Things were different back in 82. I was 15 and I decided to buy some clippers and buzz all the hair off my head. The cool thing, at the time, was to have long hair, preferably, in a mullet. So I went the other way and got rid of my mullet hair. It made me a pariah, and I was accosted by strangers and got into several fights. I either got called a "faggot" or a "Nazi" before the fight started. When I got home, my parents grounded me for being a skinhead. I told them that there are no skinheads in our little Oklahoma town of 40,000 people, and that I was just a guy without a mullet. The next day my dad apologized and said that if he had come home with hair like that when he was my age, his dad would have probably raised his allowance. It was like everyone hated me as soon as they saw my hair or lack there of. To this day, I have yet to see a barber. All I need are some shears ;) Peace
Times have changed a bit, I'm in my 30s and still shave my head. I get asked almost every night out "Born and raised?" or "Where are you from" and I know the next question or comments going to be some ignorant racist garbage. One of my friends told me to just ignore ignorant people because they're not worth the time. When I explained how they approach and I have to shut it down harshly or I'll end up hearing some racists life story they said "I never thought about it like that, yeah it makes sense" At least where I live people are way less likely to be openly racist now, but if they think you might be then all the freaks come out of the woodwork.
I've been stabbed before, in the ass cheek of all places, and I just thought I'd been punched. I said to my mate "That idiot just punched me in the butt, what the fuck?" My mate started laughing and said "Nah he stabbed you in the butt and it's bleeding a fair bit. Might want to get yourself up to the butt doctor for some butt stitches!" My mate thinks he's a fucking comedian
i know im a marxist too and to us everything can be drawn into a political context. we try to understand existence down to the atom and thats our politics. its scientific. most ppl dont think like that, thats fine.
I saw Rancid in 1995, sober too, n' I got started not even a yr previous. And it was such, SUCH a fun memory. Man we danced. Man, 21. My first car, fresh out USMC.
Fishing line is actually a pretty good thing to use for suture material. It's very similar to the actual suture material you'd put in skin (i.e. synthetic monofilament). You don't wanna use something like thread because bacteria can wick into the wound between the fibres. His problem was almost certainly that there was a bunch of shit in the wound and he didn't flush it first. If he'd done that he could have been fine.
I love Lars but "working class" is political itself and even OG skinhead reggae artists were involved in politics heavy. "oI bAdMaN wE wOrKiN cLaSs" was far from their only thing 😂
Working class isnt inherently political its just a class of people based on their income. Working class people often dont even pay much attention to politics mainly because theyre to busy working. However politics effects the working class most of all. Punk, ska ect was actually a way to open the working classes eyes to politics to people who otherwise are uniterested.
For the term _working class_ to be anything more than a meaningless label, it has to come with a certain degree og class consciousness. And class consciousness is definitely inherently political.
onlylovecansaveus to be fair the real punks are probably ppl that spend their lives in prison, are ppl who have assaults maybe murders on their record. He probably saw a lot more violence when he was younger, but ya I mean once the band got big and he got a level of success and money, I would think he distanced himself from that life/lifestyle as much he can. That’s what you’d want to do tho, why would he want to be in that life anymore
@@tdog1983-v6c to be fair, what you think and what is true are not the same. You can say "probably" this and "probably" that, all day. But us good guys, know who we are. Not out here making music for the masses. Gtfo with your consumerism.
onlylovecansaveus wtf are u talking about bro. I like some rancid sings, that’s why I listen to them sometimes. And who’s listening to your music. No one. Cmon man. Grow up. No One gives a sht about u or your music. And I doubt very music Lars gives a sht what u think.
@@Millwall77 I agree, but the foundations of the song are still there...after all the drug, alcohol abuse and time since this occurred, I'm not surprised memories are foggy on this.
I have all the respect in the world for Lars my encounter with him was sooo cool. an He made me feel welcome at Warp Tour. Dude is a class act. Nothing but love for Lars from me.
Sorry to say this, cos I love rancid and lars' solo work, but he comes off as a bit of a poser. First the mohawk and that uk 82 with all the spikes and stuff look, and then changed it to the skinhead/casual look with shaved/short hair, checkered shirts and doc martens. And that black wool hat he seems to always be wearing when filmed or photographed. It's a little annoying, tbh.
