My Y-400 laser has been getting a workout lately cranking out beer caddies for the current craft show season. I wanted to share my process for making these caddies and hopefully inspire you guys to give this simple project a try!
This project uses 4mm (5/32") and 5mm (1/4") PureBond Maple plywood sheets which are available from Home Depot online. See link below (not sponsored or affiliate). I chose to use these sheets because they cut really nicely on the laser cutter. I believe the reason they carry these is for the Glowforge community. This is also the reason they are 12" x 19" which is the standard size for Glowforge materials.
I used a foam roller to roll the stain onto the plywood sheets. I then wiped off the excess. This is the fastest method I have found for batching out these sheets. It seems to give a good consistent finish after they dry. If anyone has found a fast method for staining plywood sheets please leave a comment below!
Two 12" x 19" 5mm sheets and one 12" x 19" 4mm sheet are required to make each caddy. I have provided a link below where you can purchase the files I used for this project from my Etsy store. The project files include the LightBurn files I used in the video.
I used a small pin nailer with 3/4" nails and translucent wood glue for assembly. The nails help hold the caddy together while it dries. I added some bottle openers I found on Amazon (affiliate link below). There is an optional small circle included in the cut files that helps cover up the protruding screw from the bottle opener. You could also find a smaller screw or grind off the excess.
Hope you give this project a try! Thanks for watching!

This reminded me of building a gingerbread house! I loved the detail of the opener on the side AND the open windows to show the beer labels. Organize your brewski's, People!

Hi! Congratulations!! Great job!! Your CNC Co2, did you build it yourself?

Yes I did

Nice project. Do you ever wish you would have built the Y1200?
@acwrightdesign
@acwrightdesign 2 года назад
Thanks! No. The reason is materials. At least here in Nebraska I’m struggling to find good laser cutter materials in sizes large enough to even use the full Y-400 size bed. The best I have found is the PureBond stuff from Home Depot which only comes in 12 x 19 sheets. If you have any ideas let me know!.

@@acwrightdesign interesting consideration I hadn't thought of. What about 1/4" MDF sheets or 1/8 hardboard? Home depot should have those. Depends what you make I guess. And if you just want to engrave on something (like a sign) then I guess you can use any thickness plywood.
@acwrightdesign
@acwrightdesign 2 года назад
Yeah definitely. I have made some stuff with MDF for sure. But most available plywood cuts terribly. The PureBond stuff is MDF core so it cuts great

Hey nice job! I have a couple of questions. I am making wine boxes of 4MM MDF and I am struggling with the glue. What king of glue do you use? Some boxes of mine went a bit unglued. I don’t know is is the right word. Sorry for my English And the second one, I saw that you are putting some nails on it? What number do you use?

Thanks! I am using transparent wood glue and 20ga 3/4" nails with my air nailer.

How well does Smoke Eater V2 work at keeping your shop from stinking like a campfire? I would love to run my laser in the basement over the 0 degree garage
@acwrightdesign
@acwrightdesign 2 года назад
After some time using the laser with and without the smoke eater I can honestly say the improvement is slight. I think it is safe to say the best way to remove the smoke and smell is just to blow the smoke outside as quickly as possible. I hope to do a follow up video about this sometime in the future.

It's been a while, how is the laser cutter? Any updates to it since your original build?
@acwrightdesign
@acwrightdesign 2 года назад
I know right? :) I have been busy making items for the craft show season. No new additions to the laser. Just breaking it in by making around 50 beer and wine carriers!

@@acwrightdesign nice, have you looked at Further's upgrades to linear rails? Wondering if that makes sense to go for if it's a new build
@acwrightdesign
@acwrightdesign 2 года назад
@@daddyshark1174 Yes for sure. I would have used them if he had the plans using the rails when I started building. I may upgrade at some point in the future. Perhaps at a a point where I would need to do a significant teardown of the laser like a tube replacement.

@@acwrightdesign makes sense! I love your setup, nicely done. What size tube do you have on it, and any regrets?
