With my first bottle of Larceny, I noticed that the level in the bottle went down surprisingly fast. I think it's a great value. I recommend it to others very often.
New to all of this and all I know is I generally like dark liquors. Was at the store yesterday and wanted to try something new so I grabbed something random that looked decent but was also cheap. Happened to be Larceny. The store was selling it for 20$ flat. And let me tell ya I’m gonna need to go back to the store and grab another in about a day or two because damn it goes quick.
Larceny is an amazing bourbon. I remember the first time I drank it I got a burst of flavor about 5 minutes after my last sip. Definitely has been the only bourbon in that price range I can say has done that. Glad to see it won
I love the variety in people’s answers. I haven’t had the rebel yell, but I’d rank them makers mark, weller, and larceny last. What happened with me is I always heard people talk about choosing larceny over them all, and I thought it was just okay. I always dismissed regular makers because people never gave it that high of reviews. Turns out it’s my favorite out of the group. So try everything people! Your palate may or may not aline with other people’s. That’s the beauty of this all, it’s all subjective. Best thing to do is buy all 4 of them and do your own blind and see what happens hahaha
Exactly. That's why at the end I always break down the flavors again. Makers may be just what people are looking for. That's what's fun about doing these blind tastings. I've become a huge fan of Makers 46 and i know people that really dislike it.
@@TheMashandDrum Side by side, I like Makers 46 better than regular Makers but both still a couple favorites. Larceny is good also. I've never tried Rebel Yell or Weller. Couple new ones to try. Great review as usual!
I have larceny and while I don't care for it I do not regret buying it in the sense that it makes a good "bridge" between multiple bourbons, should you decide to create a 3+ blend.
I couldn’t disagree more, but like you said it’s all subjective! I’m on the other end of the spectrum... makers is last for me. Good to know your review though, it makes me understand that people taste different things. I won’t be so obtrusive in my future suggestions to friends. Everyone has a different pallet and can like one over the other and that’s something I need to keep in mind, because I have been pretty closed minded lately.
Geez, so I’m looking at a post from four years ago. I cannot believe the increase of price of bourbons. I guess it’s according to what we will pay but yes I remember and it was only four years ago my goodness.
Bang for the Buck in this group goes to REBEL 100 (no more YELLing) with an msrp of $19.95. LARCENY is on sale for close to that, $21-23 frequently. The LARCENY Barrel Proof is stunning.
I think Maker's is a big reason I wasn't inspired to explore bourbon more. Have always been put off by it. I will get me some Larceny now. I hope it differs very much. Thanks
Last week i bought my first bottle of Rebel 100 and i was suprised how good it was. For me it was sweet and had nuts, chocolate, vanilla and oak on the palate and on the aftertaste i could taste a ripe peach taste like 1-2 min after swallow. Really delishious 🙂. Next week i will get one bottle of the Larceny, and i cant wait to try it after this rewiew.
Jason, great blind tasting. Agree MM a bit too sweet and WSR is kinda light and like Larceny the best of those three. Haven't tasted the RY 100. Cheers. I used to love the MM Manhattans but now would go with a "perfect" Manhattan or in an Old Fashioned cut down on the sugar. Or even better for those two cocktails, a nice spicy rye!!
Great comparison. I haven't see the Rebel Yell 100 yet and none of the Wellers are "budget" in my area. I tend to like Larceny more than MM straight. MM does make good mixed drinks though.
I actually prefer the bitter oak on the rebel yell everyone loves larceny i cant get past its distinctive corn note ... i could see where u went most people dont like bitter oak like i do and the mouth feel on the 100 destroys the rest ... this was an awesome review keep it up ..
Yeah I loved the mouthfeel on the RY 100. Yeah that bitterness is something I couldn't get away from. Im hoping other batches will be less bitter but I can see why some like it. Thanks man! Appreciate you watching.
I wish for two things: 1) that I could easily find Weller Special Reserve (or Antique, etc.) and 2) that I could find it anywhere near MSRP. Great video, Larceny is very good, and very good for the price.
So once again, you always put out a great review. Even though this one is from four years ago, it’s still holes true and that is what is amazing. Keep it going from a Astoria New York.🤙
The Larceny and Maker's Mark are readily available to me for $19 each. I like them both about the same, especially at that price point. The Maker's has some sweet stewed fruit notes that I find really pleasant.
As I mentioned in the video makers is dangerously easy to sip. I think it's good but too soft for me. But I like spice and a long finish. A lot of people don't so that's why I like to break down what I'm experiencing. Makers was one of my first intros to bourbon so always holds a special place on my shelf.
