I gotta say Larry hit the nail on the head with this. My first handgun was a Sig Sauer SP2022, I have no problems picking up my P226 or a Beretta M9 and running it efficiently. I have a Sig Sauer Emperor 1911 I ran that one for a few months before buying a P320 and Glock 19x I was proficient with those since I got them. The bolt action is to be expected only differences between most on the market are the bolt throw angles. I have multiple pump action shotguns you’ve ran one you’ve pretty much ran them all. The AK style of firearms is something I’m lacking in because I don’t have experience with one yet. Solid video and 100% accurate good job Larry.
Love this video. I was an AR-15/M16A1 guy for a couple of decades of my life in the US Army. Now I am an AK-74 guy. Why you ask? Let me tell you. An AR is like a scalpel for performing very precise surgery and it does a fantastic job while it is sharp. When a scalpel gets dull it doesn't cut so well. An AK is a lot like a hatchet...when it gets dull you swing it harder and you can still perform an amputation with no problem. That's why I am now an AK guy. Keep these videos coming Larry!
@@turdferguson3803 AK iron sights are in my opinion nearly unbeatable. Even if it was easy to mount an optic, I wouldn't want to unless I'm reaching out past 300 yards all the time
His goal was to suggest 5 guns that, by owning them, you'd establish a foundation of skills that would serve you best to easily branch off into many guns -and I don't think he's wrong. I'd say the K98k could be substituted for other Mauser derivatives like a M48 Yugo Mauser and others, but I agree it should be there. The only other thing; I agree with the 870 but only an older-production one. Remington's modern quality control doesn't give me confidence to recommend purchasing a new one, go for an old school 870 when they were made better. Great vid, I like the premise and the list is straight to the point.
Mr2ndAmendment I think it was implied that a Mauser derivative is ok. For every other gun he literally says a gun like this is ok. Obviously we can’t get a Colt M4a1, and literally said you don’t have to get a Russian Tula AKM.
Police/gov surplus 870s are cheap on top of high quality too. Personally I prefer Mossbergs but next time I come across an old 870 that lived in a police cruiser for a few decades I'll add it to the collection. Last cruiser 12 gauge I picked up was an early run High Standard, nothing fancy but the smoothest pump action I ever had.
You don't need an old Remington 870 if you want that style (as opposed to Mossberg 500). Check out the Chinese 870 clone IAC Hawk 982 (there may be others), generally review consensus was they were an exact clone and made to better quality then the "poor" quality 870's.
I appreciate the CZ-75 mention. I own three variants now and the CZ is my favorite of the wonder-9s. The CZ-75 SP-01 Tactical (the all steel version) is worth a try.
As a Canadian, my personal favourite of the colt line are the C7/C8 models. Essentially identical to the M4 and M16s used by the Americans, with some subtle differences in rails and barrels. I agree with your selection. Especially the 870. It's a fantastic pump shotgun
@@quarterpounderwithcheese3178 No they're not. I love Israeli weapons but the Galil was nothing more than an AK with shit welded on it. Good in Black Ops 1, not so impressive in real life.
I feel like people dont understand the concept of the video. He's saying these are good weapons to help with familiarity for other platforms. He's not trying to say these are better platforms than other guns. Like people keep saying they'd substitute this for that, it's not the point of the video
I understand the purpose here and don’t disagree with his picks. My comment on Facebook was that I wouldn’t start with this rubric - I would start with weapon capabilities/cartridges. A serious gun guy “should” have these, but most folks I know are still in build-a-basic-armory mode. For me that looks like: AR in 5.56, Shield 9mm, 500/590 or 870, G30, 308 Battle Rifle of choice. There are other ways to do this depending on circumstances.
Don't need a mauser for familiarity with bolt guns. Any Remmington 700-based rifle will do that. Having both an M9 and M1911 is redundant - pick a different type of pistol over one of the two, as in one that doesn't use an external hammer, like a Glock, or has something fundamentally different and is widely used, like a CZ.
