The Conservation of Sculpture & Objects Studio (CSOS) is the first company in the USA to utilize environmentally safe "Green" laser technology for large scale art restoration projects. This video shows laser cleaning of a bronze eagle on the North plaque of the WWI Memorial in Scoville Park, located in Oak Park, IL. This is a precisely calibrated laser being used by an experienced and trained CSOS laser technician.
The Scoville Park WWI Memorial restoration project involves laser cleaning bronze elements, stone cleaning, stone repairs, foundation reconstruction, and overall stabilization of the monument. This project started in 2009 and will conclude in 2010.
From architectural structures and monuments, to small artifacts,
CSOS specializes in using the most advanced
techniques in art restoration and conservation
to ensure that works of art withstand the tests of time.
We have restored works of Art from around the world for over 20 years.

I'm a metals conservator working in the UK and I have to be honest the use of the laser in this instance looks to be completely inappropriate. The video appears to be showing the laser stripping of the natural patina (the green layer) that the bronze has developed, this exposes new metal to the elements and in the long term is detrimental to the sculpture, particularly if this treatment is repeated (because lets be honest, how often do these thing go unmaintained even when the long term care instructions are given). The better option would have been to leave this patina in place, wash down the bronze and them protect it using waxes, if the client wanted the bronze to appear 'foundry brown' then this could have been achieved using coloured waxes rather than stripping of the surface. I hope I am wrong and the video is misleading

You bring up a good point, but if you notice in the last little bit of the video, they show the Eagle and the background lettering both cleaned, and then added with some protective coating. I would like to say I have as much experience as you on the matter, but it is just an observation.

CryptoDriver The patina or rust aren't external contamination, they are converted base material. Removing the corrosion, letting more form, and repeating will reduce the object to dust in short order.
@RobertSzasz
@RobertSzasz 7 лет назад
***** the corrosion products usually slow the corrosion of metal underneath, and all sorts of surface protection is available (paints, waxes, etc..) so what is optimal for a conservation (no loss of material, reversible restoration) isn't always the best solution, removing corrosion then treating with something to protect the metal surface usually is the way to go, and with regular maintenance damage can be halted and the metal protected indefinitely.. It's a combination of neglect and treatment every decade or so that will destroy an object in less than 50 years that could last thousands.

You could take a couple of minutes to look at their website to see what they do. It's plainly visible and that's how long it took me to find out they work with the standards set out by the AIC code of ethics and guidelines for practice. I assumed the video was a blurb on the new uses of laser. Not a complete how to video.

Thank you for posting this. I just looked at an article which states that some form of graffiti removal has begun. I hope they are not blasting the sculpture. There are several conservation techniques for removing graffiti from a surface. We regularly remove graffiti like this from metal and stone sculptures. It is possible to use a laser to remove only the graffiti and not damage the original surface. In fact, we have used lasers to remove graffiti from prehistoric pictographs in Texas.

Welcome to the 21st century. We have the technology to restore such items to their practically original state of beauty along with the technology to preserve them with protective coatings that did not exist when the items were first created. People probably paid little attention to this item when it was covered with patina. Now that it has been strikingly restored, it is an eye-catcher, and a renewed honor to WWI veterans.

Actually, this is a bronze sculpture. Yet the following principles apply to copper as well: Laser ablation effectively removes the corrosion products from the surface and leaves a passive oxidized layer on the surface which inhibits further corrosion. This eagle was given a protective microcrystalline wax coating that prevents further oxidation. As long as the protective coating remains intact, the sculpture will not corrode. Well maintained bronzes are known to be stable for decades.

You are absolutely correct. Safety first! Yes this is a chemical free treatment, but the laser operator should take care to not breath in corrosion products (or other materials). There is also a ventilation system, which is not seen by the camera, which generates continuous airflow to move ablated particles away from the conservator.
@gregsmith2407

The operator appeared to be wearing a filter respirator (purple plastic canisters) that should trap any hazardous dust before it gets inhaled. Looks like good safety practices are being followed.

I think a lot of you are missing the point regarding the application of using a laser to remove the build up of crap over the years. This eagle can now be protected and retain its original shine. What I am interested in is not preservation work but removing old paint and rust from cars etc. So what I am interested in is costs. Traditional V new technology. Thanks for the video.

It's not "dirty", it's oxidized. Bronze has copper in it, and with time it turns green, and in that state it is called patina. You see that same green in many old building metal roofs too. The Statue of Liberty is green because it has been left to look like that on purpose. In fact, when it had its restoration, the new replacement copper pieces were artificially oxidized with chemical agents to accelerate the process. If someone cleaned that statue to shine, everybody would go nuts.

Do you know how much quicker you could clean this if you didn't wobble the laser about - its not a scrubbing brush! Just move it slowly and the laser will ablate the oxidisation far more efficiently. Moving it as you do minimises the surface's laser exposure time and thus reduces cleaning.

Iron is an element, and steel is a very useful, reasonably pure form of iron.Rust is iron oxide, the corrosion product of iron. You can only make iron oxide from iron and oxygen; you can't make it out of copper or tin, so copper and bronze can never rust. Copper andbronze can corrode or tarnish,

If the correct laser is properly calibrated and the operator knows what he/she is doing then there is absolutely no damage to the underlying layer. In this case the laser is calibrated to absorb into and ablate away the corrosion layer, and not effect the intact metal below. No other tool can match this level of precision. Yet it is possible to melt a surface if one just points and shoots a laser at an object without a proper understanding of optoelectronics and laser matter interactions.

The sculpture, usually a casting, should speak for itself regardless of the surface oxidation. To my mind there is no more regal oxidation than the blue-green weather surface of the sheet copper used to clothe the Statute of Liberty. Copper is a very beautiful metal when buffed and polished but when it starts the full surface oxidation process it adds a certain timeless regal look to the piece no matter how small or large.
