The fairly unknown country of Laos still appears to be living a peaceful and sleepy life. With its small population, it still preserves most of its oriental traditions while trying to slowly conform to a fast changing world. The foggy and never ending eastern tip of the Himalayan Range and the Mekong river valleys give the country of Laos a character that has allowed past kingdoms to develop and flourish.

Hi. Oh, but you missed the Phan Don (Thousand Islands) near Pak Se. I saw this on another video. The Mekong has a lot more water flowing: biggest catfish, fresh water dolphins, some inhabited islands you can visit, and of course, the waterfalls!!!!! I lived in Vientiane from birth to 15 years old but we never saw anything. We left because the communists were coming. I want to go back at least once to see many of Laos' beauty. The same of the video is a little incorrect. It's Lane Xang, pronounced Lan Sang. Lan = thousand. Sang = elephants. Capital is pronounced Vieng Chanh. The French spelled it Vientiane according to french pronunciation. The spanish pronunciation is Vieng Chan. Jajaja The vietnamese spelling is Viêng Chằn.

Beautiful country, beautiful documentary. Ironic about the title since not a single elephant was shown either roaming or in captivity. But the topography and soul of the country seems pristine and fabulous after all these times of changes taking place in the surrounding region. I think progress and industrialization would somehow ruin it's beauty that's locked in time and era of long ago.

This documentary was just made in 2018 and it didn't mention the growing Chinese establishment in Laos. I think soon the China will take over Laos because I have visit Laos in 2015 and then went back during same time period this documentation was made I notice the Chines were building bridge, building, road/railroad and house every where in the 3 years since I was there. This was my view of Laos's future. If this kept up, soon Laos people will be slave to the Chinese as they start to over take the land and its natural resources.
@tuberobotto
@tuberobotto 3 года назад
Actually, this docu video was made in 2007 as can be seen at the end credits. Also, the Chinese take over I think is less of a surprise since Laos sadly adopted a Communist form of government which we all know at this time, brings nothing good to whichever region it touches, same with the coming of the CCP, nothing good will ever come of it.

I'm sorry to say, but you are an idiot. China's investment just like American Investment are everywhere in the world, all country has the right to negotiate and invest in other country. And does not have China geopolitical ambition in Laos. There are just as much American, Thai and French presence in Laos and ALL 3 of those country have invaded Laos one way or the other in the past, how come I never heard people complain about them? Racist much??? Laos needs to grow its economy and the most efficient and cost effective way is to work with China, or do you expect America to build Laos a high speed rail when it can't even build such things for its own people? All the Chinese I have meet in Laos are just ordinary people just like everyone else who are trying to live a good life, to say they are there to enslave Laos just shows your stupid fucking ignorance, now stfu before you make a fool of yourself.

My Thai GF & I traveled by Mini Bus from Luang Phrabang to Phonsovan in 2010. Every 25 to 40 km, the bus would drive thru a small Hmong village on a 1km straight piece of road. These are all old CIA LIMA secret Air Bases. They were used extensively from 1965 to 1975. These bases supplied the local Hmong Guerrillas operating against the Pathet Lao Communists & especially the invading Vietnamese. Vietnam has effectively occupied the eastern 35% of Laos & Cambodia from North to South. They ethnically cleansed the local Laos & Cambodians. The Vietnamese didn't massacre the locals, just ordered them to move out or they would be killed. So the locals abandoned their villages, which are now occupied by Vietnamese farmers & Hanoi Government Agencies. 100% Vietnamese. A Lao Engineer confirmed this info to me in Thahket.

Brian Lester I agree. But their culture is so different. It would never be like the western world just because the culture are very different. Medical wise, the people wouldn’t be ok with some of the things we do here, they’d often just rather do their rituals and use herbal medicine, sometimes due to not believing in the medical system and sometimes due to not being able to afford it. It’s sad, but there, people often die just from an appendicitis because they didn’t know, or just rather refuse a surgery, or can’t afford it. Example, non medical but just as difference from where I’m from, California: I went to Laos in 2010. The flight from Thailand to Laos was scheduled for 7pm. At 7:30 no plane. I started getting worried. I went to ask the lao airline desk and they said they don’t know what’s going on. 8:00pm comes around and now I’m really worried that maybe flight got cancelled. Asked desk again and same answer. So I sat and just waited while worried as heck to what’s going on. 8:40 and plane rolls in. Me and my people are worried as hell, while the Lao passengers just shrugged it off and just got ready and got on the plane. What I’m saying is that in California, or anywhere in the USA, a plane being almost 2 hours late is unacceptable with no notice or information on delay. But I was later told that that’s the culture, everyone is relaxed and whatever happens happens attitude. Everyone is usually always late. And while I’m in the country, I notice the culture was the same way. I booked a tour in Luang Prabang, and it said 8am, but the tour guide didn’t show up til 9:15. No one seemed to care though 🤷🏻‍♂️....... so I don’t think it’ll ever be as advanced or catch up to western countries, but in all honesty, I think the locals couldn’t care less anyways.
@junjungatbos3548
@junjungatbos3548 3 года назад
@@00ninja00 Thats funny you say they could never be "advanced" as the west. Whereas in the west diseases and premature deaths are rampant compared to that country. Plus, there's nothing wrong with "rituals" and herbal medicines. I lived in California my whole life and the first part of my life i was taught to believe in conventional medicines, hospitals, etc...not to mention i became an alcoholic at a young age and remained one for 25 years..Western medicine did nothing for me. It was until i learned Eastern teachings of Buddhism and Hinduism that my addiction has completely ended--through natural means only (i havent partcipated in the " health care system" in 20 yrs) I dont think you can compare a country still enriched in spiritual beliefs (Laos) to a country entrenched in materialism and Western thought. I could imagine that when your plane was late you might have exibited signs of nervousness and rise in blood pressure--Mostly ego driven symptoms. Which can be unhealthy in the long run...Kinda reminds me of and Eastern saying..."let go, or be dragged" haha...anyways. take it easy🙋‍♂️
@00ninja00
@00ninja00 3 года назад
@@junjungatbos3548 I agree with you. And I don’t mean they’ll never catch up In a bad way, I’m fact what I meant was that it’ll never be like the west in a good way, due to very different cultures. That’s what I mean by the locals couldn’t care less if the plane was late. We in the West are taught to get all worried if the plane was few hours late. And I come from Laos, ancestors I mean. I also grew up very westernized but I knew my roots and my family often practiced a lot of the eastern medicine, spiritual things and herbal medicine. Visiting Laos opened us my eyes to my parents and grandparents ways. I always misunderstood their ways, but not until I got to experience my ancestors lifestyles, I didn’t understand why they are the way they are. I now appreciate the easy going, life’s stress lifestyle. But even in Laos, the big cities like Vientiane is not the same anymore. People there are very westernized now. Materialistic as the west. In Vientiane, there’s a care dealer that sells $500k lambos and Ferraris! But the countryside and mountain people still live a lot like they’ve always did, with tha added cell phone in everyone’s hand, and everyone has a Facebook account! Hahaha