Hi Larry! We just put up our “Top 5 Guns For All Americans.” It is a bit different then your choices, but I always Respect your opinion & choices. Thanks for making this video and my Son and I wish you the Best. B9USA Sr.
Totally agreement on this list. My top 5: AKM 47 in 7,62x39mm, Colt Single Action 44. Rem. Mag., Sig P226 in 9mm, Mauser 98 in .30-06 and a Mossberg 500A in 12/76.
What great content! Totally thought you might have went a little crazy with a “top five” video with those picks. Then I actually listened to what you were saying. It reminds me of something my father told me as I was destroying the clutch on his car while he was trying to teach me how to drive a manual transmission. He stayed surprisingly calm and told me that it was important to learn because if I could drive a stick, I could drive anything. Maybe not the exact same thing but close. Awesome work!
Thanks for doing the video, I get why. I am also retired military and people just don't understand how many hours a day you work while deployed and the toll it takes on the body. A normal work week while on deployment or preparing for one was 84 hours give or take a few so I can relate. Keep up the awesome slow-moving videos. You bring meaning to gun-porn!
I had most of these before I joined in 87 Nice list Larry And to add something I carried one off your list that my uncle carried in WWII So that piece saw action in two different conflicts nearly 50 years apart. It's retired now 1911 lover from way back
It's also more reliable and easier to fix. The ejector, the most common part to break on pump shotguns, is just a screw down part on the 500, not fixed like the 870.
this is perfect for me i just knew im on the right path , i got 4 oh these , including an even more rare AK47 , a 1952 ishvek underfolder and its full auto condition is almost brand new wich is my crown jewel in my collection . thanks for the vid larry , keep up the good work.
Bassel D.....yup in Lebanon rare guns are priced same as all other AKs because generally in middle eastern country no one knows the value of rare guns and gun models
Soviet Russia yea i have a pretty rare collection from nazi germany for example and the most priced piece i got was a k98k for 2k $ , on the other hand i bought 2 stg44s from a syrian guy both for 500$ , a walther p 38 is like 400$ cause people hat the barrel lmao , and lots n lots of unimaginable prices.
Bassel D....man I mean like a 1976 factory condition izhevsk AKM is priced at 400 Dollars , they were ex soviet stocks brought to Syria by the Russians to arm the 5th assault corp(فيلق خامس اقتحام) and were sold by Syrian officers
He said it was from '68 which was the year of the GCA banning imported select fires. There would be no need for it to be a kit build in '68. It could've been legally imported up until that year.
@@ModernWarflare Even if its a parts kit build, the majority of the parts are Soviet made, if possible, the trigger group, safety selector lever, barrel, bolt carrier and barrel are matching, maybe except for the receiver.
I'm so fucking tire of the .22 worshipers. Anything a 10/22 can do an AR can do better. 5.56 stops fragmenting past ~200 yards so if you need to shoot a squirrel and don't want it to explode back the fuck up. Unlike a 10/22, an AR can be used to hunt deer and decent sized game in a pinch. Most people would struggle to make accurate hits with a 10/22 past 100 yards, unlike an AR which can make accurate hits well past 400 yards with the proper ammo. To each their own. If the shit ever hits the fan I'll have a ton of fun shitting on fanny pack wearing 10/22 wielders. My weapon of choice is my SCAR 17. Twenty rounds of .308 as fast as you can pull the trigger, with accuracy that enables consistent 800 yard hits with a scope.
@@ModernWarflare How about an LMT MWS308, 16 in chromed barrel, topped with a Mk. 4. 4.5x14x50, 175 gr. FGMM, Harris bipod, and Magpul D50, with dope out to 700 yds? That'll dominate a few landscapes.
yeah you can flip a coin on which would be more essential, a revolver or a 1911. I personally am a huge fan of 357 magnum so revolvers will always be in my collection. Dont really care much for a 45 acp shooting gun
You need to redo this video with a disclaimer and 3rd grade level explanation of what this video is about. Reading the comments, it appears many think this is a "top 5" video. They missed the part about the firearms being good representatives of the individual operating systems. I thought it was a great video myself.
