I use only 4 of them Ukrainian/German/English/French, or Ukrainian/German/English/Spanish. One can often hear some Russian in Ukrainian news, so sometimes it is difficult to avoid that. Maybe I should totaly avoid the news in Ukrainian, because of Russian episodes there. Polish is quite easy to understand and to follow, even advanced texts, but I am not that advanced in writing and speaking, because I start to mix this beautiful language with some Ukrainian. Maybe I should watch the news about Ukraine in Polish. They always translate Russian, so, maybe I would have a chance to forget some Russian.
Wow, Mariana, you are like me, working on many things at the same time. I wish you good luck with your Spanish Exam! Such a nice language to learn with so many interesting resources. About French, that sounds like you already have achieved a good level and are now keeping it sharp to work further on it later. So you live in Germany? Having written the papers and the thesis in German will be quite an achievement! A great challenge :). What is the thesis about? Has Polish been hard for you to learn, being already a native speaker of a Slavic language? It's interesting that even our native language can get rusty. I think I should also do more to work on my German and maybe read something that's really complex and challenging and then write something about it. I know that with the war currently going on and all the atrocities that are happening due to that, it may be hard to view the Russian language in a good light… But a language is bigger than politics and belongs to all the people that are speaking them. Putin doesn't own the Russian language, and neither his loyal vassals. There will be peace one day, but for the wounds to heal it'll take lots of time. Looking at Germany and France nowadays gives me hope. If those 2 countries can get so intertwined and close with each other after having fought in 2 world wars and endless other wars against each other, then others can do it, too. I like the plan you have for further improving your languages. Especially when you are intermediate/advanced, it can make sense to focus on more complex things to read like novels, where they use more expressions etc. than in regular conversations.
@@DustinSchermaul I don't know, whether I am one of that people, who learns many languages from scratch at the same time. My first language barrier was with russian. There was always a lot of content in russian and in my childhood I have heard a lot of russian. I always understood that language, but the real barrier I had to overcome was after school, when I read a lot of literature. When you don't notice in which language is written and read in it as if it is you mother tongue, you really advanced. After russian I learned English, mainly at school. I learned only English, no intentional learning of russian. When my English was pretty decent I learned parallel some Polish. Mainly listening, reading something, speaking to people. Actually my grandma was a Polish person, so I have already known the meaning of some words. From the dialect of the place, where I used to live I knew a lot. Polish is not a language, that I can speak automatically, I always need the time to switch, but the understanding is much easier. I would say, that knowledge of russian and Ukrainian helps a lot. Some Vocabulary sounds like Ukrainian, some like Russian, some look very antique and obviously some words are unique. And maybe at the same time I fell in love with German. It was a long love. I feel like I am almost fluent. I feel, that I am reading a little bit slower than natives, sometimes I use uncommon language patterns. That's why I would need somebody who would read my thesis and correct some mistakes. And I have accent. My topic would be about pH of some Wood species 🪵 and research on the variation of the pH level of the same wood species from different regions, different age. When I had less problems with my German I started learning french in a very lazy way (starting with an app for pronunciation, then translate subtitles of videos, understanding videos and finally reading). As a result, l don't know grammar. I feel it somehow, but I cannot express myself. So, maybe I am intermediate with my understanding, but I don't speak or write. And after some time, I started learning Spanish, because it was offered in my university. To sum up, yes, there are many languages, with which I have contact. I didn't do them at the same time, but it's like hoard, the older you are, the more things you possess. I want almost to promise myself not to touch any other languages. Just use, what I have, learn to express myself more sophisticated, read, become really comfortable and advanced in every of them, train my accent. Quality over quantity. Even if I find Croatian interesting, Italian sounds good and Chinese has beautiful symbols, l should stop myself, because I want to have a deeper knowledge of that, what I have learned.
@@marianavytvytska6998 So from scratch is hard, but at different stages it's a different thing ;). I like to have one beginner language and other than that only intermediate/advanced ones. When you didn't even notice and also doesn't get tired reading it! Often when I struggle through reading, I can tell by how fast I'm getting tired, what level I have in terms of comprehension. I only heard horror stories about the Polish language and that it has many irregularities and hard to pronounce words :D. But I guess it always depends on the starting point. Maybe if it's the first Slavic language that it might be a struggle. German: Well, using uncommon language patterns is not bad… Those particularities and details can only be really worked on by massive exposure and speaking, I guess. Also, having an accent is nothing to be worried about ;). With shadowing, an accent can be changed, but then the question is if it's worth spending that time… Or rather, learning other languages. I would read your thesis, but I have no idea of the science around wood. For your French, perhaps language transfer would help you out! Thank you so much, Alex! That's a really good question, and I struggle to break through that barrier in other languages. For English, my breakthrough has been once I really started using the language with lots of speaking and writing. Before that and also up to this day, I'm consuming English content every day. It has become my main language right now, but there are still fields, in which I struggle to find the right vocabulary. Learning never ends. Long Story short: Reading and listening are both great! Ideally, combine the two! And then also make sure to produce the language in written and spoken form. You'll get there!