Can't stop sipping the Larceny myself. Picked it up because i enjoyed the McKenna so much. Very similar flavor profile. Can't wait to try the barrels proof version
Makers mark is my daily drinker. I'm in the UK and these other wheated bourbons are a lot more expensive. I can't even find weller here. Makers is only £25. I agree it's not amazing but it's sweet easy to drink and good value. I think it's hard to beat for the value I've tried lots of different bourbons around that price. The only others that compare on value are wild turkey 101 and four roses small batch which are around the same price.
i bought my first bottle of larceny tonight and now iam slipping along with you. iam glad larceny was your first choice. ive bought markers before but always found it to taste a little weak . i really like your intro music. iam watching you from canada and always watch you when i buy a new bottle
For the price point, availability and the characteristics of the bourbon, Larceny is always on my cart. I am somewhat suprised it beat Pappy Lite, but, I couldn't agree more with the analysis of the qualities of this bourbon.
Great episode Jason. I'm a fan of these blind mash ups and an excellent name for the series. Not surprised by last place or 1st place probly would have been my choices as well! A good wheated bourbon is a thing of beauty
Makers Mark and Larceny are 2 of my favorites. I have a bottle of each right now in fact. Wish I ever saw Weller in any store here, I'd love to try it, but you just never find it at retail and the prices on the secondary market are insane for what is a sub-$30 retail bottle.
To be honest, I don't mind not seeing it. It's worth its MSRP at best. The hype is just not backed up by the product. I saw it at a liquor store last week for $150 and had a hard time not convulsing in laughter. I'm not a huge Larceny fan, but I would honestly take a pour of that over Weller SR. YMMV. Cheers.
Larceny > Rebel Yell 100 > Maker's Mark > Weller I've had all of the Wellers on multiple occasions and haven't liked any of them. I find them harsh, astringent. On the other hand, I absolutely love Larceny and Rebel Yell.
Now I know why I recognize you! You took me for $50 in NYC. The way you moved those glasses around you haven’t lost your touch with the old shell game😂😂🤣 Thanks for your reviews👏🏻👏🏻👍🥃🥃
Rebecca Paige McKenzie’s bottled in bond is a wheated Bourbon. If you haven’t had it, keep it in mind. In some areas it’s mid $40’s in my area I’ve found it in the mid $50’s.Cheers! 🥃
Great wheated blond fight! I like all of these but haven't seen the Rebel Yell 100 yet but love the 10. Great flavor and aroma breakdowns of the botlled, cheers Jason!
Can’t find Weller, but that’s okay. The Larceny Small batch rocks! Larceny is my favorite wheated bourbon, while Old Elk Straight Wheat (95% wheat 5% barley mash bill) is good stuff, too.
@@richardcalderon5891 if you’re talking about Weller, I’m not paying $100 a bottle for the Special Reserve. I found a bottle and paid $30 for it. It’s good, but not $100 a pop for it...
Great video! I don't have that Rebel Yell, but I have the other 3. May have to do a comparison soon! I do really love Larceny and Weller SR. Makers classic has always been one I like for mixing, personally. But I fricking love their Private Select series.
I'm your new subscriber, buddy and very much like your style of presenting liquors in the form of tests) Keep going on! Best regards from Moscow, cheers!)
I have been following Mash and Drum for around a year and this popped up as an older episode. I really enjoy this channel. I like Weller then Makers followed by Larceny the Rebel but for the value Rebel hard to beat. But Makers for quality and availability is the winner to me. Anything BYAC is almost impossible to find in area I live in. Like finding Big Foot! Jason keep up the great work!!
It really is but it just amps up that wheat and fruit sweetness. I really like it but I think its a try before you buy situation. Be glad to send ya a sample.
Personally I like the 101 better. But the cask strength is a semi close second. The normal MM is just not up to par for me. Makes a great mixer if you want to drink it with coke or something.
I personally enjoy watching blinds better when in post, the reviewer fonts the whiskey at the bottom. This way I know what you're talking about when you say it. I'm never taking notes on what the person says when he's talking about No. 2 and I certainly don't remember what you said at the beginning of a long video so the detail kinda gets wasted. I usually just skip to the end to see the order and the wrap up because of it. Just me...
@@TheMashandDrum thanks for getting back. I enjoy your content and watch often and join live streams. At least worth considering as I could be just me but you give so much great detail in the moment I'd love to know (before you do - in theory) what you're describing. Either way dude, I'm a fan. Keep killing it! 🥃 Cheers.
