Finally, I shot a landscape image that I'm actually happy with!
If you've been watching this channel for a while, you'll know about my personal battle with landscape photography - I love doing it, but I am almost never happy with the results. Welp, I finally did it. I got an image which I'm genuinely proud of. Worthy of printing and worthy of even framing perhaps! Do you agree?
I was using the Stenpeika Air Force 4x5 for this shoot, along with my 65mm Nikkor SW lens, and then the shot that I love was taken with a Busch Rapid Aplanat No. 2. Not too sure of the focal length, it doesn't say it on it, but it's f8 at its widest, and looks to be about 8.5 inch or so. A glorious lens... I'm looking forward to trying out some portraits with this one.
And then the end of the video... where I smashed my beautiful camera. I was walking with it on the tripod, the tripod over my shoulder, not horizontal or anywhere near it, but at a slight angle. And my ball head gave way, the camera fell and hit the ground. Total devastated. Camera smashed to bits.
Since making this vid I have actually managed, with the help of the amazing Samuele from Stenopeika, to completely repair the camera. It's back up and running, and ready to come out with me again. I'm so relieved.
Right, on to the next SA vid, which will be coming soon. Will be a 120 vid, not sure which one yet, you'll have to wait and see!

What a bugger about the Stenopaeka; thank the ghods of small mercies it was at end of day/trip tho. For wildlife 4x5 you need a Speedgrafics, with a grafmatic fast changer 😉 Look forward to more adventures soon

I know, I was devastated at the end of that trip. Now... I actually read your comment about needing a SpeedGraphic for wildlife a few days ago, coincidentally while I was out shooting a video on shooting wildlife on LF, and doing exactly the opposite of what you suggest!!! I have yet to see the results.... watch this space!

Thanks Paul! Chuffed with the tree shot. It's literally the first time I've come back from a landscape shoot and been really happy with the results! But yeah, bummer about the camera. I was gutted!

Thanks! I know, I was devastated when that camera hit the floor. The crunch sound still echoes around my nightmares...

Enjoyed the video…but heartbreaking camera damage…yikes. I have a question - how did you get your 4x5 film through the airport screening? I’m headed to Italy in a couple of weeks with my S2A. Flying out of Atlanta. My original plan was to ship the film ahead of time and ship it back before I leave. But it appears that the US Postal Service employs the same CT scanners as airports. So I’m just going to take a chance and carry the film with me, ask for a hand check, and keep my fingers crossed.

I took the chance and just went for it. The sheets, in their boxes, we’re in my hand luggage on the way out, but they went through the scanners. Then on the way back I left the exposed sheets in the film holders… I figured the metal dark slides would give the sheets some protection. They all came back fine, as far as I can tell. That sheet that had the watermarks on it also had a huge light leak, and I can’t immediately account for that. Could be the scanners, who knows. In general though, I’ve traveled a lot with film, and I’ve grown tired of arguing with every TSA / security agent at every scanner. I just let them go through now and I’ve never seen any noticeable difference.

One question: DO they have UMBRELLAS in S Africa?????????????
@the120ist
@the120ist Год назад
They may have... but will I use one? Hell no! Actually, I would use one of course, but the important thing here is that it wasn't raining that day! Plus where would be the fun in that?
