Service men and women put everything on the line for our country, including their lives. Many pay the ultimate price, but for those that are fortunate enough to walk away with their lives, their time spent in the armed forces can take an enormous toll on their bodies. Larry gives his personal account of how 20 years in the military (15 of which were spent in Delta Force) has taken its toll.

"And Indeed they were the oldest soldiers of Philip and Alexander, war's athletes as it were, without defeat or a fail up to that time, many of the now seventy years old, and not a man younger than sixty. And so, when they charged upon the forces of Antigonus, they shouted 'It is against your fathers ye sin, ye miscreants;' and falling upon them in rage they crushed their whole phalanx at once, not a man withstanding them, and most of their opponents being cut in close quarters." - Plutarch ; The Silver Shields of Gabiene

Interesting quote though Antigonus won the Battle of Gabiene.
@crocodiletearsbro5782
@crocodiletearsbro5782 8 лет назад
A55tech While he did lose the battle it was due to Eumenes cavalry being out matched. The Silver shields were like Napoleons' old guard in that they were just a step above the rest "While Eumenes' camp was being plundered and his left flank dissolving into rout, the Argyraspides(Silver Shields) advanced on Antigonus' phalangites. Completely smashing them, the Argyraspides routed the entire Antigonid phalanx killing five thousand men without a single loss. Eumenes ordered Peucestas to go back into combat with his cavalry and pursue the advantage, but the latter refused to move. Seeing this, Antigonus then ordered his light horse under Peithon, just finished plundering Eumenes' camp to attack the Argyraspides in their rear. However, the Argyraspides were not ordinary soldiers, instead of panicking and fleeing, they calmly formed a large square and safely marched off the field. Although Antigonus was victorious, the battle's result was, like Paraitacene, inconclusive, with Eumenes still possessing a strong force. That evening, he attempted to convince the army to fight Antigonus again the next day for a conclusive result. However, his army was reluctant, as the satraps of this force wanted to retire to protect their satrapies. However, it was the Argyraspides who took matters into their own hands. Learning that Antigonus had ownership of their wives, children and the cumulative plunder of nearly 40 years of continuous warfare, they secretly opened negotiations with Antigonus for their safe return. In return for handing over Eumenes, they would get their baggage and families returned to them. Eager for the return of their baggage, the Argyraspides promptly handed Eumenes and his senior officers to Antigonus. Although reluctant at first, Antigonus was persuaded by his army to execute Eumenes. Eudemus, who had come from India as an ally of Eumenes and was responsible for the recruitment of Eumenes' elephants and light infantry was also executed, as was the leader of the Argyraspides, Antigenes. The Macedonians of Eumenes were then drawn into the ranks of Antigonus' army. However, given the demonstrated fickle loyalty of the Argyraspides, Antigonus never used them in a battle. They were sent to the far off satrapy of Arachosia (in modern Afghanistan), where the local satrap Sibyrtius was given special orders to send them out in two or three on dangerous missions, to ensure they didn't survive and become a cohesive unit again.

There is a people problem in this country. The problem is; it's no longer considered socially acceptable or legal to punch deserving assholes in the face. In the days of the founding fathers if a man insulted another man he had better been willing to back it up. Often to the death. It's no secret the pussyfication of America has become a disease.

It's not about killing each other over insults. It's about a general lack of honor in society. It is the symptom of social decay that people think they can say anything they wish without being held accountable. Your sarcastic comment just helps add justification to my argument. "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit." -Oscar Wilde
@vgman94
@vgman94 9 лет назад
Marcus Hagey To be fair, _killing_ each other should be left behind. But basic brawls over some shit should be left primarily out of courts. I agree with the freedom of speech insofar as it deals with beliefs and politics. But not _everything_ should be acceptable to say, including bullying, slander and the like. That can cause damage and even indirectly cause things like suicides and mass shootings in rarer cases. Having a bit of an aggressive release before such things would ease tension in society, and bring some form of reprieve from the constant intrusion of laws on our society I mean, if two people willingly (with witnesses or a video tape) get into a brawl, as long as neither sustain injuries that prevent them from going to work the next day, what is wrong with that? Most people aren't eve articulate enough to fight verbally for what they believe in, so it's not like fighting verbally or physically will make any difference to anything. But the positive of the physical side is that it adds some relief from natural tension of our aggressive nature.

