More than that, because a lot of it is privatized, they pretty much are stealing money from your pocket to keep more people than is needed incarcerated. Helping the people who have fallen on hard times, in the end, always is a gain for the society as a whole, it reduces crime and many of this people are returning to normal lives before they are completely mentally broken by the desperate situation they are in.

This what happens when 60% of the country are living in poverty whether they are lucky enough to be employed or not (the working poor ) , and the top 1% of the population control most of the wealth in whole country . If you do a population wealth comparison of all the country`s in the world , US is way way down the list , this is what happens when the little people (the low income earners and those in poverty are treated like dirt . Which does beg the question , is why some voters would pick a rich dude who`s probably never done a hard days work in life and hates losers and really probably couldnt care less for them (unless their is some tv coverage in it for him ) to be their leader .... irony ?

Same here in California. Homeless people overrun SD, Sacramento, SF and LA. A lot of them are healthy, others are drug addicts (I spent time with one guy and I sympathize with people like him) but others are just out from prison also and the streets are the only option. It’s a complex problem but they (State and Local) need to find and FUND a solution to this without over taxing citizens. Also the homeless need to realize it out right as land, business, and home owners not to have them on our property.

"how are you gonna find a homeless to pay the fine?" Well sadly, what happens is: (1) if a homeless manages to begin a reinsertion into normal life (let's say with the support of social workers accompanying him into finding a home, a job, reconnecting with family); (2) then, "surprise", all the accumulated tickets and fines, and their associated accumulated interests, find their way to the new address of a person barely standing, trying to start a normal life, how crazy can our society be? Yes, this is indeed what happens elsewhere, in other states (US) or provinces (Canada)... Stop criminalizing homelessness. Go arrest the rich thieves instead! the one owning the mansion with 21 empty rooms and not paying taxes...

So a boom in Las Vegas casino development in the early 2000's brought people to the area for low-paying jobs (many living in trailers because housing was scarce), then the housing boom gave them homes they couldn't afford, then they lost those homes and their jobs in the 2007 crash (MGM shares went from $90 to $2), then tent cities went up (because where were they going to go, having lost everything), and now they want to make them criminals, because that's the only thing left to do to them. I know that's what happened because I lived there during all that, except for this latest thing. Nevada, the place to go if you want to gamble away your dignity.

This reminds me of the law in Hungary.. putting homeless people in jail - there the law exists already since about 2 years.

on the Homeless topic i am not surprised, the USA never fixes anything. The US solution to everything is ignore it, pretend its gone, or make it worse. I was back in my home state last year after spending 20 years overseas and virtually nothing has changed, all the same buildings, and no upgrades. That is how the USA is.... sadly

HAHAHA.... "Land of the free" they say ! I feel sorry for the homeless ofcause. But as a european hearing news about the US on a daily basis, i just can't take this country serious anymore. Just because of their places in the industry and markets they get away with pretty much anything they accuse other countries of... .

A lot of people still have not recovered from the 2008 recession, which exasperated the homeless problem. The rich got richer after the crash, but the poor got way more poorer.

It's actually not the same thing, since prisoners can be conscripted as virtually free labor for the governor's business associates and justified bloated police budgets.

If the government bans homelessness then start intruding on government infrastructure Public library, national museum stadiums etc are the best place for shelter Enter white house, capitol hill etc are awesome place for homeless people

They say my country is a third world country. My country have more population that the whole western world. Most people have avg income lesser than 4$ but,They have shelter/slums to live.Showing how rich or beautiful places doesn't make a country great again.Admit failure and solve all problems.literally my eyes are wet. Please don't let those people suffer in the street or take legal action, they suffered alot in their life. #PEACE

Yeah, I guess it’s that new LV camping on the streets law doesn’t just affect homeless people, but also people camping out on streets to get first in the line for tickets, electronics, sneakers, or other stuff. Somewhat agree though, if you make a law against homelessness, you better prepare a solution to the homelessness situation first.

Dear Mr Noah, You have grown into a fine comic and media personality and have achieved the American Dream. You have a pleasant demeanor and very sympathetic way of making fun of people in the news. But now you have to take what you have learned back to your country. South Africa needs you and now you have what it takes to turn your country around. It will mean giving up fame and fortune and a lot more I’m sure, but you owe it to your country to go back home and help them get out of the sinkhole they are in. You have the power to do that. Make South Africa great again!
