I love the idea of shooting animals on 4x5... but will they keep still??
This is another instalment of my series on local businesses, this time I'm visiting the lovely Jenny of Wren Birds of Prey - www.thewren.info
Wren offer photography days, and if I wasn't being an idiot and attempting to shoot on 4x5, then I think it would be crazy rewarding. Some of Jenny's birds are just mesmerising... those eyes!!
However, I have to go and try to do it on 4x5. Unsurprisingly, focus was challenging. The beautiful birds have a tendency to move you see. And I couldn't close the iris down to give myself a fighting chance, because I would have had to slow the shutter down so much that I would be facing the alternative problem, that of motion blur.
Aaaaanyway, some of them came out ok. I'm happy with the results. And I'm super happy with that 65mm lens! I just love that angle of view. Makes such a hug difference. And gets me away from those bloody 50mm equivalent focal lengths, with which my issues persist.
Let me know your thoughts!

The colour worked better for me on the owls, those eyes deserve it.

I know right? Those eyes are crazy! If only colour 4x5 sheets didn't cost so much!

It's cool to see someone actually using a Stenopeika out in the field. I almost bought their 8x10 last year but was concerned about the base rails that look a little too much like those from a kitchen drawer rather than proper, sturdy rails. So my perceptions might be wrong about the build quality.
@the120ist
@the120ist Год назад
The base rails are definitely sturdy. I’ll be posting a video very soon with the Stenopeika, at the end of which I drop it from quite a height. It hit the ground with a sickening crunch, and it took pretty heavy damage. It had a 210mm on at the time, a fairly heavy lens, which amazingly came away unscathed. The uprights on the front standard bent out of shape, the base bracket holding the uprights buckled so far I couldn’t bend it back, and the sliders holding the lens board ripped from the front standard. But the base, the rails, didn’t flinch. Straight as an arrow. Samuele had replacement parts for the bent bits with me less than a week later, and I’m back out taking photos with it, albeit still with some war wounds that make it mine. Build quality is not something to worry about here! Nor after sales service!!

The owls are just as amazing as Jenny and your skills. Those where really nice shoots, when I heard your intro I thought "so now he really went nuts". Taking a 4x5 to take pictures of birds. I am really impressed. Thanks for sharing the video.

Thank you! But I think it could have gone better. Not sure what I would do differently, apart from maybe taking a little more time. But it’s always difficult when you have a subject and you don’t want to waste their time. I don’t know, maybe I should stop doing stupid shoots, and stick to still life photographs… naaah!

Woah 65mm, I have the Nikor 75mm and it is already pretty wide (though admittedly yesterday was the first time I actually got to use it for bellows related reason). Super loved those owls, magnificent birds, your photos and videos of the sanctuary. That was very nice!

Not the most intuitive set up! but I do love doing close up portraits with wide angle lenses, especially when there's two or more subjects. I quite liked the results. I've used the 65mm a lot more since, and with the experience I have of it, I could do a better of those shots now. But I was happy enough with the results. What did you think?

@@the120ist The last time I had to take similar photos was in 2016 when I had to shoot a bird handler and her bald eagle. I carried the following Nikon lenses with an APS-C SLR body: 28-70mm f/2.8 auto focus 80-200mm f/2.8 auto focus 400mm f/5.6 I primarily used the 80-200 mounted on a monopod with a ball head to capture high quality images similar to yours. However, if I had been using my 65mm on my 4x5, I never would have been able to capture those images. I think you did a phenomenal job.

Great effort! And quite the challenge to film on LF. Really like the first few frames especially. Would have been nice to have the handler look at the camera for a few frames, too!
@the120ist
@the120ist Год назад
The handler not looking at the camera was all to do with my confidence in the photos I was taking! I wasn't sure which ones would come out so I basically kept trying for the same shot, hoping that I'd get one good one out of all of them! If i did it again I would definitely mix it up a bit.

Very nice shoot. Touching. Hey, it’d be more to hear how you feel about the Air Force after some use. I’m newish to LF, have a Linhoff Technika IV. It’s fine, but heavy heavy. I’m not sure I’m in love with it, but am still wanting to keep giving LF a try and am considering the Air Force.
@the120ist
@the120ist Год назад
I'm a big fan of the Air Force. I had a bit Toyo monorail, and that was awesome, but totally not portable. Then I got an Intrepid, and that's great, total opposite of the monorail, super lightweight, but a little limited. Then the Air Force, and I think this camera will do me for a good long while. More than enough movements to keep you going, lightweight and super portable, but just feels a little more grown up and refined that the intrepid. Plus it looks great... like that should influence us!

at 10:17 you could have 'double exposed' this shot, and purched the bird on each window, making it symmetrical!, it would yield a nice effect.
@the120ist
@the120ist 11 месяцев назад
Nice idea! Did not occur to me at the time. Nor since actually, until you just mentioned it! I haven't really done any double exposures. Definitely something to do some testing with.

a great wide lens, but as mat marrash says always watch the bellows extension, as with the wides, these can creep up on you fast (if you get approx. 2x the focal length away you need to compensate for the light lost); without you realising it, as 65 mm is 7cm close enough, so is very short, so getting to 14 cm (2x) is not that noticeable in comparison to the tele lenses, the difference between 210 and 420 IS noticeable though, so no mistaking need for bellows factor there!!
@the120ist
@the120ist 11 месяцев назад
Good advice. And to be honest, while shooting with the 65mm I don't think I considered bellows extension once! I think about it when I've got a 300 or a 360 attached, of course, but you're absolutely right that it should always factor into the calculations, even with a super wide.
@andyvan5692
@andyvan5692 3 месяца назад
@@the120ist Yes, and also be WARY of getting too close!, as with wides they distort close objects, like faces if shot at near min focus distance, at least what is said for 135 format lenses! ; so a Good and prudent move having the 210 ( a long lens, macro capable) with you; so if you need to get in close you can, without fear of facial distortion.
@andyvan5692
@andyvan5692 3 месяца назад
@@the120ist yes, one other issue with the 65 is, that converted to 135 its roughly 21mm focal length, almost in the "Ultra wide", or fisheye category, and it is ok, and quite acceptable not to think about bellows ext. as normally (a helicoid focus lens) this Cant happen, physically impossible, at least without bellows or ext. tubes/ teleconvertor attached, and then we ALWAYS apply the factor so exposure is correct.

Ty for bringing us along! I noticed you didn’t seem to have any filters on the 65mm. Do you ever use a center filter or have tried it with one? A lot of people claim illumination drops off on the corners
@the120ist
@the120ist Год назад
I wasn't noticing much corner drop off on the lens. I definitely notice it on the ground glass, it's almost impossible to view the whole image at once, even with a fresnel. I haven't used filters at all with the 65mm yet.... but I am in fact heading out tomorrow with the 65mm and some filters. Video coming soon!

@@the120ist Good to know ty! I just did some shooting today with it and had the exact same experience. I figured not to bother with a fresnel, and I didnt use any filters either, but had a great time still and no trouble, so I'll definitely lyk how they came out.
