First time laser engraving leather for hats. Still needs some experimentation. Some type of masking is definitely needed. Although I do like the technique of washing the burn marks afterwards, but the leather deforms after drying out.
I have a 50w/60w chinese laser cutter.

which paper you use on the upper layer of the leather

I used vinyl transfer tape cause that's what I had on hand but you can use any kind of masking tape.

Engrave- 400mm/s , 25% power , 0.1mm scan gap Cut - 20mm/s , 15% power

So I put the masking tape on before engraving, then after it's engraved I rub some leather cleaner into it. It brings some of the color out and cleans it a bit.

I’ve heard that lasers and leather can be a bit smelly. Does your exhaust fan manage most of this, and how much does the work product smell afterwards?

It smells pretty bad. I've got a 6" exhaust fan from Vivosun, which works fine but the smell of leather still lingers in the air. However I run some leather cleaner over the finished piece that takes care of the smell pretty fast. If I can manage to find the bottle I'll post the name of it.

Yep I use some rectangle magnets. You wouldn't need magnets that large, it's just what I had laying around.

Yes 400mm/sec the fastest the standard Chinese blue/white (now OMTECH) can run at.