My first day on Ft. Bragg, 2006, during the introduction, a Sergeant was telling us (this was when the deployments were CONSTANT rotations in and out), "If you see a guy with a maroon or tan beret and a belly, maybe it's because getting shot in the midsection or blown up can make sit-ups difficult." I never forgot that, or what it meant. You don't own anyone an explanation for anything, Mr. Vickers.
@maxbooth179

Sit ups don't have much to do with how fat you are. Idk too much about these things but I think a 30% bf might indicate a better prepared higher performance soldier. Calories encourage physical recovery and high bf% lowers chance of dying in hospital. Up to a point.

I am 37 years old and a 100% disabled veteran. The Army considers me retired, well at least that is what my ID card says. Sound pretty good to be so young and be retired, but it kind of sucks when you come to realize why. I wont go in to details about things I did or how I got hurt, but I will explain what is wrong. Though I am not fat, I am broken down. In fact people look at me and cannot believe I have the problems that I have. I still lift weights but that is my main physical activity. Running, climbing, and playing sports is out of the question. My left leg goes to sleep and my lower back cramps up if I carry anything heavy on my back. Shit, it even hurts to weed eat after I mow the grass. Nobody believes it when I tell them these things. They just go off of what they see and that is not really a good assessment or a fair one. People do not understand that there are two factors that effect the body, age and mileage. 1) Two compression in the cervical spine and one collapsed disc at L5S1. 2) Collapsed left arch and herniated ligaments in left foot and ankle. 3) Arthritis, bone spurs, and stress fractures in/on left elbow. 4) Arthritis left and right ankle. 5) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome left wrist. 6) 3 concussions I sound like a fucking a game of dice when get out of bed in the morning. When I get cold and wet everything hurts. People older that me like to give me shit and tell me that I am too young to have problems. That shit gets on my nerves. They have no idea what I have done or where I have been. There are a lot of guys like me who gave their all to the military. Call it patriotism call it, psychosis call it an excuse, but no matter what you call it; I call it my reality. Larry may be a bit overweight, but so what. Many of you that watch these videos are overweight too. In fact most of the guys I see at the range have guts and spare tires.

@@yesterdaysnews3524 You sir, are either uninformed, ignorant, or both. I can testify on the life of my children that this is true, and it was how it worked at the 1Ist Inf Div (Fwd) in 1985-86. I would screen the applicants on paper, (eliminating anyone that had judicial or family issues pending or in progress, then set up the use of the movie theater for one of their members to come give his recruiting speech. At that time, any E-5 or above (with at least 2 years TIG and 4 years TIS) could apply for the school. They encouraged all E-5's and above to attend the presentation, but it was actually voluntary to attend. After the presentation and individual short interface sessions 1-on-1 with the presenter, there was a PT test (5-Event) scheduled. You had to pass this to be considered for the next steps. (My involvement stopped there, but if it was needed, I would set up the transportation to/from the pool for the swim part of the test) It really chaps my backside when ignorant people like you feel like you have to question what someone posts. I was there. I know how it worked then. If you were there, or you were involved personally at another location, then you are qualified to make your comments based on your personal experiences. My post is my own experience, and is not yours for questioning. Do no post on what you think or perceive how it worked, as it simply makes you look stupid. EchoSevenNine Furthermore Larry, if your Country needed you again, to train people, or to take up the call, those pounds would fall away because you would commit 100%. Old War horses, their training, instincts, knowledge and muscle memory and experience is all there, fitness comes and goes, but the mental side of it, means that a Greenhorn might beat you over a 100 metres, but you've still got the smarts and won't fall apart because you've been tempered by the Anvil of Conflict. But I think alot of the haters don't realise what happens in middle-age. Plus you've earned the right to have a second helping of whatever, when those "Arm Chair Keyboard commenting heroes" were ordering their "Chai Latte's to go" then driving to the Office, you were in the field eating MRE's, living out of your pack and putting your life on the line. The fact you are still doing CV is good man, just don't cripple your knees, hips or ankles or later life will be awful.