And in between that he was kind of a biker/Lemmy wannabe. Yes, you go thru phases in life but you cant become a skinhead in your forties and expect to get away with it.
@@kosher8720how is someone who denies the very roots of the subculture, a member of the subculture? They're not. Nazis just take the look because It makes them look tough.
There was a party house of punks we used to go to in the nineties. Punks from all over the world seemed to come visit. Every month there was exotic people that were into the lifestyle. So these boneheads started harassing a girl and the biggest dude that ran the party stood up for her and when they got physical he tossed the guy out. So one day they showed up with an entire crew and found the big guy that stood up for her and they took a sledgehammer to his skull. I was not there for that but a good friend of mine told me how he took his shirt off and wrapped it around his head and saved his life. Last I heard the big guy was forever mentally altered and the house was condemned by the city to be demolished anyway so it become abandoned. It was such a shame how all of us looking to have a good time goofing off got assaulted by hate looking for a fight. Out come the wolves I guess.
That's awful. I'm in Oklahoma and I've never met a white supremacist. I've been all over the US and it's hard to imagine a sub culture of white supremacists manifesting out there in I'm assuming California? What decade did that happen? Are they like, idk, I dunno how to even ask it. Like, what's their aesthetic? How do they find each other on the streets? In prison, I kinda get it. But like... idk. Those tales of boneheads always confused me. Then again, a lot of stuff confuses me. Lol. It seems to me like when people find out im a Native American with, like, prowess, idk, they kind tighten up their behavior and just drop all the nonsense. But, like, in Oklahoma, being Native isn't really all that unique. Like im in my 30s and I've got some experiences of my own but like in the 80s when punks fought with nazis.... like, that just doesn't make sense to me. I'm like that sounds like organized crime, why didn't anybody bust it up? We don't really take much shit in OK. It's a little different. Lol.
@@lejay7511 I only got caught off guard by them very few times in life. It was rare but those few times were always an awful fight. Way back in high school was my first experience on a bus to school. I was maybe 15 and was already wearing leather denim and studs to protect myself from the street violence that was going on in the area. One of them started poking fun and I was not in the mood so when he shoved me I knocked him over for daring to put a hand on me and half the bus lunged at me. So I used the kid as a shield and his tshirt had a swastika on it so I assume they were young boneheads. My leather and stud jacket made good armor against the kicks and lunges. When I made it to then front of the bus I grabbed a fire extinguisher to unleash on them but it didn't work. They chased me into a nearby resturaunt and threatended to kill my entire family. The dean had to convince me to come back to school and I eventually did but I never rode a bus again. I got up an hour earlier just to walk and I always carried my cheaper guitar as a self defense weapon if needed. I have no idea what happened to them but hopefully some form of karma. The worst one was many years later I was almost 30. I went to a local metal show and we were all drinking and having a great time until this one huge dude covered in muscles and scars like all he knew was a battlefield started elbow smashing everyone in the forehead knocking them down instantly. I was drinking whiskey and when he came at me I lunged down instinctivly into his gut and launched him up over me out of the crowed towards the bouncer. I figured the bouncer would handle it but instead this big dude came over and slapped my nose so hard it broke sideways and got blood all over the floor. He had a big swastika tatood on his neck. The bouncer did nothing. Everyone just hoped he would leave and he did after kicking everyones ass. The owner of the bar asked if I needed an ambulance but I figured I just needed another shot of whiskey so I wouldn't feel myself about to break my nose back into place. All I knew is I had work in the morning and I still made it in on time. The hate is terrible and toxic. I don't want any part of it. It was the Boston area which is full of various culture and that's cool good but sometimes that variety doesn't like all the variety. People man. I can't make sense of it. I just wanted to enjoy music with anyone who just wants to enjoy music.
@@tendrosstoodross2976I don't see how songs railing against Thatcher and the Tories could be considered "right wing." Their song "We Rule, OK" features the lyric: "Margaret Thatcher the stupid old bitch/Takes from the poor and gives to the rich" They hated Margaret Thatcher as much as Billy Bragg or Crass.
Neonazis adopted a the shaved head look and unsuccessfully tried to take over the skin/oi scene, but they successfully confused outsiders and future generations of punks and scenesters.
