Laowa Nanomorph 27mm & 50mm Hands-on - Small Size, Big on Flaring

It’s an auxiliary effect. The big deal was squeezing a wide screen image into a 35mm frame of film, back when it was about $10 a finished second to shoot 65mm film which was the original format for wide screen film production and screening.

I absolutely love the build quality of my laowa. I have a laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5x - It is a special lens yes but the build quality is absolute on top. ;)

I wanna see these on the X-H2S in open gate 3:2 mode. With a slight crop you'll be able to get a 2.39:1 CinemaScope look using the full (almost) sensor!

IMO the draw of anamorphic is not the flare or the oval bokeh, it's the field of view of a wide lens but the flattering perspective of a normal or narrower focal length.. how people miss this point is weird. that is what really gives it a cinematic look. I have one of these, it's excellent. and it's hella small for an anamorphic lens, ridiculously small and light.

I’m glad this exists for short films and what not. What’s goin to be weird is seeing you tubers use this for standard content when it doesn’t add any storm value.

It's very small and very convenient for me to use the gimbal. This is a very interesting review.

Amazing how small and cheap anamorphic lenses have gotten, but still can't beat an ISCO red + taking lens for sharpness and clarity with exceptional anamorphic feel. Even the Vazens cant compare. Unless you go Atlas or Arri Masters, the ISCO is the only serious way to get actual quality anamorphic without mortgaging the house :D

Oh man. I'd love to see what these babies look like on a GH6 in EF mount with a speedbooster. Shooting in 4:3 anamorphic mode you should get something similar to 16:9!

The 1.5x squeeze is better than 1.33x but is it enough? I have the Vazen 40mm 1.8x squeeze and it gets the job done, but you could buy this whole set for the price of that one lens.

Still waiting for the 40mm EOS mount 2x Anamorphic for sub $1 000. And I'll probably have to continue waiting indefinitely. :P

They just added a silver flare to their lineup...what are your thoughts on that vs the other flare colors amber and blue?

The Siruii 1.6x is actually 1.575x. The difference is very minor to these.

Definitely would use the 35 and 50 with a C70. I am just infatuated with that cine camera.

Well Kai, OK not completely, butt Thorium is metal so at least part metal lens. At least in some vintage sometimes yellowish nice glass, sorry metal. Do I usually spell Butt, Butt well it depends what butt.

price is a bit much. considering Sirui has about a hundred models that are cheaper. And you don't have to deal with crowdfunding nonsense. (really crowdfunding should be prohibited for established companies)

Is putting a uv filter do kill the flare effect ?

I prefer fake anamorphic for my family vacation videos.

pincushion and barrel distortion in anamorphic lenses is part of the cinematic look. almost no films with these lenses in Hollywood correct that, or even could correct it historically. if you are a dentist photographer looking for perfection you probably don't appreciate character or personality and are chasing idiots perfection in your photography, which nobody but you will ever care about. these are for people with an artistic aesthetic eye. the distortion is welcomed.

For me it's neither flares no bokeh. I want distortion like Wes Anderson has. Lowa has nothing for me.

The hell with the flare, I just want to leverage the maximum amount of photodiodes for my sensor. It is incredibly annoying that they are marketing towards people that are bedazzled by the stupid flares. I don't want additive colors to my lens... Absolutely ridiculous
