Larry Dodson is the first of his kind in Black History. In the world of Funk, Rock And Soul, Larry is ''Our'' First Funk Rock Star! Larry Had that ''Hair'', and knew how to work it. Larry had a Musical Funky Presence. Larry is ''Funk Magic'' in it's Purest Form. Larry was Sexy and Funky at the same time! The Bar Kays were really a Good Looking Funk Rock Band. Their Live shows were just like the Record and better! They never disappoint! In my opinion, when they came out with ''Shake your Rump to the Funk'', that's when they started to ''Build''. Musical Elevations in the middle 70's are now taking effect. On that album, a nice slow jam is on there called ''The Summer of our Love''. Larry is doing new stuff, with his vocals in 1976. Deep time! Then in 1978, I stand to be corrected, then did the ''Flying High On Your Love'' Album! That whole album is Listening Theater! Then ''HolyGhost'' came out of Nowhere! The BarKays was killing them in them Clubhouses in the South!! And Everywhere else! But then The ''Lights Of Life'' album, to me, was the ''Breakthrough'' within the Renovation! Great Album. Then later on Larry does, ''Your Place Or Mine'' Larry is A Rock Star with Funky Tendacies. He could have given Steven Tyler ( From, Aerosmith) and Run For his Money. You can't talk about the history of funk music without mentioning the BarKays. They were right there, at the very beginning! Their song 'Holy Ghost', though released a few years after it was recorded due to a contractual dispute, was actually recorded BEFORE Parliament's 'Up For The Downstroke' which, as a result, got on the airwaves first. By that time however, the Bar Kays had already established hardcore funk.
Mr. Dodson is a virtual history of funk/soul music. He sang with an incredible group and was with the preeminent soul funk record company ever! Nobody ever did it like stax!

I did a plumbing job for him a couple years ago. Our company is always the one he calls. I remember walking past that room with the records on the wall. I didn’t know who he was at the time but looked him up later. He lives about 15 mins away in a regular house. Very cool guy though and he has shag carpet in his whole bathroom lmao

Incredible band and Singer never forget them on the PFunk mothership tour. .They really taught me and my friends how you play live. ..It is a well known fact that they were one of the best Bands to hear live. Total control dynamically.
Great stuff.. Wonderful interview.. I had the pleasure of playing with the late Frankie J Thompson before he became a member of the Bar-Kays. We loved the album America "Do You See What I See" - among all of your other hits.
Good to see Larry back doing his thing again even though he’s not with the Bar-Kays anymore. The Bar-Kays are still one of my all time favorite funk bands and got all their hits. Larry helped keep them going. Big props to the brother and the band. Saw them at the FunkFest in Virginia Beach with the Bar-Kays new lead singer.

From the end of sixsties, almost 50 funk groups stayed togheter 30 Years but today in the world Is All rock n' roll. Why ??? Leave rock n' roll hall of fame !!! Is not rock ! Respect ! But Is soul ! Jazz ! Beat ! Afro roots ! Horns ! Percussions ! Dance ! Smell ! R n B ! Funk period ! X revange, the happiest music in the world with samba, salsa and Afro beat.
Back in the day I was a die hard big fan of the BarKays and Larry Dodson was the best entertainer I ever seen. I remember going to their concerts and had the best feeling ever. I was even part of their fan club back in the day. Today I still love the BarKays and Larry Dodson did his thing on that stage. The BarKays deserve all the best of acknowledgment.