I clearly understood his video and what he was speaking of and it was not 3rd grade level. Larry has done more for his country than most and he shares his knowledge. Absolutely a top shelf citizen.
I agree...top 5 gateway firearms to properly build the foundation since most guns are offshoots of those five... On a more general level tho, I would say that the shotgun should have been placed on that table irregardless of personal perspective (if we're talking objectivity here)
I heard saying beware the man who has only one gun he probably knows how to use it. I think your point is much more pertinent, make sure you understand the manual of arms of the base operating platforms, that way you can pretty much use most firearms you come across even if you have not see it before, and I totally agree with this approach. Great video thanks for taking the time to put it together.
Sure the M1A is good, but it's essentially the same operating system as the mini 14 except it shoots 308 instead of 223. The reason why I chose the mini 14 was because it was in 223 and the Mauser was more in the power class of 308 already. There essentially needed to be a 223 replacement for the AR15 and that's where the mini 14 comes in for restrictive states.
How in the hell did he get a real M4A1? Those didn't even start production until 1995, 9 years after the '86 Hughes ban. He must be an 07 ffl / 02 SOT. Or a dealer, I can't think of another way.
Thanks Larry, Nice job. Reading through a few dozen of the comments, I find myself continually amazed at mankind's need to criticize. I personally found your video concise and informative.
PC B - while I like revolvers, they are not nearly as reliable in adverse conditions as pistols. They aren't a must-have, despite Rick Grimes' python being pretty sweet.
I understand where you are coming about reliability, but I looked at this video as having the knowledge of how to use different weapons systems. I know a lot of people who cannot even open the cylinder of a revolver or understand how the double action / single action works.
I love the Mauser. Shooting it is on my bucket list. However, I'm surprised he didn't choose the Lee Enfield, with its ability to work the bolt without moving your face away from the butt, as well as the obvious 10-round magazine advantage.
I nailed myself in the face with my 1903 last year. Was single loading cartridges and the bolt doesn’t quite come back far enough. Well afterwards switched the mag cutoff and instantly smacked myself in the face with the bolt. Felt great
Brazilian Luke I would say AR-10, but, that's restricted here in Canada. Though there is the BLC 102 which is non-restricted ( look up are firearm categories). What's funny one of the most popular battle rifles in Canada is the Norinco m305 which is banned to be important in u.s. They're popular semi-automatic hunting rifles if you can bear the weight.
I AM ALIVE !!!!! Has the same flexibility as the AR-15. They're still being produced unlike most other battle rifles hence larger availability of parts and accessories and decent pricing. I look at u.s. gun sites with envy as the cheapest AR-10 I've seen is 700 bucks not to mention probably building one is cheaper. Here in Canada cheapest option we have is the Norinco m305 however, they are priced at $650-750 but, quality control suffers due that cheap price (over indexed barrels, excessive headspace for 308, really cheap op-rod spring and guide. $70 fixs that through. The op-rod guide itself can be loose, improper shimming on the gas system. Thats is an easy fix if the buggers haven't weld it the flash hider on. Which they do with many of the rifles). Other 308 battle rifles in Canada that you can use for hunting and out in the woods is the new BLC-102 (AR-102, early AR-10) which is in pre-sale only right now and is showing it's signs of only being recently developed, M1A, Sig 542, and the XCR-M. Those are our options. They're all $1,500 and above....
I guess I should add my two cents worth. I spent 20 yrs in the Air Force (ours not theirs) and while in the UK worked with 10 Gp out of Bad-T for 4 yrs with unconventional warfare communications. It took a while but once the Green Beanies learned that me and the captain that worked for me could deliver what they needed (ie: AN/URC104 man pack satcom system among other things) I was pretty well accepted (the fact that I was not military jump qualified, a TSgt and in the AF not withstanding). All you special ops guys are unbelievable! The best day I ever had I couldn't qualify to take your "Q" course. I stand in awe. Thanks for your service and screw the bastards that don't like your stuff.