The variable he doesn't mention once in this video is diet...I'm guessing he's leaving it out deliberately because that's the REAL problem that he doesn't want to talk about. The sort of dramatic weight loss he's had in the last year or so is commonly seen with gastric bypass patients, so that surgery or something similar is my guess.
@titaniumballs8757

@discorperted That's the dumbest thing i've ever heard. When you wake up everyday in pain it takes its toll emotionally, and it's a lot of stress on top of everything else he already does. Very easy to see how you could just not give a shit about what you eat if you have went through and are still going through the stuff Larry has.

Listening to this means a lot. Most of this reminds me a lot of my dad who spent 15 years in special operations and described it just like you did, Larry. He was in a helo crash where he was the only survivor. Ankle replacements and a torn up body from years in special operations, GRS, and being a police officer left him totally battered to the point that every morning I had to watch my dad struggle through pain to just walk down the stairs to take my sister and I to school. Not one time did he ever regret it and I appreciate this video more then I can say. He didn't talk too much about what he did in the military but when he did I loved hearing about it and since loosing him last December, its nice to hear a story like yours that reminds me so much of him. Thank you.

Life after the Military: Why a lot of combat arms Soldiers and Marines get fat 1. Staying in military shape is a job in itself. 2. Injuries you've obtained during military service accumulate over time. It's like having a small crack in a windshield. Eventually over time, it can get worst. 3. Back injury. The cost of being in the Infantry or any Special Operations outfit. And re-occurring back injuries are career killers. 4. Knee injury. More common among Airborne types. 5. "Going to sick call for an injury is for pussies" rhetoric. Very common among Infantry units that do too much stupid shit to try to be "hardcore." A lot of military related injuries can be avoided and save taxpayer dollars in the long run by doing smart PT and not trying to look like what they see in the movies. Plenty of vets could have avoided permanent injuries just by going to sick call when they were really hurt. 6. In comparison to military life of the sorts, civilian life is like slamming on the brakes at 100mph. Why? Because combat arms has always been physically high speed.
@LionWolfTactical
@LionWolfTactical 9 лет назад
Very true! All of these statements are true for many many soldiers, not just the infantry. Training and training and training regardless of MOS will do this to you, some more than others. I know infantry guys who have less injuries then combat support guys, then I know of guys who didn't come home and guys who have no injuries. Like my service, everyone's service experience is different. I know guys who got more injuries training for deployment then actually deployment itself. Army Ranger who just finished ranger school, then breaks his back during a training exercise, and never even gets deployed. Another Ranger gets deployed multiple times, and gets out healthy, it's just crazy how things are different for everyone who serves. The tone of feelin like a pussy for going to the doctor is a major inquiry producer for sure. Great post brother!

He is a great man, but he is overweight. As Rainer Sherwood said, the two have nothing to do with each other. By telling someone who is overweight that they are not overweight, not only are you lying to them and insulting their intelligence, you're hurting them by suggesting that they don't need to lose weight. Mr. Vickers will be healthier and live longer if he loses weight. Why, then, would you insist he doesn't need to lose weight? Think about it. I'm sure Mr. Vickers will change his life for the better. (And to reiterate, telling him he is overweight is not said to be rude, but of concern, just as a doctor would tell a patient that they are overweight, to promote a change in lifestyle to become healthier and hopefully live longer.)

Arma Letalia compared to many Americans he isn't particularly overweight. He looks like a typical middle aged man in the developed World. You cannot be the same size at 55 that you were at 25. Larry I went to SFAS 3x and I still couldn’t get it right. It’s been difficult watching my friends be successful and staying positive. I’m still in uniform and trying to make sense of the experience, but your statement about leading a life worth living made me feel a little better today. Thank you.

