Wow! let's not forget that Larry G., was the original bassman for Sly & the Family S. during the late 60's! Yes he is the very first to record slapping the bass. God bless you Larry G.!

My guess is that it has to do with the fact that when he got involved with Prince, Prince changed so drastically. I have seen Larry, even sat in on a workshop at Paisley Park when Prince welcomed us for a week, but I am still bitter at Larry for pushing his religion on Prince during a time that Prince was very vulnerable.

They might not be playing in church now, but they have. Other musicians reading this know im telling the truth. Go to the beginning of this song to 0:27. That ain't nothing but church. @atinob43 My sincerest condolences..My path crossed Butch's only once in 77. He was an awesome musician. I only wish I could've heard his gospel music. Someone should create a Wiki page in his honor. Praying for your family and his former GCS bandmates and there families.

@bobfunk11 Larry Graham taught himself to play the bass because of church. He started playing the bass in church b/c his mama needed a drum type sound and they didn't have a drummer.

@1972Muttley Yeah. I discovered this tune recently when I heard a cover of it by Robert Randalph, Joe Bonamassa and Pino Daniele on the Crossroads '10 festival dvd and noticed that too :) I really like it. You should definitely check that version out as well if you haven't already. Cheers! ;)
He Johnny do you know if there is a copy of UPSIDEDOWN anywhere? I love anything Hershall wrote or co-wrote. I just wish he got his due. I wish he would come back to the music scene !
The original audio recording is very low - so you will have to change volume level at your end - If I jack it up my end the hiss level starts to drown out the audio signal Bob