Great rundown Jason and some real good comments below that I agree with - it always comes down to personal palate preference. You do a great job of letting us know what we might expect so we can weed down the options before spending beaucoup bucks on numerous bottles. Thanks again and Cheers! 🥃
Great lineup for some heated whiskies!! I still have to try that rebel yell. I wish there were more selections for wheated bourbons. Great stuff buddy! Cheers
I'm still pretty new to whiskey and just don't get how people can get so many different flavors from both nosing and tasting it. I can tell the difference in spice, smoothness, and sweetness, but that's it. Guess I have to keep buying more whiskey to practice with!
Lol. I thought the same when I first started. What I did is focus on one brand of a Distillery for a little while. Just try and familiarize yourself with that brand as much as possible. Once you feel like you know that brand really well...insert a new distillery brand in the mix and the differences will start coming to light. Even if you can't describe the differences you will be able to taste them.
@@TheMashandDrum Thanks so much! I appreciate the encouragement. Luckily, I've got some good friends who have gotten me into whiskey, so it will be fun trying new things with them and improving our skills at this. Love the channel.
@@bbostic_5 that's awesome! I'm still learning and taste is subjective. Memory and familiarizing yourself with different flavor profiles will definitely help! Keep sipping!
A few months ago I bought 2 gift sets of larceny (I think a hold over from 2019 christmas) and I found it very harsh and strongly flavored. I guess I am used to harsh non wheated bourbons (I like harsh like old crow, evan williams black, devils river 90 proof, LTD etc). I loved the rocks glasses and the him flask and use it for everything now from whiskey to coffee to water.
You and I need to sit down and drink together... I feel like you have the exact same pallet as I do, I have already done a similar comparison and you nailed it! Larceny won for me as well.... I did however have the 10 year in addition to the rest and that came in above the Weller special reserve in the test. I feel for a budget bourbon though the larceny is hard to beat. Once again very well done and for me at least couldn’t agree more. Can’t wait to see if you get some BTAC labels what you think of them because like I said we have a similar palate so I want to see what you think of the new releases. I’m guessing WLW will win it all like last year.
Amazing series these once again, Jason, and as a plus, I had to choose recently to get me a wheated Bourbon & based on my unique tasting memory plus feedback here & there (mainly your channel & Liquorhound-I have to say probably my 2 favorite US whiskeys mainly oriented YT channels) and I picked Larceny (coming here in France around 50 €, but 100 cl). So I'm glad it's the first here, knowing your demanding palate....and will probably open it soon. Cheers, mate & congrats for another great review with nice informative edited inserts !
As I try to become a more discerning bourbon drinker, I subbed here. At this point I don’t have the palette or vocabulary to taste or describe the complexities. I know this isn’t a q&a opportunity, but why is Jack Daniel’s never mentioned?. I just got a bottle of JD single barrel and even with my lack of sophistication, I can say it’s a vast improvement over the No. 7 I’ve had gallons of over the years ( I’m almost 74).. I doubt I’ll ever have an opportunity to sample some of those four figure bottles. i feel I’ll have risen to a higher level when I can taste notes of caramel and toasted almond.
I agree with you..Ive done a few reviews on the JD single barrels and Im in love with the JD SB Barrel Proof. When it comes to Jack some purists tend to get crazy saying its bourbon or not bourbon. Its always an argument. But obverall Jack is putting out some fantastic whiskey!
Nice mash up Jason. Would you say the berry ish strawberry type flavor is similar to the blantons type berry flavor? On blantons I get a strawberry type hint.
How do you guys judge anything after the first drink? After that they all kinda taste a lot sweeter. That vanilla/caramel/golden syrup thing. Maybe it’s different if you don’t swallow. Haha, that’s what she said, before somebody says it.
Lol. For me the first sip is the shock. And then the rest of the sips I look for different flavors and see if they stay consistent or if it falls off. And yes....that's what she said. Lol
Larceny is one of the worst tasking wheaters I have ever had. That aftertaste along with most other HH products reminds me of when you accidentally swallow an insect. Not a fan haha.
Weller special is my personal favorite, i can get a bottle for 22 bucks, then makers, rebell yell. Last is larceny, i dont care for it. I get black licorice in it, i don't like that flavor at all.
That's really interesting. I was getting the black licorice on makers. I really wanted to do this tasting to see what everyone's experienced were. Weller is definitely the most well rounded. I like the proof on the larceny. But I can see choosing Weller any day of the week. Cheers.
