Nicotine addicted residents of a midwestern town try to give up smoking for a cash prize. This forgotten comic gem was TV titan Norman Lear's only directorial effort. Shot in 1969, it went unreleased until 1971, when it proved to be a surprise hit. One of the darkest, most despairing social satires of the Nixon era, with a fabulous cast of tv comedy favorites. This is a mostly textless trailer made for foreign use.
And, as always, find more cinematic greatness at www.trailersfromhell.com

Cold Turkey and Thank you for smoking would make a good double feature.

This was another CBS Late Movie gem that I watched w/my dad. It occurs to me 50 some years later that we probably watched this right around the time my dad was trying to quit smoking. After a couple of stops and starts he did and made it into his 80s. I've noticed that Larry Karaszewski either by design or happenstance, spotlights a lot of 60s/70s movies that I remember watching on the CBS Late Movie. Always during the summer when I could stay up late.

It's a remarkable satire. And yes, it's very dark and cynical.

Love this film. The depiction of the "god like" media is classic. Still relevant today....

Barnard Hughes nearly steals the movie. He played so many low-key characters, but his doctor character here is just the opposite, always on edge. And Judith Lowry, just as you say. And Graham Jarvis.

Are their deaths assured? I feel like sure, they were shot and ignored for the moment, but eventually someone helped them.

Wow a film I had never hear of! I must seek it out, the 'happy ending' sounds to good for words.

I saw it on original release. I think that was in a drive in theater. The dog in the opening credits set the stage when he pissed on a sign.

Been seeing lots of friends and acquaintances post about this with Norman Lear's passing. Hope it finds a new audience to rediscover it!

Agreed. Revolution is a much better film and a lot funnier. It deserves to be better known.

Have you seen Scavenger Hunt? I thought it was a good movie that's like It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World and has one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's earliest roles (a cameo).

Nobel didn’t invent gunpowder. The Chinese did, centuries ago. He invented nitroglycerin, which is used in dynamite. Ka-BOOM!

"The economic collapse of the town" No, the town was making bucks, it was the mental collapse of the town when deprived of their crutches.

No the premise of "Cold Turkey" is based on the real economic agricultural collapse of small town Iowa that was starting even in the late sixties coupled with the fictional closing of a cold war airbase in the town of Eagle Rock. It's explained at the films start in the credits and opening scenes.

@@seththomas9105 It's also a philosophical study of bad people doing good things, and being thought of as heroes. It's about our willingness to put the wrong people on a pedestal. Cold Turkey is about many things.

@@RickTBL I agree, good people doing bad things and bad people doing good things IMHO.

I got Cold Turkey because my heroes Bob and Ray are featured prominently but the movie as a whole is difficult to watch. It's seems to be vitriolic rather than satirical, even trendily anti-America at times; and that's coming from a European! Despite being extremely funny in places, it's patchy and never seems to settle on what it wants to be or say - at times it just feels like an incoherent rant. Newhart is underused and reducing Edward Everett Horton to fart jokes in his final role just feels like cruelty. Cold Turkey is an interesting oddity but ultimately it deserves its obscurity. In my humble opinion, of course.