Running to my room in the middle of the night to escape the wrath of a Dane is something I'm all too familiar with. My friends thought it was a fucking riot though lmao, especially when my mom started yelling in english. Something about her light accent got really bad when she tried raising her voice. My grandmother was the funniest when she got mad though, even my mom and I would both do impressions of her behind her back lmao
❤❤❤Laurel Aitken was Boss SKINHEAD & GODFATHER OF SKA: Nazis always steal other peoples' stuff & try & slap the Nazi name on it. They even stole the swastika, Jamaican Skinhead n NAME, & NORSE/VIKING MYTHOLOGY: none of these items have anything to do with Nazis. Thanks so much for sharing❤❤❤. Love, Hugs, Blessings, Lib❤❤❤
My friend got stabbed 13 times and didnt know it until we ran up and told him because he was wearing a white tshirt and we saw blood blooming all over. He was still fighting. The stabber was 16 years old, and his 12 year old foster brother watched the whole thing.
I too had black girlfriends that were in the scene. I never had any trouble in Berkeley and perhaps it's because Oakland is right there, but in San Fran you'd see Bonehead's pretty frequently. However, with bands like DK playing almost nightly, you had a lot of backing with a shit ton of punks before, during and after gigs. I still use my punk moniker Kid SKAnk and I'm now 58 y/o. Those were the days.
Boneheads (Nazis) in San Francisco in the early 80s? Sounds weird considering the city is associated with hippies, but hey it's still crazy. Seeing Dead Kennedys during their prime must have been a treat.
Yeah man... you gotta clean the wound first lol. I cut my finger really bad with trimming shears and put super glue on it but after a few days and it turning green and purple I had to soak it in acetone to get the glue off lol, it cleaned it really well too! Felt like fire was injected into my body but I fixed it and put butterflies on it! Lol probably should've gone to the hospital but I was very drunk.... My Pops even asked my Mom if I was ok bc of all the blood in the garage and on the garage fridge Lol! Clean your wounds kids!
Lars waited until he was rich to be a skinhead. lol pure nonsense. Lars still confusing skinhead and rudeboy. Hence him saying it’s his opinion and not fact. Tell us all about his factory life? Skins are working class.

Especially if he'd already glued the wound. Plastic surgeons use a type of superglue to minimize scarring instead of stitches. You only need one or the other. Also, go to the damn hospital, you don't know how deep the stab wound is and could very well bleed out internally.
Yes! I did enjoy this when I watched the entire interview! He’s right about the politics and the misnomer of “Skinhead’s” name. They were not really Right-wing, unless you want to designate them far-Right fascists, which might be accurate especially the current Skinheads in Germany now that relish the term “Nazis.” What is great about this story was his reference to his getting stabbed during those drinking-drugging years. I love how he’s telling this story with no grimace at all; about how he his brother’s sewing him up with no anesthesia, the subsequent infection, (he could have died)…well- there’s the pain!!! Hell, the stab wound wouldn’t hurt as much as the sewing it up with a fishing line!!! And, then taking it out!!! lol He tells this so matter-of-factly - just crazy. You gotta love this guy! He so passionate and genuine! I love the way way he talks about his son, too. What a life! Loved the Ramones stories, too. During my 1983 San Francisco one man show, lots of society types were there. Then, a very tall, young guy with long black hair, walked by me and said, “Nice work man.” “Thank you.” John Pence the gallery owner asked me later, “Did you see Johnny Ramone?” I said, “Who?” He said, “Johnny Ramone! ….of the Ramones?” lol “Oh! That’s who that was!” lol It’s a Small world after all.
Get a clue. Lars is fashion. He went from supposed skin to punk to biker back to punk to skin. . I doubt he ever had a real hands on job from what he says. I used to respect him but as i get older i seen though it all. Playing music is far from a job. He knows nuthing of the working class struggle he's a multi millionaire.

So basically, we Skinheads are appropriating black culture, and cultural appropriation is modern day colonization, so I guess we’re also in a way perpetuating systemic racism or something… idk wtf I’m talking about. I remember running into some Neo-Nazis once. And they were pretty cool actually they didn't talk about their beliefs or anything. They shared a blunt with me and we talked about horror movies we liked from the 70s and 80s.
I had a teacher in high school that told me a story about him throwing a cinder block into a group of Neo Nazis at an AFI show sometime in the mid 90s.
Yeah because those guys flock to gay band's shows. I'll bet you ate that all up didn't ya? Didn't question where the cinder block came from in some shitty dive bar.
