He's so humble. Larry can play the most advanced fusion - point it up - strikes twice - ect. He can play ANY bebop jazz, or he can get simple and still sound awesome. He's my favorite. In my book, the best guitarist in history.
Yep, an essential element. Mr Carlton would be the first to admit that it's the musicians he plays with that make him sound good! :) What I like about this tune and indeed a lot of Larry's playing is that he merges jazz and more popular elements so seamlessly. A master, truly!
I never get tired of this song..studio..live..The Dan..Larry🙌..On this particular Crossroads version that Fender Rhodes just releases the dopamine endorphins
I was there. Hot August Texas day. About 1:00PM. That was LC's Sapphire Blue band. They kicked off with Friday Night Shuffle and electrified the place.
A lot of people in the audience thinking, I know that song, that’s Steely Dan. Larry played with Dan? He did a lot of their best studio stuff. Larry was also great with Fourplay.
There are 19 different chords in this piece. And you are correct man, what an arrangement. A pleasure to hear. And these gents do it so well. GREAT musicians, especially Mr. 335.
I strongly advise you to check all Steely Dan repertoire, Larry Carlton was quite involved in the project, such as many other great musicians (Knopfler, Wayne Shorter, Steeve Gadd, Bernard Purdie....). Beautiful music, amazing arrangements
@mariopenati9489 Will be studied for years in the future. Simply amazing the product that came out of the Steely Dan projects. All musicians that played with Donald and Walter can be complimented for their contributions. I know they must have been intimidated by the brilliance of these compositions and under their tutalage propelled their careers. Imagine being only 21 years old and playing with these legendary musicians. Steve Gad was a great example of being a chosen one
Unbelievable! I once asked the band leader from a SD cover band, "How you going to pull it off with no horns?" Now this guy comes along and pulls it off without vocals!
One day, DF will be seen to be the George Gershwin of his generation. And when that day comes I'll put some Remy in my snifter and toast him to the sky, and whisper "Rock on, Donald..."
Yeah. No shit. Unbelievable. That drummer was one of the best I've ever heard in 60 years of listening to jazz. That guy is on TOP of this. Man, if I was putting together a band, I'd hunt him down and hire him. WOW!
I wish the DONALD FAGEN, WALTER BECKER, LARRY CARLTON, MICHEAL MCDONALD, & TIM SCHMIT would unit for a concert together as STEELY DAN. With LARRY & WALTER on guitars, DONALD & MIKE on keyboards, TIM on bass guitar, TIM & MIKE on harmony vocal, a horn section and drummer, they could make this song and others sound like the studio version and recapture the true magic they had. Of course, TIM, MIKE, & WALTER could take a turn on lead vocal.
And Jeff Baxter. It was him who raised our interest here in Finland 45 years ago. It took over thirty years to see them here . Why Schmidt? Becker started as a bass player. The original drummer is dead and Dias... his own exercise is not too mesmerizing
@@tapiomakelainen Yeah, I just can't see Timmy as bassist for that lineup. Unless it would be more of a collaboration of "artists who really like each other." It needs an understated yet dirty-punching bass. I always liked Blood Sweat and Tears bassist Jim Fielder--lordie that dude could bring it!
Looks like Bob Francescini. What a great sound and interpretation of SDs vocal line.Difficulty imagine anyone playing it better.Sound, vibrato, feel, phrasing right on the money.
Ahh! The Colton Bowl? So, did they add another stadium in Dallas since I left? Back in the old days, we only had the Cotton Bowl. How things change. Ha!
He sounds good for this live gig but the great Jim Keltner played the original track. He is a great groove drummer and played the perfect funky pocket on the album version that we all love..
Santana is a virtuoso who is very lyrical with a lot o feeling mc might be better but opposite cooler temperment player plus they connected on spiral level in early 70s
I loves me some Larry Carlton...but...the tune that he suggested that he played was actually the performance of guitarist/bassist/composer Walter Becker R.I.P.
if youre talking about what is "flying" on the wings of the stage thats called a line array. many different brands out there. check out Meyer, and L Acoustics for starters.
I just watched an interview with Dean Parks, who said that he played most of the parts on this song. Walter played the gtr solo and Larry only played a minor role. One of the is lying.
I think it's Bob Francescini.Brandon's a knockout player too.Bob's feel, phrasing, vibrato timing etc etc ...perfection. ( btw I'm Alan Breen - My friend Campbell Smith's the previous owner).
I hear those first four bars and suddenly I can't help singing out loud and out of tune..."we're going to break out the hats at Moodys (that's how I've always heard that line lol) when Josie comes home we're gonna rev up the motor scooters when Josie comes home to stay we're gonna park in the street, sleep on the beach and make it ..." and driving my wife and daughter crazy.
