Good review! I hiked 600 km with this tent the GPT in Patagonia. Held up with no problems to rain, storms and some really high winds. Light, easy to set up, simplicity. On warm and humid nights just kept the door open for extra ventilation. And yes, because the tent is bigger, when I had condensation, I did not touch the walls, so no problem at all, just dry it the next day very quickly.

I like how you talk about the height of your setup including your personal dimensions because a lot of people don't think about how that affect contact with the tent depending on the tent design. You go into actual livability aspects such as talking about where the pole is in relation to you and your bag and such. I appreciate it.

It's SO important! Someone laying down in an empty tent does not give anyone a good representation of how much room is actually in the tent!

I bought the 'standard' Lanshan 1 and sold it on before even using it, because although it looked really well made, the interior space was just too tight (and I'm not particularly tall at 5'11"). I bought the Pro version (in green) and the increase in interior space is amazing! Love this tent, which I've been using for 'stealth camping' in the woods during lockdown. One 'tip' if I may - The mesh surround needs to slope downwards from the top of the bathtub towards the ground, otherwise drips of condensation will cross the mesh and form puddles on the floor. This slope is tricky to get right, and is not possible if you have your pole set too high. Disagree with your asessment of the fabric change! 20D is just better, period, and a bit of seam-sealing didn't kill anyone. Despite your admirable use of it in snow etc, I still see this as a fairer-weather option, and will be sticking with my Hexpeak V4A in harsher conditions. But a sub-700g practical tent at this price? What's not to like?
@JustinOutdoors
@JustinOutdoors 4 года назад
Ya, my 20d gripe was pretty minor but I think the seam sealing will turn a lot of people off of it! People want turn key solutions. haha

I have the regular version. The best tent around for the money spent/weight ratio. 2weeks ago I was caught in a bad thunderstorm in the Uwharrie Mountains NC, we got 4inches of rain that night. I stayed 100% dry inside. There was literally a1inch river flowing under the tent, I had my shoes sitting on my z-seat under the vestibule, they were floating. I am interested in the pro version, I'll probably get it once something breaks on my current model. That might be awhile though, this thing is made pretty damn well.

Hey Justin. Thanks for your great reviews, but you said in 10:24 that this tent is heavier.! but in Aliexpress site, I can see its lighter (pro is 690 gm), and the (the old one "Lanshan 1" is 845 gm)! So is it heavier than the old one, or is there something I didn't understand? and is it worth to pay an extra 30 US$ for the pro? Thanks Again : )
@JustinOutdoors
@JustinOutdoors 4 года назад
Must have mispoken. The OG Lanshan 1 I have was 780g on my scale. The Pro is 690g on my scale. I think it is paying the extra for the Pro just for the extra space. If the extra space isn't needed, then maybe not.
@TheNomadicTrader
@TheNomadicTrader 4 года назад
Just bought this! Haven't tested it yet, but chose the Pro over the predecessor. The extra weight from the heavier denier nylon is off-set by the fact it's single wall. It still comes in 200g lighter than the first edition I believe. Nice review, thanks. Rob
@JustinOutdoors
@JustinOutdoors 4 года назад
Only 90g less than the predecessor on my scale! I would have liked to see a bit more weight loss for going from double to single walled. Very solid tent though and I think the 20d will be bomb proof!

Hi Justin, thanks for this review - great to see you are still stoked about this tent even after multiple uses! Definitely a recommend if ultra light solo back packing tent is your thing. I would recommend having a look at 'how to' seam sealing videos - key point squeeze out some sealer into a small pot, thin down with white spirit to consistency of runny honey and with small paint brush apply a thin line carefully to the sewn seams - including bath tub floor corners - no biggie...

