Lapponia or Laponia is the Latin name of the historic region, later province (landskap), of Lappland, a large area covering the northern part of present Sweden and Finland.
Malin Sofia Katarina Berggren (born 31 October 1970) is a former member of the band Ace of Base. Having been interested and involved in music since her childhood, she formed the band in 1987, along with her sister Jenny, her brother Jonas and their friend Ulf Ekberg. Before forming Ace of Base, Malin sang in her church's choir.[1] She was born in Gothenburg, Sweden.
When Ace of Base was signed to Danish label Mega Records in 1990, Malin, or Linn as she became known, chose to put her teaching career on hold. But while her sister Jenny has stated she always wanted to be a singer, Linn has never said anything similar. On the contrary, in 1997 Linn said: "I wanted to sing; I never wanted to be a singer". Linn's vocal range is contralto; she is recognized by her distinguishable vibrato.

More info: Malin did this one and some others at home using a 4-track cassette recorder. When tracks for album II were to be selected, a general meeting in Stockholm was organized - Ace Of Base would present their demos and a congregation of record company envoys would select the "magic hits" needed to follow up the startling results achieved by their first album. Showing up: Scandinavia + Finland, London Rec's UK, for mainland Europe Polygram in Germany while Arista USA stayed away stating "we do our own A&R and don't need help in that". My job was to represent Megasong Publishing and sub-publisher Warner-Chappell. Malin came with her cassette recorder - the rest of Ace Of Base had CDs recorded in a studio. For "Lapponia" she had a long, may I say, political speech about Lapponia / Lappland and the Lapps. Their Territory is now sub-divided between Finland, Norway and Sweden covering the land of the Midnight Sun and eternal snow and ice. Her point was that Lapps should have an autonomy and their rights acknowledged even though they are not "official citizens" in those three countries as they roam back-and-forth across borders. The song was deemed to be "too political" for an Ace Of Base release while I thought it could be a National Hymn! This is why I did what you hear - it's an overdub of her original cassette version and meant as a reference for a brand-new recording that however didn't happen, but the clean playback without vocals is still available.

And this is the whole problem with the music industry. It's not enough for record companies and their execs to put their hand in the pockets of an early band and then milk them practically dry when they finally 'hit it big'. They also have to screw with their music production, selection, image, etc, etc. I think its fine for them, as investors, to "offer" constructive critiques, first impressions, suggestions and recommendations and new work is coming together, and inquire on various aspects. But... this grand "congregation" you mention, of international record company proxies coming together to "select" music for the next record. That's like, WTF?!? The BAND is the only people, with the exception of perhaps their close working producers, who should be offering their opinion of what should and should not be on any band's album. And this is why they always "kill the goose with that lays the golden eggs". They just can't stop themselves from f*cking things up. Ask Linn how she felt to have her very important and very personal contribution rejected TWICE for inclusion on two separate albums. I only know about this by reading her Wiki page. And, btw, where TF were the other band mates? And her brother Jonas? Why weren't they standing up for her and saying, no, sorry guys, this one is going in or you get no album. Take us to court if you like, we'll just break our contract and make some other record company millions. Your choice. Maybe this was too early in their careers for them all to have the balls to stand up to this kind of systematic pressure by record execs. But again, this is the problem. Mass exploitation. Alas, taking advantage of young, naive people with little power or experience, just starting out in their careers is very common across all industries. Capitalistic greed is the dark underbelly driving all of it.

@@privatename3621 I think it's unfair to assume her siblings/band didn't stand up for her in any way. Also you had me until "capitalistic" greed. Greed is universal, existed long before capitalism was created, permeates all economic/social structures throughout humanity, and always will exist sadly. The music industry is indeed a joke though...upper brass are almost never artists themselves.

Increíble canción.Que pena que Linn no siguiese su propia carrera en solitario,en una entrevista del año 95 dijo que le gustaría dedicarse a la música alternativa,como artista solista o como productora de grupos suecos alternativos.Quién sabe si se dedica a componer y producir a ese tipo de artistas desde el anonimato.
