The tragic death by suicide of Norton is compounded by Shepherd's sudden, agonized realization that he loves his son. When he goes in search of Norton it's with the hope that he show the boy how much he loves him. And in that moment O'Connor made it possible for me, the reader, to sympathize with Shepherd. Thank you for describing in detail the events in the story.