This is coming from an incoming intel guy. I ship out in about 23 days as of this post. I would love to drop a packet and attend SFAS in the future. I know it means nothing, and it sounds patronizing, but I really admire your dedication and perseverance. Who the hell sends themselves to Selection three times? In a weird way, your comment also inspires me like Larry does. Grit is everything, isn't it? I hope you can still maintain that fire in you, and even if you may not find success as a quiet professional, you can still be a 'quiet professional' in your own way. Take care.

histotoxic I don't judge *civilians* for living unhealthily, I don't even think Vickers is wrong for telling people to get off his case. We're a nation that was founded by violent uprising and if we're going to be a society that accepts violence committed on our behalf by a small number of us then the two groups we should honor are those that committed the most to the war and those that were deprived the most as casualties. I dislike people making excuses that are post hoc fallacies, but I'm also guilty of that .

Recently started watching from the UK and frankly it was clear to me from the beginning that you were ex forces and knew your stuff, your appearance didn't really occur to me until I came across this video. As a heavy 46 year old I have to say that if all these 20 somethings think staying fit in middle age is easy, well they'll learn, it comes to us all eventually, even if you haven't spent a life putting your body through extreme physical punishment. Don't pay them any attention.

Mr. Vickers, if you could answer just one question: does being fat make you any less dangerous? Me, my opinion, I don't think so. I first heard about you from Eric Haney's book Inside Delta Force when it first came out, and I've always dreamed of attending one of your training. I believe you should write and publish a book of your time in the military. An experienced legitimate warrior like yourself is a rarity nowadays. Thanks for your videos.

No its not the life expectancy, I'm saying its the extremely dangerous missions they go on is the reason they have lower life expectancy compared to the SF or Delta. I base my opinion on the difficulty of the missions. Hell the 101st has a hard job too because they know they are the backup so nobody will come for them if they get up S%&* Creek.

Really great sincere video. Thanks for sharing this. The flip side (and I'm sure I'm not the only one to say this) is eating right. It is killer hard to eat less than you want, and eat healthy less tasty foods ESPECIALLY when you're on the road when you're always eating out. Restaurants were set up to sell you food that makes you full and happy, not that leaves you hungry and healthy. I sincerely hope that the other comments on here are also encouraging, you deserve it and should get it given not just what you've been through but having the balls to come out and say and show this. My 2c.
@wimvaneldik8004

Being hungry is not healthy. Being hungry destroys your muscles in any physical demanding task. It's not about how humgry you feel yourself or how not hungry you feel yourself, it's about what you eat. When i'm eating burgers i can eat a lot, but don't feel full. My pro tip: eat bread. Just plain old bread. Put a bit of chees on it or maybe a small slice of meat. Heck put nutella on it. You eat a few and you are full. You eat a burger you are full. But the bread is a lot and a lot better. Bread won't make you fat. What you put on it will make you fat. So dont put a lot on there. Whole day bread with one hot meal(no pizza, vegetables with maybe 200grams meat max) and you will feel full.
@whatfor5
@whatfor5 9 лет назад
Wim van Eldik Actually there have been more than a few well researched studies which show caloric restriction will increase your life expectancy, and that means feeling hungry. They are an extreme, and not one I would recommend, but the truth is given how much we typically eat and are used to eating, feeling hungry is just a part of dieting. Bread, particularly ones not made with whole grains, are actually not recommendable for dieting. They are basically empty calories, and on top of that have a fairly high glycemic index. When you're dieting, this is the opposite of what you want, what you want is high nutritional density foods while limiting calories. I really wish RU-vid allowed links to citations......
@SavageArms357
@SavageArms357 9 лет назад
Wim van Eldik Hmm...Personally I'd say to do the exact opposite, and nearly eliminate all breads from your diet in favor of natural fats, meat, and veggies. And if you do have bread, to make sure it's not from modern Dwarf wheat, but instead Einkorn wheat, or barley. The Adkins diet has been pretty proven to work, I've seen it first hand. So you shouldn't need to be hungry to be healthy :) But hey, that's all just my 0.02¢.

Hi Larry. Weight issues are something that most athletics who's sport deals with a lot of muscle mass tend to have after they retire. Unfortunately it is the price they pay for the dedication in building up that muscle mass. For our SF heroes it's the same. You body just shows the marks of a life of service. From Ireland I salute you and thank you for your service. Respectfully. Paul.
