Canadian cinematographer Yves Bélanger has built a truly interesting body of work through collaboration with his compatriot, director Jean-Marc Vallée. As we can see in films like Dallas Buyers Club, Wild, and Demolition, and in the impressive HBO series Big Little Lies, they have teamed up to create a naturalistic style that is always aware of their actors’ reactions. But he's also had the opportunity to demonstrate his talent with other directors, like the always-colorful, always-musical, always-unabashed Xavier Dolan. In this new installment of our series “Language of the Image” we take a look at his impressive oeuvre as well as what makes him unique - like his declaration of undying love for the ARRI Alexa camera, which he works with almost exclusively.
Watch Now: Laurence Anyways, with cinematography by Bélanger.
Directors aren’t the only ones who shape the character and feel of our favorite movies!