After watching, I agree, all great choices. I like how you went through the lineage of each and provided a descriptive "why" to your choices. Also acknowledging that you don't usually bring out the shotguns was appreciated, I almost forgot until you said it. Excellent production and content as always too. Thank you again.
The shotgun surprised me b/c I know how LAV feels about them. Still, a good wild card. Would like to see more videos of shooting on the move like the scrambler with a variety of firearms and the movie analysis like you did with Collateral.
For the Mauser, there is also an alternative from the Mosin Nagant (either the Russian M44 carbine, M91/30 or the Finnish M39) but that is if you can get your hands on one.
I think a good old fashioned revolver of any caliber. If you have a mis fire, pull the trigger again. I would recommend a .357 magnum because you can also shoot .38 special in them as well
Great choice of firearms. I would probably add a Glock 17. It's reliability, caliber, and simplistic design makes it easy to use by a wide variety of people.
sam cab Yes, but more or less then the options displayed in this video. I for one believe these choices are not only based upon that perspective of being able to use most varieties of weapon if you are aware of these weapon systems but also due to the fact that these weapons are one of the most common weapons to stumble upon in the world and then the plus side that alot of weapons are inspired and based on same principles and functionalities as the AK, M4 kar98k etc...
Are you a natural lefty?.. as far as a firearm I would add/ or replace, it would be a 9mm carbine of sorts. Mp5, apc9 or in my case the Stribog sp9a1. Nice compact hi-cap home defense weapon. Its a weapon anybody in your house can easily manage when it matters.
He is, Just as I am but at a young age teachers in school taught me to use my right hand over my left as it was easier for them to teach you how to write, By them doing so at a young age it made me typically shoot right handed however I can shoot just as good left handed, At times I'll hold a pistol in each hand and alternate shots from left to right at 2 different targets irregardless of caliber, It also helped when Boxing Golden glove champions and I had no boxing experience/just street fighting, They couldn't understand my versatility and thats why most Professional boxers that are naturally right handed train to be left handed as a left hander in boxing ring is use to boxing right handers whereas right handers are not use to boxing left handers and puts them at a disadvantage during defense/guard as it leaves you wide open to be slugged
Good call Larry. As an former Grunt (11B) you know I have an m4 and an A1 rifle from back in the day. I also carried a 1911(got a couple of them) and then a m9 as well. Naturally I have quite a few AK's. I have a few k98's, and I have a couple of 870's as well. So as a veteran, and current gun shop owner - I'm a gun guy. Love them!
I would have kept just one handgun and replaced it with a submachine gun, as tme MP5, just to add some variation. Still rock solid picks: the best assault rifles, the best bolt action rifle, the best single and double action handguns.
I'm with you, remove one of the handguns and replace it with a 308 battle rifle and keep the shotgun as the wild card. I don't think the WWII bolt gun would be my pick for the bolt action rifle for this concept, it's probably what he had on hand. The Remington 700 has got to be just as prolific by now and would be a more up-to-date choice, they both work the same after all.
The Remington 700 uses a modern version of the Mauser bolt action design, that's why he went with the original I think. I would have swapped the AK for a PCC like the MPX or MP5 personally, the 1911 for an HK USP, and the Beretta for a Sig 320 or Glock 17
My comment is: I highly respect your knowledge, experience and authority on the subject regarding firearms. What you recommended, I concur, Mr. Tier 1 "Smooth" Operator😎
Would like to see a revolver on there. Im not american so would prob ditch the 1911 for a s&w 686 and swap the beretta for a glock or cz. The rest are fine by me.
HURT 1 the weight helps with recoil, mine is more reliable than my 226, M&P9 and Glock that I had so finnicky? Not in a properly built 1911. And I personally will take accuracy and shootability over capacity any day. And there are hi capacity 1911s that hold more than most handguns. But then you lose the comfortability factor.
