Laowa 7.5mm Lens Test for Vlogging w/GH5

I was watching a video from the Camera Conspiracies channel about shooting out a few micro 4/3 lenses, but the store he was at wouldn’t open a new Laowa 7.5mm lens for him to try, so I figured I’d give my own Laowa a try for flogging on my Panasonic GH5. CC has a G85 so the crop and look will be similar. I normally use this lens with my Inspire 1 Pro drone when I don’t use the Olympus 12mm. After having this lens for a few months, I can say I’m very happy with the purchase. I have the “Ultra Light” version that sheds a few grams to work better on a drone, but it would help a little with the weight on your arm when vlogging. It’s only 20 bucks more for the light version. I also do a shootout against the Lumix 12-35 f2.8 Mk II lens just to get an idea of the differences.

Makes me laugh when I eat lunch lol. Great test man thanks for doing this! Did you have the IBIS set to 7.5mm or around there? That's where I messed my test up with the wide angle lenses, I had my set to 24 for the Mitakon. Feel free to keep doing more tests, I'm subscribing ;) See if you can take a super close up picture of your eye with that lens, like an iridology photo. If it works, I'll buy that thing!

When I put on the 7.5mm lens, every time I turn on the camera a dialog comes up asking if I want to use 7.5 setting, and I say yes. When I put back on the 12-35mm lens it doesn't ask anything, and just adjusts auto-magically. So at least with the Laowa there is an alert to remind you to think about what focal length you are using. That may be a GH5 feature the G85 doesn't have. The extra grand is so you don't have to think as much! I will take a shot with my eye up close, but later on. I did just test and the lens can focus to something about 3 finger widths away. The eye is not filling the frame at that distance, and being so close presents a shadow issue. WA isn't the lens for that. Get a longer focal and back up a little till the eye fills the frame. I'll try at 1080, then at 4k and zoom in on the timeline. I have to set up a tripod and get my app running because I can't see the screen clearly that close up. Hey, what's your name by the way?

Awesome, thanks man. Name is Kasey ;) Yea I figured I'd probably need a macro lens for that. Was hoping to kill 2 birds with 1 stone lol.

Hi Chad, great review. I think that lens is probably the best MFT for vlogging without paying silly money. I've just got an E1 and am using an Olympus 9mm for close dialogue stuff. Although the Olympus is a fisheye, it's not too bad. If I get more into using MFT for filming , the Laowa 7.5mm will be at the top of my list. It looks great and gives a fantastic FoV with liveable minimum distortion for getting in close for dialogue. If you're interested in microphones for cameras etc. I do a lot of that kind of stuff on my channel. Again, great video. Cheers, Dave.

Hey man great video! Very informative and entertaining. I was thinking of getting it for the same reason you were using it at the end while playing the guitar. I saw you reach and adjust the focus while you were sitting. Would you say the camera was about arm's length away when you did that?

Yes, as you can see in the video!

@@theRobertDG Thanks man! Overall I would say it's a great lens to have with my GH5. At the moment I'm using my GH5 as a web cam, but it's far enough back to be able to use the Lumix 12-35, and I use the Panasonic app to focus, or autofocus since I'm not moving around much. I still grab the 7.5mm if I'm walking around in the house or in a car. Just don't move around TOO much or the edges look wobbly. At this time I've moved from the bedroom to a garage studio I've build. Much more room, and great to be in a separate space to create in. Cheers!

@@ChadWork1 I have a GH5 as well so it was good seeing your video to know exactly what it would look like. I don't plan on walking around with it so much but I don't have a lot of space in my room to back up from the camera so I was thinking about this lens. Thanks for the info and yeah must be nice to have a separate lab space to create in!

Yeah I still notice a bunch of wobbles in the corners from IBIS. I wonder if you cropped it in if it would be gone?

I have a Samyang 7.5mm f3.5 lens for the gh5 and I don't understand it shakes so much even when stationary? I don't understand what I am doing wrong as when I see youtube examples, their footage is much more smooth? any advice?
@ChadWork1
@ChadWork1 4 года назад
I'm not sure, but when I put on the Laowa 7.5mm and turn on my camera, the camera asks me to confirm that it's a 7.5mm lens, and I think that may stop the shaking but I don't know how to get to that menu manually.

Man I remember 10 years ago when I wanted steady fluid footage you HAD to buy an expensive glidecam. No other way around it. Now that is basically isn't necessary when you have amazing IBIS
@ChadWork1
@ChadWork1 5 лет назад
IBIS isn't perfect, but if you're just standing and hand holding it's not bad. Walking, not so much.

@@ChadWork1 compared top ten years ago it's perfect to me. Obviously not gimbal like of course but no way in hell you could hand hold a camera and get fluid shots ten years ago especially with DSLR

Hi! Thanks for this review, tested this lens last week for vlog, my shots are very shaky, bad settings on my part on the GH5 ? (some settings to do manualy on the GH5 for this lens ?) Sorry for my english, I'm french ! ;)
@ChadWork1
@ChadWork1 5 лет назад
Valentin Gergaud the lens has no stabilization. Only the GH5 sensor has stabilization. The camera will be more steady if you mount it on a small tripod like I used. Holding the camera alone will be more shaky.

The distortion was nowhere near as pronounced as I expected. With a stronger ND filter, you could probably use that lens wide open in harsh daylight too (If that's a thing to do lol). I'm actually now considering getting this lens now!
@ChadWork1
@ChadWork1 6 лет назад
Yes I was thinking a 1.2 ND would have given me a tad more bokeh.
