Seriously, how can you hate the guy? I'm very grateful for Lars, without him we'd be missing out on some of the best music that's come out in the last 35 years.
Yeah, exactly. Lars Ulrich is a very intelligent man. Brains and success are traits many failed bands/musical acts lacked in the industry. The four horsemen are truly a force to be reckoned with. Thank God for them as unreal humans and the music they play for the millions of fans. Long live Metallica 💖💖💖💖
It's impossible to hate Lars Ulrich, sure he likes to talk but there is nothing about the man to hate. If you hate Lars Ulrich you need to take a long look in the mirror.
Interviewer was actually really good and tossed some great bones Lars’ way. If you see a great interview, ALWAYS remember there is a great interviewer behind it. He knew his stuff but was not a total fan boy. He did his job really well.
This has to be one of the best interviews ever made to a Metallica member, great questions, not the same thing asked over and over again in several other interviews; also, you get to see Lars being able to elaborate his answers while the interviewer listens. Great stuff!.

I may be in the minority here but I never held anger over the Napster situation and Metallica. Napster was legitimately stealing music from the artists without permission or copy-write. This was a new thing at the time. Metallica's reaction to this I personally thought was always honorable. It's ironic how the same musicians these days SCREAMING how they deserve to get paid for their songs and their performances are the same ones who like to bash Lars for taking on Napster.
One has to feel pretty sympathetic about the Napster situation from their point of view. I mean, they wrote all their music and mixed and produced their first four albums themselves. So, they put a lot of work in to their own efforts and yet a bunch of empty suit executives were taking a bigger cut from record sales and concert tours. Now that Metallica has control of their own brand, they don't have to worry about the empty suits taking most of the profit of their hard work.
I never thought Lars/Metallica were wrong for going after Napster, it was the execution that I didn't like so much, he should never have gone after the fans (i.e. had pages and pages with usernames of people who download the music), he should have strictly attacked the organization. Prior to online music sharing, the underground tape trade was how MANY people found Metallica in the 1st place as and Metallica encouraged that.

The word means: legitimately adverb 1. in a way that conforms to the law or to rules. Stealing cannot be legitimate by definition. It is not possible to legitimately steal something.

I feel like it's time to forgive Lars. He has really shaped up his playing on this recent album and tour and he clearly cares a ton about the fans and the songs. He's not the same guy we all hated around 2004.
Naa not really, he can't play hardly anything decent live still,...and here we are in 2018. I just listened to the Justice demo tapes that came out with the box set and woah he was seriously on point and doing a very respectable job, even on the double kick. That was when he shaped his playing up,....not now at all.
@@morsteen His last live performances I seen last year, he was much better and on time with his beats, this wasnt the 2003-2013 lazy lars but I haven't seen them live then, the snare, bass drum, tempo and double bass were on point!
You can tell by watching this interview is why Lars has a networth of 200 Million, and by that you can tell he is the creative and intellectual force behind this band.
I hated lars for a long time, but then I realised his abrasiveness is what pushes the band forward. It seems obvious at this point that the band would of dissolved in 1992 if it weren't for Lars.
Noticed the same. He was to the point, kept it on track without being abrupt or perfunctory, and gracefully brought up challenging topics. Very well done. Contrast this with some of the interviewers over the years, and this guy makes them look like amateurs.
The years have humbled Lars a bit. This guy is awesome. Everyone complains he sucks but a dude who’s only been in one band his ENTIRE life must be doing something right.

a lot of ppl seem to forget that Lars was the one doing the behind the seems work getting Metallica where they are today. also, the dude is a hell of an arranger. James writes the riffs but Lars always put the songs together.

Many people say a lot of things about Lars Ulrich. Sometimes it seems you can't see a single comment section that doesn't talk down on him in one way or another. Whether there's truth to those comments or not, at the bottom of it all he just strikes me as a genuinely humble, friendly and curious guy. As an interviewee, he really seems to dig down and develop his answers rather than just resorting to automode and giving cookie cutter answers. I have to say the same for the interviewer, asking questions we don't hear every day and actually following up on Lars' answers, not just asking a series of questions and going "done". Q on CBC, that was a fantastic interview. Well done.
I love Lars he is the best drummer,producer ever. haters are just jealous. Him and Hetfield are my inspiration, their music saved me, from horrible moments throughout my life
C30 Nation his drumming on the first 3 albums was ok. His drumming on justice was awesome, now he's good but not amazing. Defiantly better then people act
I'm not a hater and I respect him but he is just too bad when he play live, he can't keep his tempo he make too many unnecessary fills and he can't even play his own song "One" double bass part
This is a really good interview. Lars has clearly calmed and evened out his brashness over the years, he seems much more relaxed and down to earth than he's ever been. Its really nice to see him being this way now.

