I put laser disc in the same category as Neo Geo. Both were very exclusive and expensive in the 90s.

Great vid. I always wanted a Laser Disc growing up. Never got one, but I watched Last Action Hero on Laser Disc once at a friends house back in the day.

That Superman 2 case was the case of the rental version from the old super k mart rental center. I forgot about that place til now. That was the first time I saw Superman 2.

The us release of insurrection is hard to find. I had to settle on the Japanese version. and even that was rare and 60 dollars.

I had a great collection of laserdisc got a lot from a bloke on Facebook who post to us very cheap but tales about 2 months to arrive… unfortunately I had to sell them as moved house gutted now I should have kept it.. videos are on my channel of my collection 👍🏻

I went to a local goodwill here in California and found a Mortal Kombat and Jurassic Park laserdisc buried under a bunch of stuff. I went to buy it ( 2$ each) and the cashier was so mad 🤣🤣 he hid them for himself and asked if he could give me 10$ so he could keep them, I said sorry buddy. Jurassic Park is my all time favorite movie so it's a nice addition to the collection 🤘

Fantastic nostalgia trip, but myself remember how continuously unhappy I was with the LD image quality despite up to component video output. Thank god eventually DVD came, and today we can stream 4K and beyond awesomeness.

For the past week I just bought myself a copy of Stargate on Laser Disc with DTS Digital surround sound. it's so Rare. Its now in my collections of LaserDisc bookshelf. This was the last DTS LaserDisc released in the US back in 1999.

Ha ha, Highlander 3 should have the tag line "At least it is not as bad as part 2." All kidding aside, I liked that one. Fit in better with the first film and had a good villain in Mario Van Peebles. Love the music where he remakes his Katana, but have since learned thank to RU-vid that it was not very realistic and what can one say about the sex scene that watching this for the first time back in the day in my teens was like "Lets rent this again?" every time we walked passed this at the video store. LOL

I also rewatched "teen agent" a few years ago since I also loved that movie as a kid but ehhh, I don't think it holds up. It kinda falls appart towards the end. First act is still amazing tho. Will love to hear your opinions on that movie after your rewatch.

Those are some nice finds and pretty hard to come by regardless of location. The Japanese Superman releases almost always go for quite a bit and can be tricky to find. Same for the late T2s and the big Dune box. I finally found the 1.33:1 True Lies which I picked up just for the exclusive framing but sadly it’s still got the same base master as the ac3 and dts editions.

Used to be really into Laserdiscs many years ago and still have many of those discs, but honestly when I started buying more Blu-Rays it just spoiled me and became the minimum quality I'd want to actually watch. Laserdiscs still have great packaging for sure, though. Something I've noticed is that in general they're so much easier to get in great condition than vinyl records.

I’ve been starting to collect laserdiscs after I found a Japanese collector’s edition of Alien and Aliens at a film fair recently, they come in a 5 & 8 disc boxset respectively for £20. Just received the Strange Days laserdisc yesterday too.

Is it true that there was an unrated version of Total Recall released on laserdisc? I hope you say yes but I fear it's just a fan rumour.

In the 80's, we had a timeshare at Aviemore, Scotland which had a laser disc player in the chalet. You could rent the discs from the main reception which was very exciting at the time. I still have vivid memories of seeing Alien, First Blood and Dune for the first time (and far too young) in all their laser disc glory. Couldn't make it through Eddie Murphy's Best Defense though 😂

I still hope David Lynch do a complete director's cut / special edition version of "Dune". I think HBO Max would possibly fund it. It's such a weird adaptation, that I want to see his best version of that film.

Some of the LDs that I got last year were: “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas!”/“Horton Hears a Who!” (1997 issue) “Koyaanisqatsi” “Daikaiju Gamera”.

I got tired of the streaming services moving my favorite content, so I started buying every star trek season I could get my hands on through goodwill.

Couple things: - I think it's a bit unfair to call LaserDisc a "failure" in the US at least; it was the cinephile's format of the 80s and 90s. And as such, succeeded in the niche. When I was a kid in the early- to mid-90s we went to a higher end video store that **only** stocked LD for rental and purchase. Joe Six-pack might have been happy to watch a film after work without edits or commercials, but the person who really wants to experience Superman or Star Wars will probably have a better than average TV and sound setup and will take full advantage of the format. - I'm mid-move, so it's in storage right now and I can't check the exact model number, but I've got a Pioneer LaserDisc player that I run through an upconvert box and it gives a quite respectable picture on a 720p TV in my ManCave. I just got my hands on the last non-special edition LD release of Star Wars and am looking forward to rewatching them in a quality and format befitting the films.

Great video as always, definitely give ST:Insurrection another go, there are some great character moments in it and as you said, the score is excellent (even if the visual effects have switched from model work in First Contact to mostly digital ships in this one…..they look pretty crap) Also, that Superman III laserdisc cover, what an odd choice for the entire movie to be represented by that image?

Speaking of "DUNE", what is your opinion on the 2014 docu-mentary where they talked about Alejandro Jodorowsky's unmade and infamous 10-hour-long film?

Hey Oliver, there’s a film that I think you should take a look at, if you haven’t watched it yet. A movie called Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2000). It’s a really underrated movie that has a great story to it That’s both sad and happy. Haley Joel Osmont’s acting is really amazing. He really moves and acts like a robot. and I think you will also really love the music that was done by John Williams. The visual effects are outstanding as well. So, if you haven’t seen it, I highly suggest you give it a watch.
