Larry has the vibe of a zen master holding a blood stained axe - he’s simultaneously calming and terrifying on guitar. I’m picturing Wong and Lettieri practicing extra for this session, feeling nervous, and totally at ease after 5 min in the room.
And yet, Larry WOULD NOT HAVE DONE this project/interview if he didn't see something in the skillsets of Wong and Littieri, and the musical opportunity presented. I once saw Larry interviewed at a Sweetwater Gearfest where he didn't even pick up a guitar.
So... what about Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, George Benson, Zachary Breaux - these comments... Don´t get me wrong, Larry is a g.o.a.t. with his ability to outline a melody from a chord change - unparalleled but there are other players who did the same in THEIR way.
@@thmsrttg It's almost as if it's creating a new path to walk on. For me that song hits very HARD. You definitely wouldn't want to hit your head on it.
This video and Rick Beato's interview of Bernard Purdie got me weirdly emotional. I'm only 26 but, to me, Carlton and Purdie embody musical excellence. The fact that we're able to get to know such musical titans through these videos for free is an absolute privilege!
I'd have to add (drummer) Narada Michael Waldon to that - he's also in his 70s and has such an amazing resume and great stories to tell. Him talking with Jack Conte and Ryan Lerman was fascinating.
I'm so appreciative of the humor and production value that goes into these. Larry Carlton on a twig as viewed through binoculars was unbridled genius. This entire video was beyond great.
Best part? The pure joy on Cory;s face "I'm up here on stage trading licks with _Larry Carlton,_ one of the masters I listened to when I was learning to play guitar! It doesn't get any better than this!"
Cory himself is Mister Covert Chops! He rarely seems to play anything more than "Dinga-Dinga-Dinga-Dinga-Dinga-Dinga-Dinga..........", but he plays that PERFECTLY, which ain't easy. And when he does something more, or solos, it's clear just how much guitar he can pull out if the song requires it. In that he reminds me of Walter Becker - who mostly just chunked rhythm, played the occasional bluesy, economical lead, and tried to look as dyspeptic as Donald Fagen does. Of course, Walter could never sound as dyspeptic as Donald does, no one can.
I will say it again and everyday for the rest of my life... Cory Wong is a national treasure and we need to protect this man and his band from any harm!
Thanks to Cory. No better way to honor someone like Larry Carlton than the interview you gave. Being a musician who has followed Larry since the early 1980's I know Larry was honored by your words. Brought tears to my eyes. Cory keep being you man.
I found Cory's music recently and it really arrived in good time. I'm feeling very sad lately, due to work, relationships and the fact I'm getting deaf. I feel abandoned in every way but I pretend to be strong even though I'm losing the battle. But with Cory's music, I feel really happy, I feel like I can do anything, it's like the sunshine is everlasting. I would like to thank Cory for making such an amazing music, it really helps me to get through all this shit, so I'll listen to this amazing music as long as I can. Thanks Cory, God bless you and your whole band and guests.
Are you kidding me?!?!? My two newest favorite guitarists (Cory & Mark) chilling, talking music, and jamming with Larry Carlton - an old favorite, and true master of his art. Great stuff. This made my day. I've been playing almost 45 years, I loved seeing the new generation melding flawlessly with the older.
@@xebio6 he is a kick ass guitar player from Argentina, his gutar lessons are memorable, nevertheless in Spanish, quite sure he knows about Rick's channel.
The year was 1986, I just graduated college in San Diego and moved to a small (2300 people, one 4 way stop) town in Montana. One day I'm working out in our garden, with the radio propped in my bedroom window facing out so I can listen to music while I worked. Of course, there was no jazz stations, so I was playing the local "easy listening" station. All of a sudden a tune comes on that I was so immediately taken with that I ran in to the house, looked up the station in the phone book and called to find out who and what was playing. Turns out it was Smiles and Smiles to Go. From that moment on I was hooked as a Larry Carlton fan. I almost came out of my seat when Larry referenced it and played a few of the opening cords. Another side story: In the late 70's I was in HS at a small, conservative Christian school. Proms and dances were "of the devil," so we had "Banquets" instead. One year we booked two Christian musicians to perform - Eric Nelson and Michelle Pillar. Between her voice and her beauty, as a teenager, I was smitten. What a shock to find out years later that she and Larry are married. Funny the little connections that are made throughout our lives!