Lars/Metallica were right about Napster. they took a huge PR hit for saying what a lot of bands were thinking at the time, but I think time has shown that they knew illegal downloading was going to change the music industry dramatically. Even streaming isn't a perfect answer, since bands don't get paid much, but at least it's tracked and helps bands establish themselves, build up a legit fanbase, etc. for real though, buy the full albums of bands you love
I never gave up on Lars & I'm a guitar player. He truly is amoung most so it's hard for people to understand him not knowing. Bout Time you die hard fans or even fans & haters to finally understand the intensity & never look back always look forward 😎😎😎
Is Lars the best metal drummer? Hell no. But when it comes to song arrangements, he rises to the task time and time again. I truly don’t think Metallica would be where they are today without Lars
About the discussion of what type of music people today listen to, I don't think that rock or metal is not that less popular as people say. Metallica's new album wouldn't be selling if there wasn't an audience for that type of music. When there are all kinds of teens, not just boys, but many GIRLS, playing guitar and drums to old and new rock and metal bands on RU-vid that are better than teens decades ago, then there absolutely still has to be a strong love and popularity for metal. It's just overshadowed by the hiphop media.
It is way less popular among young people compared to what it was in the 60s-90s. Now a days ask 10 random teens or 20 somethings if they listen to and support hard rock or metal I bet only 1 out of 10 will say yes.
TheFutureKing Are the numbers of listeners really different? Metal has always came after popular music. Back in the day, more people listened to Michael Jackson and Madonna. You also have other music listeners such as country. That group just has turned into hip hop and rap. It could be the type of people listening has changed. Where it used to be that the metal head was the guy blasting his car radio, now it's the guy blasting hip hop that makes them more noticeable where you think all young guys now are listening to rap, hip hop or R&B. The metalheads and rockers are still there, but maybe less noticable without long hair and aren't blowing their subwoofers out to Metallica.
Arthur S Hard Rock and or Metal used to be very popular among young people especially in the in the 60s,70s, and 80s. Somewhere in the late 90s early 2000s it changed to where the MOST popular music among young people is Rap and POP.
Metal has always been used to being "the underground", and the funny thing about undergrounds, is that the following is a lot bigger than one might think. It's not nearly as publicized as the media fueled genres out there, but it is still very much alive and well. To this day I still run into people who remember me as a death metal vocalist back in 1991. Death metal itself is still viable, and a lot of my friends are still playing some 30 years later. A lot of us may have cut our hair, and might even dress in suits, but that heart has never died. A couple months ago I had the pleasure of going to see Slayer, Anthrax, and Death Angel here in Pittsburgh. My first REAL metal concert since the Lollapalooza that Metallica played in the mid nineties. The vast cross-section of ages was incredible. There was everyone from 12 year olds and their metal parents, to grandpas and grandmas. The most pit was alive and well and just about every voice in there knew the lyrics. It was one of the greatest things it has ever been my privilege to witness, especially more so at 46 years old. And you better believe I MOSHED!
I guess it also depends where you live. Geography plays a big role . Up toward San Francisco CA, the metal community is alive and well. Down in SoCal where I'm at is a completely different story. People don't even know who Zeppelin or Metallica are. It's sad, honestly. Getting shows together down here sucks for the local metal & hard rock bands.
fantastic interview, lars is always articulate with his answers and this guy provided the soundtrack to most of my life and I thank him, amazing live show just fantastic overall to provide inspiration what hard work and imagination can do, especially since he pretty much willed metallica into a real band from his dreams of making it, and succeeded more then his wildest dreams could have imagined... hard work pays off

Lars, please start using your Old Artstar II black and white kit. It looks and SOUNDS sooo much better than your current kits. Hell, even your silver sparkle kit from load -reload sounds much better than your current kit. Bring back the bell brass snare!
EQ-smoove i'm not even a fan. Rigid metalheads who can't accept change make me sick. It has to be pure fucking METAL and THRASH, otherwise it sucks. I've had numerous conversations like this, and it's always the same thing: METAAAAL! It's not about music, it's whether it's true metal or not. Truly boring.
I mean when Metallica finally runs their course,it'll be sad considering that metal today has to be represented by bands like Periphery (who have a few good members but terrible songwriting). So definitely value Metallica while they're still killing it
I like Periphery, and The Contortionists, and The Dillinger Escape Plan and others, just like I loved Metallica when I was younger. I think there is so much music out there, it's impossible not to find what you're looking for. There is always someone out there doing it.
nice interview. My friends twitted to get me into Metallica in the 80s and i didn't get into it until the mid 2000s. I don't know why it took me so long but I love Metallica now and this kind of interview helps a late fan like me catch up.

when i was 14, the first song i ever downloaded was on napster, "I dissapear". May not have been how lars wanted me to be introduced to metallica, but if it wasnt for that who knows if ide even be a metal head today
6:55 he admits that Metallica isn’t really driven anymore. That’s not shocking, they’re like impossibly rich and have been for a long time now. Definitely richer than any other metal band out there.

While touring in the states supporting Kid Rock in '99 I had the opportunity to meet Lars in New York. As I drummer I told him he had always been one of my favorites. He replied with "sorry about your luck". I found him to be one of the nicest most down to earth people I had ever met in the business.
He played on a couple of demos and a few gigs, from 1981-1982 I would hardly say hes the original bassist tbh. Bob rock has played more bass for them and hes not considered a metallica bass player.
Dayne Pennington Ron had played with James for a while before that with Leather Charm and other various bands. He was there when James originally wrote songs from Kill Em All (Metal Militia, Motorbreath, Hit the Lights). He is no doubt their original bassist. Least skilled? Yes.
For me, Lars Ulrich was always the visionary among drummers. Of course he's not the greatest drummer in the world, but he had an incredible drive and that's something you also need to make it. Fearless dedication and incredible self-belief. It's the same with singers. A technically good singer doesn't necessarily make a great artist. You can make it, but even singers who don't sing *every* note the way it's written on the music sheet can still have a career, because authenticity is what the audience likes. Of course, when I watch some Metallica live videos and hear Lars playing the drums, I sometimes think "Dude, you've been playing "Enter Sandman" for thirty years now and there are still tempo fluctuations?". On that point, Lars got a little lazy and relied too much on his confidence, but I dare say Metallica wouldn't have become this institution without him.
I can't believe how good Hardwired is and how much I like it. It will be a sad day when these fellas call it a day. I've not seen them live nearly enough.
Lars, he of the beautiful manners, said he was most interested in ACDCs 'overdose' song. I met a load of Belfast ACDC fans at a festival in Sligo, who turned me onto ACDC + said Overdose was the one that won them over. It's the same for me - it's just brilliant! Thank You Lars xxxx. Good man
