When Larry Carlton graciously invited Premier Guitar to visit his Nashville studio, we jumped at the chance. He played guitar, told stories, and pretty much proved he's the coolest person any of us will ever meet.
"I'm not a collector," Carlton explains, "I just have a few guitars I like to play." For someone who has tracked as many sessions as Carlton, three Gibsons, two Fenders, and two Valley Arts 6-strings might seem like a modest number, but each one is very special.
The belle of the ball is Carlton's #1, a 1969 Gibson ES-335 he purchased new in '69. This is the guitar that earned him the “Mr. 335” moniker. It has seen a few changes over time, including Schaller tuners, a graphite nut, a KTS titanium bridge, and several re-fret jobs.
A fan gave Carlton his second ES-335, which is a 1968 model. Its pickups were swapped out for a matched pair of 1961 Gibson PAFs.
Next in the Gibson family is a stock 1955 Les Paul Special in TV yellow.
Carlton covers the Fender sound with his 1954 Fender Telecaster and his 1962 Fender Stratocaster. Both are completely stock and utterly beautiful.The only modern-ish guitars are a custom Valley Arts T-style and a Valley Arts small body acoustic. The latter resembles a Martin 000, but features a different soundboard bracing pattern.

@@giovanna722 I'd call that more of a series of fills rather than a true solo. It's just so laid back, like the whole song. "I'm too wasted to have the energy for a real solo" is the whole attitude of the song.

I started listening and following Larry Carlton when I was in my teens. He is probably the biggest influence in my playing. Have been a huge fan over his entire career.

Interviewer John was great, asked all the right questions, things we wanted to know, properly respectful of a legend. Wonderful to see Larry talk, all comfortable and relaxed, in his home turf. One of the best rig rundowns I've seen.

I know this is a older video but after viewing I felt compelled to comment on it. I've played guitar since I was 12 and always played since. I'm now 59. I love all music that has great guitar regardless of style, anything from AC/DC to Steely Dan, and I've listened to all of it all my life to date. Having said that, one of my all time favorite guitarist is Larry Carlton because of his tone, creativity, great songs, his contributions to music in general, etc. Now back to this video. It was one the best artist gear type videos I've ever seen. The video quality itself is great, the details of all aspects of the gear, little stories provided by Mr 335, the guitar tech providing technical details of Mr Carlton's setup preferences, wow. I tip my hat to all involved in project. Thank you.

He's truly one of the nicest people I've met. I had a chance to sit down and trade licks with him when I was 19 yrs old. He was so cool. Even invited me to his gig! He is also one of the most musical guitarists. Larry is a true Musician.

Yeah I think so too ! And I still wondering what the hell the Guy who shot him possessed ?? I'm very happy he survived the whole ordeal ! In the past I have allways thought there are A lot of disturbing people walking around the States but lately the amount of shootings in my country is raised to alarming numbers,I can remember that when I was just 13 years old that in the Netherlands only One person per year was killed well that's just a faint memory

Best Rig Rundown interview ever. I know this is about gear, etc., but Larry seems to be one of the kindest, most sincere caring people that has ever been featured by Premier Guitar. Well, unlike with Kiss where you'll need to buy a $2500 special ticket to have a meet'n'greet with band members, you're very likely to have met Larry if you intended one of his gigs... Actually, it's the case for most of artists in the jazz/fusion/blues/folk scenes: they mainly play in clubs and small venues, there is no "wall" between them and the public... They don't see themselves as "stars", "divas" or some kind of supernatural beings. If s.o. like Larry has to hire bodyguards, it's not for himself but because of insurance request as he moves with now extremely expensive vintage guitars. Had I owned a 335 (I'm not very into corporate or "vintage" guitars, near all my stuff comes from artisans or small companies), his autograph would be on my guitar now instead of one of his albums ;-) If you intend one of his gigs, don't leave the venue as soon as the gig end, you'll soon discover that Larry is truly as cool and nice you felt watching this video ;-)

Wow, Larry Carlton. You were/are such an inspiration to me and my peers. "Point It Up" was a improvisational masterpiece as were so many of your songs. Your feel is unpresidented and the way you work with your tones is incredible. Your soloing lives within the guitar. You become one with timeings. You were shredding before we had a word for it. Great guitarist of these times are great because of you. Thank you Larry Carlton.

Oh my god, fan-boying hard on this one. "You know, when I was touring with Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham..." Damn! The axes are stunning. What they were used to play is among the pantheon of greatest music. And Larry is an all around great, humble guy through it all.

I saw Larry at the Baked Potato up close on the front table and was blown away with his playing. I went back the following night to watch him again and Paulino Da Costa was behind me which I was not aware till he introduced him and he ended up jamming with him.

I recently bought an 81 ARIA Pro II TA 100 es 335 from an estate sale. When I got home I went through the case and found a napkin from an old club from the 80’s with Larry’s autograph on it. The coolest part was I bought the guitar because of Larry’s use of his Gibson 335. It made the whole deal that much cooler.

Larry has been my favorite electric guitarist for many years. I love my 2005 Gibson ES-335 Larry Carlton model, too. It's in mint condition and one of the best electric guitars I own.

The first time I plugged a 335 into my rig, I was stunned how much different it sounded than my other Gibsons. That guitar is now my #1 - I had to go back to the drawing board with overdrives, compression and especially tweaking the bass EQ throughout the signal chain. Worth the hassle though - I swear all my guitars sound better now.

John I've seen a couple of your interviews, and I want to thank you for doing a great job!!! In the 70's, I used to see Larry all the time playing at Dante's, and The Baked Potato... I remember when both he, and Robin Ford were using those early Mesa Boogie Amps. Great times! Why did Larry stop using the Dumble Amps? Thanks again!

I am absolutely unafraid to say,, Larry Carlton is THE most unique guitarist of all time! Ask yourselves,, who else even sounds close to his style and technique?? The closest person would be Robben Ford, but he has a bolder, less warm tone and technique,, which is what everyone loves about Larry's playing. Larry delivers the shivers,, he plays FROM the heart,, TOO the heart. Also, Larry is an excellent composer/arranger, and his list of television show theme songs is as long as your arm! From blues, to bebop, to fusion and jazz,, he is a master at them all!

I don't know if anybody cought this but, Larry said that the es-335 originally came with a trapeze, and was replaced with a full stop. That means that the guitar was a hollow body. My question is, how is the full stop being supported? When Gibson sells its semi-hollow bodies their is a block of wood that supports the full stop!

All Gibson es-335’s are semi-hollow body guitars. There is a maple block running from top down of the body. The wings of the guitar is hollow.