I met Larry at a clinic in Glasgow Scotland and asked him about his involvement in the Court and Spark sessions. I asked him if Joni had charts or anything mapped out for him and the other fellas, and he told me Joni just let them all do their thing. Being a massive Joni fan I found this so intriguing but not surprising, as Larry's licks are so recognisable. When I heard this recording for the first time back in 74, Joni's amazing song writing, the rhythm section and the guitar work weaving through that record made it a masterpiece. That chat you both had with him about those sessions reminded me of the stuff I asked him. Larry was and is a real gent and I can't believe it's nearly 50 years since I became a fan of his. . . . . Thanks for this, Cory, Mark and Larry.
When I see how much respect there is between the new and old generation, that makes my day. I have a big smile on my face after seeing this interview. Now I'm gonna enjoy my Sire Larry Carlton H7 guitar....Great guitars for the price
That little jam session at the end of the interview was immaculate! Had me smiling ear to ear, thanks for another fantastic, thoroughly entertaining, and musically enriching episode Cory! :)
Jesus man... I'm watching this as keyboard/percussion man and loving every single second of it. This is music entertainment at its finest and most educational and passionate. Thanks for all you guys do, you'll never be appreciated enough!!!
The "epic" scale on this channel has no limits: in fun, musicality, guests, editing, mixing - and information. Looking at Corys´ face while Larry is playing is worth gold ;-)
What an honor for Larry Carlton to share his skills and Cory there soaking it all in. It's kind of rare for the younger generations of players to be open minded enough to be inspired by legends such as Larry Carlton.
Season one was great, but I feel like everybody involved has really nailed the format with this season. Hope this show goes on for a long time, if Cory & Co. don't tire of it!
I'm impressed, Cory, by your interviewing skill. You keep the pace moving, you listen, and your enthusiasm for the material is obvious. I had the pleasure of working as the mixing assistant for Larry on two new tracks that were on the "Collection" album.... "Small Town Girl," and "For Heaven's Sake." It was truly a career highlight. On a more somber note...I was on a session with Rik Pekonnen (one of his go-to engineers) the morning Larry was shot by a home intruder. Larry literally "dodged a bullet" and we are lucky that we still have him with us as a musical inspiration. Again...great interview.
Nods and snaps and thanks to Wilton Felder and Joe Sample, too... those guys were there with Larry 45 years ago... Magic! Nice video, and thanks you all!
Wholly $h!t Cory!!! Amazing show. Production is top notch. These 2 guests knock it out of the park. This is a mandatory watch for all musicians. Thank you. Subscribed.
The G to C part is so awesome!!! Guitar is such a great and unlimited instrument. Larry and Mark just show us there are infinite voicing to play any harmony!
I understand now why my guitar teacher venerates Larry. What a touch, phrasing and sound ! Cory and Mark, you’re not legends yet just because you’re not old enough. You’ll be for sure ! Thanks Cory for all this awesome stuff, and legendary interviews.
I'm officially 45 mins late for work watching this AMAZING interview session. I'm a 30 yr old that feels like I'm 12 again learning from these amazing players and how honest and true they are about playing guitar and how it's STILL a journey for even them. So freaking inspirational!!😭
Thanks so much for this. Larry radiates mastery, how he goes from complexity to simplicity in such a meaningful way is brutal. And what a wonderful soul! I love listening to Mark’s amazing playing with you guys. The band, the talk, the jams, everything was AWESOME!!
wow, i’m sincerely amazed and very impressed at the quality and talent you continue to deliver. guitar content has been around on youtube but not like this. to see you grow from the audio podcasts to vlogs to a full blown prime time variety show has been something special. happy to have seen you guys live on a recent tour. WELL DONE CORY! :)
This video is such a gift to everyone who loves guitar! I just received my Sire H7 in cherry sunburst like Larry’s this past week and it was one of the easiest playing and most beautiful sounding guitars I’ve ever touched. Doesn’t get much better than these 3 guys on 1 stage!
only ever listened to Mark before this, and of course am a huge fan of his playing. always had heard of Cory Wong and Larry Carlton in passing, but hadn't ever listened to them. honestly this made me really appreciate both of their playing and styles just as much as Mark, in different ways of course, but thats the beauty of having unique styles. love this series!!
All three are amazing. I first heard Larry during my soft jazz phase and I continued listening when i moved on.. I've been listening to quite bit of Mark lately and Cory is Cory. I think Cory is one of the best rhythm guitarists that ever lived. He's always in the middle of amazing music. This is the kind of music we should hear playing on FM
I remember when we only had four TV channels. Now we get to watch awesome niche content like this on RU-vid. It's a damn exciting time to be alive!! Thanks Cory!
Ive been covertly anticipating this overt tribute to the guitar, from the bottom of my pick box I overtly appreciate you and thank you for this episode!
