Woodblock printing is an ancient method of using wood carving to create impressions on fabric, paper, and other products. In this sample club project we’ve created significant depth on wood blocks that we then colored and imprinted on various types of paper. Less complex than a letterpress, these wood blocks have an engraved relief pattern that, when applied with color and pressed against paper or fabric, creates a permanent impression or stamp. These intricate designs add an elegant touch to invitations and announcements, scrapbook pages, and much more. Can this laser cut that block into indiviudual block stamps around the images?

Which size Epilog Laser do you recommend to do the Skateboard Deck in the video (approx. deck length is 32")

Very nice. What kind of wood did you use? I imagine pine would be too soft right? Related, how much force would you say is necessary to get a good impression?

Hi Ron. We used pine for this project. Many types of wood will work just fine. We would suggest not putting too much ink on the wood block or applying too much pressure. This can lead to ink smudging.

How did you get it to engrave so deep?

Hi Jeff - the Fusion 40 with 120-watt laser tube is the laser machine we used to achieve the deep engraving for the woodblock stamp engraving. Our 75 and 100-watt laser tube options are great for engraving and cutting wood, foam, rubber, and other common materials used to create stamps.

Thanks for the reply. I have access to an m2 40watt but any engraving I’ve done seems to be significantly shallower. Just wondered if it is achievable on the one I mentioned and was a setting.

You can achieve the same depth with a 40-watt Fusion M2. It will take a bit longer, but you can do it. We suggest running similar settings to what we used in the video 40% Speed and 100% Power, but you'll need to run the job 2 times at least to achieve similar depth. Make sure to run the job as a Bottom Up job, and set the circular cutting table vents to the blocked sheeting to maximize suctions across the top of your works piece. Doing so will help keep the surface of your material cleaner.
