I take drastic measures to improve the look of this 30+ year old jade plant. I walk thru my thought process on how i prune. It also gives me a lot of large cuttings to make more jade plants from. Update video to come in a few months.

I would be crying so many tears if I had to chop up my jade plants. You are o brave. I have about five jade plants. I cannot wait for them to become large and bushy.

Yes, it really is a big commitment, not only to do the pruning but to also say im in this for the long haul because it will take years to get the end result. Sadly i have to sell a large portion of my collection though.

Nice prune job. Make sure you do an update video in a couple months of new growth. I love how resilient these plants are.

WHOA!!! Wasn't expecting you to prune your 30 yr old Jade plant that drastic, so I definitely want to see how this plant puts out new growth. I have a Jade plant that is the same size only it's much fuller, and seems to be heavier on one side, which I think is making the main trunk bend, so I'm going to prune that side to see if I can lighten the load. Plus it'll give me more Jade plants to grow. Nice job! Thanks for the instruction...exactly what I needed to know.

Yes i wanted to get it to be more full so i am pruning. The reason it looks kind of bare is because i separated this from a much larger plant. Imagine 6 more of these bunched together. I did not want a bush so i separated them n want to prune it to make it look like a miniature tree. I made the mistake of not repotting right away n did not wait til the soil was completely dry prior to pruning. This cause soil to stay wet for too long. There was no leaves to persperate the moisture. So some of the roots rotted. I caught it in time n the plant is healthy now but it was set back a bit. Been experimenting different types of soil also.

Wow. Didnt think it was gonna be pruned back that much! Will try to find any updates of that one. Wish you would have explained why you cut it back so far.

I will be posting another update soon. The reason i pruned it back that far was for asthetics. I wanted to keep it under control and have more ramifications in the branches. I felt the branches were too lanky. Stay tuned!!

What happens if I cut on the node instead of in between two of the nodes?
@Horticulture_Warrior
@Horticulture_Warrior 4 года назад
If you cut on the node it may damage the node and nothing grows out of it. Instead the new growth goes to the node just below it. You may get a stub that doesnt fall off on its own. The only drawback is if you were hoping for that specific length to the branch. It will be 1 node shorter instead and it may not look as pleasing. I will be sure to show examples on my update video. When pruned properly the piece of the internode that is left dries up and falls off leaving a soft scar behind. As the branches grow thicker it eventually elimanates this scar and blends in with the 2 new branches.

My question is, although Jade plants grow and recover faster in the spring and summer after a pruning, if it’s an indoor jade plant will it still recover from a pruning just as equally, any time of the year?
@Horticulture_Warrior
@Horticulture_Warrior 2 года назад
Yes. The reason they recover faster in spring and summer is because they are actively growing and putting out new foliage. If its an indoor plant and is always actively growing it will recovery more quickly but will still be slower than if it were outdoors in the summer. The more vigorous the growth, the faster the recovery.

I just done a similar prune on a very neglected jade plant, I also reported at the same time. Will the plant cope with both at the same time?
@Horticulture_Warrior
@Horticulture_Warrior 3 года назад
Yes absolutely. Remember when you do cuttings the plant has no roots and can make a full recovery. Even some root pruning is good for the plant when doing a hard top prune so repotting is no issue and if you changed to better soil the plant will recovery faster and will be in a much better situation so good job!

Of all the pruning videos I have seen. This is the closest to what I need to do. I thought doing something like this to the plant would kill it.
@Horticulture_Warrior
@Horticulture_Warrior 2 года назад
They are extremely resilient plants and can handle anything you can throw at them. Remember these can grow whole plants from just a single leaf! Best of luck to you my friend. Im sure it will turn out great!

@@Horticulture_Warrior Your video gave me the confidence to split my plant in half and keeping the better looking half. On that half, I pruned everything except a small amount of leaves. I had to leave the plant a small source of energy. As a first time pruner, I can say I am very satisfied with the result. I used a hammer and chisel to split the plant below soil. Trying to dig at the root was impossible because of the dense root mat and wet-mud-like soil - the plant was out in the rain while I was evicting the fungus gnats. The cut was surprisingly clean from a dull chisel. I did get splattered by quite a bit of plant "sap", though. Good job warrior guy!

We have a 50 YEAR old Jade it is HUGE can we cut it back a lot like this to get it to go again or should we repot it first? It is looking sickly the leaves are shrinking,
@Horticulture_Warrior
@Horticulture_Warrior 3 года назад
Hi Linda! Thanks for watching and that is a great question. Has it been repotted before? If i were you i would do both. The plant will benefit from a repotting if it has never been repotted. When repotting you are bound (no pun intended) to be rootbound and will lose roots when you rake out the roots. This is good and perfectly fine. This will promote new root growth. Also when you prune roots it is good to balance out the top by pruning foliage and branches and vise versa. With new potting mix and fertilizer the plant will bounce back very quick. I have people with concerns if this thing will survive and they tell me i am killing it. Well you can take a jade branch with no roots and no leaves and get it to root and grow so why would a plant with roots not make it? Thats what i love about them. They are extremely resilient. And if you are scared to do this too often just remember regular smaller prune jobs will be easier on you and the plant.
