Episode 226. It was another tough week, but we are closer to Christmas break. Have you tried this wheated bourbon from Heaven Hill? I like it. It is missing a bit of fruit character, but has a lovely mouthfeel with balanced spice and great brown sugar notes. Let me know what you think! #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour

I was surprised at Larcenys appeal for me as well. It's not until I lived with it for a couple weeks that I realized how much I enjoyed it. It's very smooth for It's alcohol content and the bourbon I grabbed for more often. It's just good tasting and easy to drink. Makes me want to steal some. Maybe..

This is pretty much supposed to be the old Old Fitzgerald that was readily available in the 60s-70s. It falls in between the bottom shelf Old Fitzgerald and the decidedly much better Old Fitzgerald BIB that is heavily allocated. Same mash bill

Larceny is the only wheater I enjoy. Great value. I usually drink Rye when im not drinking Scotch or Irish. I started my journey of "sipping" neat with Makers. I used to do shots of Beam and drink pints of Guinness all night. Life is much better in my fifties.

I just bought my first bottle of this last week to try. I found this to be a very nice bourbon. I actually did a blind test with Larceny and Maker's Mark the day I bought it. Larceny won hands down. It's too bad it's priced a little too high for a daily. Larceny mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat and 12% malted barley sitting around 6yrs old. Heaven Hill only picks 200 barrels or less to make a batch. This is a definite buy!

Another Bourbon which I know I can acquire fairly easily. I was going to take either Old Tub or Wild Turkey 101 earlier this week, but we got in some new scotch... and I ended up grabbing a Glenrothes 12. The different packaging and promise of a decent sherried whisky won me over. Oh well :/ I don't know why I hesitate so much to step out of Scotch. I tried a couple of Irish in the form of Bushmills 10 and Connemara. They were decent, yet I felt they lacked a bit of oomph. With Canadian non-mixer, I tried Glen Breton 10. It reminded me of Auchentoshan, but not quite there. And with Bourbon samplers, my best experience was Knob Creek. The problem is that outside of Scotch, our selection for neat drinkable whiskies is quite limited. I think I've been spoiled by those un-chillfiltered, natural coloured and 46% abv scotches(Yes, Ledaig, looking at you !), so I'm always afraid that any other whiskies just won't live up to those standards. What would you suggest for a good Canadian to be drunk neat, for instance ? Larceny does sound interesting, I don't know, between that and Wild Turkey 101, which would give me the best bang for my buck ? Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)
@WhiskyNeighbour
@WhiskyNeighbour 3 года назад
46%, non-chill filtered and natural color Scotch is a delight. No argument from me! This and WT 101 are fairly different bottles. WT has more spice, oak, and an edge of sourness. This is brown sugar, pastry, and a bit of bitterness. I prefer WT, but it is more in your face, so could put off. It might be tough to try either after a sipping Scotch. I find it takes me a couple days to really let go of one style and appreciate another. Sipping Canadian? Anything from Two Brewers is excellent single malt. More traditional would be Ninety 20, or Pike Creek 21. Traditional, affordable, and worth sipping? Very hard to find. I enjoy Gooderham and Worts 4 grain and if you can find it, Dave Keon 14year NHL series.

Larceny was available here in BC last year and I picked up a bottle for about $56.00. What I remember (I polished it off fairly quickly) it was one of those bourbons that had a (nice) peanut taste to it. I quite enjoyed it, but for $56.00 a bottle, it was a bit pricey. In general, we just get fleeced here in Canada when it comes to bourbon.

Hi Jon, suggest to try Makers Mark 46 or MM RC6, it is really solid bourbons. Sad but I still not tryed a big bottle of Larceny, just a sample. Generally outside USA Larceny's price breaks the rooftop, higher than Knob Creek and Woodford, for example.

Thanks for the review John. This is a bourbon we can get in the UK so its interesting to hear your thoughts. Obviously Pappy is THE wheated bourbon to aspire to but I am never going to attain that so, in your experience, which is the wheated bourbon i should try to experience something similar to Pappy? I hope you and your family are safe and well in these uncertain times. Great review, Neighbor Jon - and I always appreciate the comparison whiskies, when you bring them in. My first experience with Larceny was about 7 years ago, and I found it to have an acetone presence, and that bitterness that you mentioned. Would be interesting to revisit after all this time. Did pick up the Barrel Proof version this year that ultimately was awarded Whisky Advocate's #1, and was very surprised by that ranking. It's a fine tasting bourbon, but somewhat thin and with a very short finish (for being barrel proof). Sorry to hear your week was rough. Hopefully you and yours are healthy and doing well. I know the virus seems to be on the rise, but considering seasonality helps me out it in perspective a bit. Hang in there, Jon!
