Please don't be sorry. I have honestly enjoyed this time with you doing detective work and finding the killer. Also, probably some people with this HP model will be happy to have the guidance and a good look at the disassembly. Thank you for sharing Sorin.

''Finding the killer ''? , it was the major , in the billiard room with the candlestick ''. Sorry , silly sense of humour time . I agree, it was a good video and a lesson to everyone , try unplugging things one at at time , cant hurt and might find the culprit quickly . Lucky customer that its on a ribbon and not soldered on . Remove tha faulty one and tel the customer what the fault was , they can have it back while a new one is on order , brilliant

Hello. Many many years ago ( circa 1992 ) I used to use a small independent computer shop. The lesson I learned is to strip all computers from motherboard and try to get to get a boot. Everything attached to the main board can effect a boot sequence because a component could have a short. The post test is trying to protect the main board. When PCs had individual modems and sound cards, they would short out all the time, especially the modem that would suffer from a surge bring down the whole system. Good job. Neal in Atlanta

Sorin, you are to harsh with yourself. It was an excellent example of step be step fault finding, taking note of what you see, asking yourself why that leads you to the fault. It was a very good video, watch every one of them.👏👏

Well haha Sorin ,we actually did not see the keys all working only the enter key .there could still be liquid damage on keys or even other cables. Now i always check EVERY key because of a few i MISSED,i had assumed they all worked ,but i was wrong,a few were gummed up from soda.Now when i take off cables i spray them ALL with the contact cleaner,but only when i see liquid in the system.thanks for the video,Sorin,it simply shows even an expert can miss a small detail.

Hi, youre a genius! I had a Dell 15 laptop that also had water damage from a client that was quoted 500 pounds to replace the motherboard and they coudnt afford it so they asked me to have a look at it.I tried all the normal tricks in the book, nothing worked. I saw your video and thought let me take another look at the laptop even though this is a Dell and yours is a hp laptop. i found the card reader on a small board along with a usb port. Removed the cable and it worked. Cleaned the ribbon cable and connectors, reconnected everything and it works! Thanks so much!

Great video! It was the touch pad with my old HP, the ribbon was damaged and the whole laptop would not start. All the way I was thinking touch pad and damaged ribbon. This is typical HP any related device that does not work kills the whole laptop. My Folio 13 blinks 3 times on the cap lock LED, I suppose this model blinks on the power LED, these are error codes you can lookup. This was not a trivial repair. Very well done!!

Great job, Prof Sorin. I loved your detective work. Few weeks ago, I found that my Toshiba card reader was dusty. I vacuumed it. After seeing your video I am thinking to give it a try and disconnect it. It is not a waste of time for us as we are learning. However, since you are paid based on the jobs you fix, it took away lot of your valuable time. Charge the customer the entire time you spent in your detective work. We the viewers who are here for learning applaud your sense of humor, teaching style, and the method of approaching to diagnose the problem. Keep up the good work, Sir. God bless you!!!

Thank you for the video! I think it is still worth it! Isn’t shorted SD card reader the same as shorted keyboard (I remember you had such a video too)? I mean, both are essentially USB connections going to PCH, which sees that something shorted and it breaks the startup sequence (laptops goes on and off in loops), right? If so, then it can be anything like touchpad, fingerprint sensor, USB extension boards, etc…
@jaimerosariojusticia
@jaimerosariojusticia 2 года назад
The USB controller (in most systems is the south bridge) from the board is what controls the SD Card reader and likely anything that has to do with devices and power (other than then CPU/GPU) in almost every system.

I`ve Repaired many of these.... The problem or mistake you made was when you disconnected the battery and charger you supposed to hold the power button for 10 secs these laptops don`t use a coms battery but it uses a capacitor. That is why the laptop came on after the coms discharged....

one thing I believe if someone brought a device to you for repair and you spend time on it then you deserve something in exchange to your time and effort, you did the checking and you give a working laptop this is what matter and this is fair because they could not use it again without your fix.

For those who dont know, how hdmi connectors look. They have cutouts for a reason probobly cutouts make them more complient and dustproof. And designing perfect light barrier in that case would be waste of time... and top of the line HP would be hp elitebook or zbook not spectre. spectre are designer laptops.