You had me, until "winter hiking days". You have a BIG responsibility when you recommend a 2/3 season tent for use in the winter. This is by no means a tent for that 4th season!
@JustinOutdoors

I was speaking to my own experiences. I have used the tent many days in the winter with no problems. Is it meant for expeditions? Definitely not. But it can get by for winter use.
@GuilhermeBianeck

Sleeping bag and inflatable pads with insulation protects you against winter times, the tent does little if you've got a good sleeping setup. Talking by my own experience.
@palbal
@palbal 3 года назад
@@GuilhermeBianeck It's probably our different definition of winter that is the problem here. Often in YT videos, both from the UK and US, other hikers are on "winter" hikes, but for us living here in Norway, winter is for most part something totally different. We often refer to a 5th season due to the often hard winter up here.Therefore, a tent need thicker outer material, solid inner, better stitching, more and stronger guyouts and different and more winter practical construction. Based on +30 years hiking, this is my experience, as well as selling outdoor gear and guiding others for years.

I think they swapped to a 20 denier because of one issue with the 15 used on the "regular" Lanshans. When they get wet in sustained rain the regular Lanshans flies *really* sag, I mean *really*. I am fairly certain they got a few complaints about that issue so with the pro they were likely trying to limit this issue.
@JustinOutdoors
@JustinOutdoors 3 года назад
I have definitely noticed the sagginess, but the reason the pro doesn't is due to the silicone treatment. I imagine they could have done the same to a 15d.

It rained hard on my first night but along with my gear l was bone dry in the morning. Condensation was no worse than in other tents lve owned but easily wiped down. The 2 pro seems to have the exact same space as the Duplex, which is often considered a castle. So I should be good :)

The new ones are silpoly with next to noting in sagging when wet. I have a silpoly tarp and it does not sag when wet so I believe that tent wouldn't either. It's not being done by the manufacturer because of the time involved. It would increase the cost quite a bit. I would like to see the price drop a bit on the Lanshan Pro tents.

Great review! looking for an ultralight tent to use on a cross country motorcycle trip. Amazon says it packs down to 13x6 inches. Can you confirm or deny the packed up dimensions? Im hoping this would fit inside a saddle bag.
@JustinOutdoors

I currently have it packed in a bag that ends up being 12x5.5. It swill has quite a bit of room to squish down. I think I could probably squish it to 6x6 or so.

I have used this tent and it was leaking under medium heavy rain, and yes I have seam sealed the tents. It was raining under a couple of hours and it was like a very light shower inside the tent. We were actually a group that was camping and we used two lanshan 2 pro and one pro1 and all had the same issue, Every tent had water inside the tent in the morning. I would not rely on this tent for more challenging hikes. The construction is fine but I could never recommend to buy this tent. Very sad to say this, but you have to buy the real original stuff or maybe the old lanshan model. The old Lanshan have a rating on the outer fly of 5000mm waterproof index and the pro have 2000mm. Maybe the older model is more secure?
@JustinOutdoors

Are you sure the water inside the tent wasn't condensation? I've had the 1 pro and 2 pro in pouring rain and have never had any leakage.

The rain fly is attached to the tent. It's a single walled tent, so there is only one piece of material between you and the sky.

Hi Justin, I just ordered a 1 pro after watching your review but I’m still puzzled what the exact pole height should be. Lanshan drawing says 125 cm. But you pitch it at 130 ? And if I want to order a carbon pole for it I need a figure!
@JustinOutdoors

I use a 126cm pole and it works great. If I want to pitch it higher for more air flow, I may set my trekking pole to 130cm (if I have it). Usually I'm using 126cm!

I just tried to set this tent up for the first time, did my best with tensioning all the guylines as good as i could. Still the side of the tube is kind of flat(ter) then the rest by the perimeter. I walked the northern part of the Kungsleden trail in north sweden with a lanshan 2 tent last year september. At times very windy conditions, and not much shelter to be found. The tent held up fine, but it was storming inside the tent at times since the inner is not solid, in cold nights you could feel the wind steal the warmth from the sleeping bag, brrrr. Didn't matter much if pitched lower. I don't recommend lanshan tents for scandinavia. Will bring a tent with semi solid inner next time.