I just bought a P226 and waiting for my license to come back and that's the second message I've received saying it has reliability issues. All I have heard previously is that it is one of the most reliable pistols ever made. I think i've scuttled myself. It's hard to beat the CZ Shadow for accuracy and price it was the second gun I ever bought and everything else has been a disappointment since.
HardcoreAmericanUSA I meant for actual carry and duty use. Of course it helps with recoil, but that's the only benefit. Why do you think police officers and military do not carry them anymore? I don't have any issue with a 1911, they are neat handguns and if you have one that's reliable that you trust your life to, then great. I myself have never personally seen one that runs and eats any ammunition like a Glock or any modern day striker fired handgun for that matter, reliably.
Marine Veteran USA that's what the wild card is for. I'd disagree with the revolver, because of all the drawbacks, for a 'need' gun. But to each their own.
I'm a damn good shot and even I don't like carrying a revolver. If gang bangers have glocks with 30 round mags I'd like at least 15 to stand a chance in hell. I don't care that statistically it's unlikely someone needs that many rounds, why not take all you can get? I love revolvers but they're strictly range novelties for me at this point. If I want to carry a heavy, powerful gun I'll buy a .50 AE Desert Eagle.
There's a reason that military and law enforcement carry semi autos, they're just as reliable these days (unless you get a high point or 1911) and carry more ammo with faster reloads.
best revolver i ever owned was a stainless double action Ruger security six. in .357 mag. my mom passed it on to me. she bought it in 1984 or something when the night stalker richard ramirez was killing people in our area.
Loved the Remington 870 but I became a Mossberg shotgun guy; I own 4 of them, 2 pump, 2 semi-auto. The only other shotgun I own is my RPI XB3G, modified for 3-Gun Benneli. I don't own a Barretta, never was a fan, but own SEVERAL Colt 1911's and one Springfield RO model I use for USPSA Limited 10 division, Sig Sauers including the new M-17 which I like a lot, along with the P226, P320 R1, P320 X-5 Competition (also for 3-Gun), 7 AR platforms one in 7.62 (Sig 716), and two .300blk builds. Even have one Smith & Wesson M19 .357 mag. I have a few bolt action rifles, including the Mauser, and for the $$$$ the Ruger Precision .308 is a LOT of gun, put a Leupold scope on it, VERY accurate. Sadly, I live in Crook, er Cook County Illinois which is constantly trying to kill us with gun control BS.
I have 4 of the 5! I have a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06 instead of the WWII Mauser! I also am not big on the shotgun, but have a Ithaca Model 37 like LAPD carried, yes I was Police Officer for 30+ years. Really liked the LAPD! So in patrol car along with my AR-15 had the Shotgun! Thanks
I'd only go in a slightly different direction, final list would be: Smith & Wesson M&P 15 II, Savage 110, Glock 19, CZ P-01, Mossberg 590. I feel the shotgun is very necessary just on the basis of how many of them are out there, and I dropped the 1911 because I feel you can learn almost everything you'd need to know to operate it from any DA/SA. I could also probably go either way on the AR or AK, and it seems an atrocity to leave out an AK, it's just that the AR is more common in North America and cheaper to acquire one of good, new manufacture. I'd also consider dropping either the CZ or Glock for an exposed hammer double action revolver of some sort but that'd be a tough call. Reasoning would be just wanting to cover the widest range of controls and archetypes possible, same methodology as in your list. It's a challenging list to assemble.
I'd like to add a revolver, preferably a .357 Magnum to this list of essentials. Apart from that, great recommendations. - CZ 75 (single /double action pistol) ✔ - Zastava M24/52-Č (Mauser 98) ✔ - Alfa Proj 3561 (.357 Magnum/.38 Special) ✔ - AKM....pending ⭕ - CZ Bren 2....pending ⭕ - pump action shotgun....prohibited ✖ 😭
Good video. One of the first guns I have learned to run is a double/single action revolver. Learning how to shoot that style of trigger well is a nice tool to have because now shooting lighter better triggers is easy. The reloads are also fun to practice and again makes something reloading a magazine a cake walk in comparison.
