I usually buy the 4 which pays 2:1(1.67% house edge), but not sure why to lay the 4 as the house edge is slightly higher at (2.44%), but I get it, its a hedge against the 7 being rolled in which case you win half your bet as you have to lay 2:1. I know craps is a negative expectation game and Anthony is right, you have go through a negative bet to get to a true odds bet. Even if you take free odds bet, you still have to go through the come out roll (,1.41% house edge) compared to the don't pass according to Micheal Shakelford(wizard of odds) is slightly better bet(1.36%). seems like if you are going to play craps, the best way is knowing every single bet on the table and the odds on every bet and try to make the best one. but in the end, the casino has an beatable edge on every bet. I loved The Mirage. One of my favorite memories is spending a weekend in a suite with my late sister. She had room service for the first time, was enthralled with the animal habitat and dolphins and I even hit a $4000 Royal. Super good time. And just a note on progressives: Stayed at Paris specifically to play their $1 denom progressive VP machines. Hurried to check in and take luggage to the room, only to find someone had just hit the Royal! Decided to play the machines anyway and $25 in I hit the Royal for $4030! Even the floor clerk commented on how someone had just hit.