Thank you so much for producing and sharing this very nice documentary. "Lan Chang" should be "Laan Xaang." By calling "Lan Chang" is somewhat disrespectful. It appeared that you did your research in Thailand. Thank you.

Vang Vieng was a heddonistic Ferang play ground when I was there in 2010. Wild beer pong parties c/w a lot of drunk & drugy young foreigners. Many were injured & quite a few died or drowned. The Lao shut it all down in about 2012; but Trip Advisor indicates there are still 3 loud bars on the tube trips today in 2019.

@@MrMaj5757 Prior to 2012, there was like 20 Bars on the river and another 25 in the town. All roared for 12 hours per day x 365 days a year. 100's of foreigners were injured every month & about 20 per year died. The carnage was a pain in the ass, for the various Embassies, which are in Vientianne, 2 hours by road. This is a small Lao Town of about 5000 permanent residents. There is maybe a small hospital with limited triage capabilities c/w doctors & nurses with questionable credentials. That's why the Lao Govts shut it down. Now there is just a few bars on the river.

Norman McKinnon this town is a place for drugs. If foreigners come to this town for vacation “ you are here for drugs use” not to see the beauty of the country. There are lots of other beautiful mountains range to see.

@Da Phetdala Neutral my A.. Laos been under control by the French since the Indochina times so idk what kind of neutral you're talking about here. The north Vietnamese invade Laos to use Laos or get Laos involve to fight against the French and the Americans whom siding them. They even try to take control some parts of Vietnam and Cambodia, which why Vietnam war triggers because the communist didn't bow down to these white people and let them have it their way, it's all political related. If the communist didn't do anything Laos would have been under control by the French until today, imeant why the F they care who take control of Laos? They have their own country their own lands all the way in other side of the world, and doing wealthy. If only these white people just f-off and leave us be many innocent people wouldn't have so much suffer and lost their lives. Whatever i said there's no way i can make white men sluts to see the same points of view as me, but i know what's right and wrong.
@Pred4tor83
@Pred4tor83 4 года назад
@Da Phetdala History book that written by white people? The French divide Laos Esarn land to Thailand, building railroads and many structures and you called that barely? If Laos gained Manarchy 1950 than why the French and Americans assign who to be leader for Laos huh? Why do they still wondering around? Give me the reason why the Vietnam war happen if it wasn't because of the communist try to chase white people out, imeant Vietnam didn't fly planes oversea to bombs America like Japan, so what reason do you have? Let me give you a 100% true is what going to happen if the communist don't do anything. King Savana will probably still be the leader like how the white people want, and after the king die, Vang Pao will take control which is already stat in the documentary that's how white people would want it to happen and that's mostly the reason why the Hmong fought the communist for. Then Laos would have become Hmong country so knock yourself in the head for me and think about my words right or wrong.
@Pred4tor83
@Pred4tor83 4 года назад
@Da Phetdala I understand that all those suck white people dick will live more wealthier life that's because they get the help from them, but since i don't have a brain like you i rather build my own house with my own two hands instead of have others help you and they gain benefits from you. And again the way your talking is like North Korea want to hurt South Korea and there goes again your heroic Americans occupied there, base there to protect South Korea? I don't think a one bit that North Korea would want to hurt South Korea cause no matter what they still have the same ancestry. Imeant rich or poor if North Korea want to destroy south Korea you think it's too hard to do so? I know myself well that im a reasonable person to judge whats right and wrong so there's no way i can make you or people like you out there to understand. And don't get me wrong cause It's not that i like the communist but my question is who is the good guy? Laos have live long suffer, and many lives has lost if it not because of your heroic white people?
