Not only does Larry Carlton have the greatest overdriven jazz tone in history but he also has by FAR the greatest mullet in jazz history as well. Can you name a greater one? Yeah. That's what I thought.
Larry has great tone, but none touches Robben ford on the tone department imo. I might be biased because Robben is my all time favorite guitar player, but his tone is just imaculate
Larry Carlton, himself, needs to come back to this video, watch it, and start playing this song just like he did here! This is the BEST performance that I have ever seen him do for this particular song! I LOVE the rock mixed with Jazz sound. That is so awesome!
He is amazing! I like this rock influence sound here. It's the best that they have ever done for this song. Strikes Twice is also another one of my favorites that I like better when he puts the distorted rock sound into it. I want that shit loud! That's how I like it! Loud and raw!
Larry is one of the greatest in ANY style of Jazz period. He can sit down and play you 300 traditional bepop Jazz numbers. I seen the man play Charlie Parker stuff to the T. Get it right. LC is a guitar GENIUS who sometimes, granted, played some weird shit lol, but he could do it all and at a level that is above most guitarists in the entire world. This guy is so real. You wouldn't believe what he can do when he wants to do it.
@@jimSTRATemblin He did play smooth jazz at times, BUT, he also played the most sophisticated guitar music in the world. Look up Larry Carlton plays Miles Davis. Man! You wouldn't believe what he can do when he really chooses to do it, but sometimes, yeah, he'd play weird shit! LOL
every time I watch this great video of Larry Carl-~Tone~, I always keep hoping that his amp holds up!!!! Talk about hopeless romantics?!?! That's me~!~
@@guitarttimman I could swear it's Joel. Same nose, same facial expressions when he plays. His hair is a little longer but he was just coming off of a long 12-year gig with Spyro Gyra and so probably wanted a remake.
Thanks for the info on the Evans amp! I'll check it out! What a bummer for Larry, right at the closing statement of his trademark song too,, oh well, poop happens!
It wasn't. Aja came out in 1977, while Room 335 is from the 1978 Larry Carlton album. Larry was also heavily involved in the making of Aja and played on several tracks, in addition to his role as an arranger.
Sure Larry was inspired by Peg,, but the songs are really as different as spring and fall~!~ Fact~!~ And remember,,, Donald and Walter favored Larry over most other studio guitarists. Fact is Larry was their "go-to man" whenever they couldn't get what they wanted from the other studio guys,, and these were NO SLOUCHES WHATSOEVER~!~ Larry Carlton is arguably the very best ""over-all guitarist"" ever~!~ His style is coined,, "The Carlton Sound". He delivers-the-shivers~!~!~ No other guitarist other than maybe Robben Ford EVER did that to me~!~!~!~
That could sometimes require a minute of discussion possibly a rrun thru heaven help us all ,rehearsal; ,that would cut into my drinking time personally but as long as the drummer caps it ,then it's a good ending lol
Me too, I gave away milk crates full of LP's but LC and Robin Fords 1st solo LPs werent in those crates Hell I still have 9-10 of my old 8 track fav, out of hundreds keeping only those that never get old to the ears .Jimi,Zep,Trower ,etc lol , tape probably has gummed to itself but yes sir i can relate
Im sitting here laffin to myself about the bad vibes on the mullet era , I too fell into it with hair down my back and ears showing , but it served its purpose , when the cops were around , tuck it under your shirt you looked like the rest of so -called proper society when in your element let the flocks flo , same as appling for jobs . Id wear a mullet today if I could afford to cut the sides off whats still there lol ,Billy Ray Cyrus started that s**t I think and I dont like the guys musc but my mullet was better too.
@@eddgong we all do silly stuff when we're young,, just full o' piss n' vinegar as the saying ACCURATELY goes! Same as doing drugs back then,, stupid frikken shit!!!! I look back to my parents, my mom, my grandparents ..... they never touched that shit,, and never even thought about that crap!!!! It's named accurately: "dope", "weed", "whacky-weed" "Crack" !!! Fucking stupid, stupid shittttttttt~!~
In the early 80's I bought a Boogie in hopes of sounding more like Larry , didnt help much and too loud was often heard in the lounges , Later a couple of 335's that helped some and still my main axes but knowing even then it's all in the touch on that fretboard some p;layers you just know on the first couple of notes LC is one
This might piss off some people, but now is the time for the truth and reason sometimes got that goofy smile on his face. The master Jazz Guitarist can cover ANY of the other styles. Yes! Larry could have sat down for maybe 3 days and covered EVERYTHING Van Halen did. Larry can play str8 up bebop all night without stopping. He knows just like I do. LMAO🤣
This video reaffirms that I do not like the sound of P-90s. They are just so harsh sounding IMO, no subtlety whatsoever. Great for grungy power chords or nasty Blues though...
Actually,, it's more about the amp you use, and of course,, the quality of the speakers. Guitar tonality gets mushed after the volume is up past it's "clean-zone". Most guitarists exaggerate tonal differences especially when, as I said, the player turns up the volume beyond the clean-zone/safe zone(s) on amp and/or guitar. Larry Carlton used his Fender Tweed many times in the studio for Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, and he talks about how he would only turn the volume up just as soon as a little "grit-growl" could be heard, but NOT DIRTY!!! I owned a 1954 Les Paul with original "P-90's" and it was awesome! Besides the amp, speakers, and of course,, a good guitar,,, it's the hands of a good player such as Larry, arguably the BEST overall guitarist in history!!! Even the late Joe Pass, who gave Larry some lessons years ago, thought Larry was the real-deal~!~
Great player but a dreadful poser. Having admired his records for years but never having seen him, with the advent of RU-vid seeing him for the 1st time put me off him.
I absolutely love the Jess Lewis version of this song. Having said that I had to go out and listen to some Carlton versions since it is his song after all. Sadly with the big grin on his face in most of them the word "poser" entered my mind also. One version he played with a lot of intensity but a lot he seemed to just phone it in. This song can sound great or sound like elevator music and it is easy to go in either direction. I am sure many disagree with my opinion, but the beauty of being human is we all have the right to our own opinions. :-)
@@DrummerDanVa Opinions are like assholes,, everyone's got one,, but who wants to see it?!?!?!?! Geeez Loueeezzzz!!! Are you serious??? Your as shallow as your reflection~!~ Oi veyyy!!!
Good god what a stupid thing to say! The style is of its time and Larry always smiles at gigs even to this day as he is a happy chilled guy who loves playing with great musicians. And frankly if I could play like Larry and achieved all he has I would be smiling too!
