This is the last 10 mins of the 20 min ride up to the top of Stelvio going up the south side. This is on a BMW Motorrad Tour summer 2010 following 2 friends. Filmed using GoPro Hero HD.
I was there in 2010 also, won a trip with Edelweiss.... God it was amazing. Wish I had the money to go back. I just need to move to Southern Germany, perfect place. :)
@MrEunuch Thanks for the reply. I am using a GoPro with the open back on the shell but I have some felt-like material covering the slots. Perhaps the noise on my vids has more to do with the fact that the camera is on a chest harness and I ride an unfaired old Beemer. I also get more top end sound than I notice when riding and less exhaust sound. It helps if I keep my knees pressed against the tank. I would love to have a remote mike option. Enjoy your trip and try to get some time on the Multi.
@o0jun0o This is in The Alps, the large mountain range across south central Europe, just above the Mediterranean. This particular pass is between Italy and Switzerland and is one of the famous ones to do though there are a lot better (to ride) but less well known passes across the mountain range. I'm going again this year to make sure they're just as much fun ;-)
what a good quality vid, I did this in 2009 awsome roads. I put a vid on too check itout.. stelvio pass on a hyabusa.. to the sound track of the animals land of the rising sun.... xcelente
@yamahar87 Hi. This was taken in Aug 2010 playing in The Alps across Europe. This particular road is between Switzerland and Italy. You should come over and try them :-).
@eccchung Hi. Well, that's a leading question! When I'm riding like that I don't actually make a point of checking the speedo and spend time thinking about is the speed appropriate for what I'm trying to do. Not a get out, just that I prefer to think there is an optimum pace for the road, conditions, corner, etc and I'm trying to achieve that safely.
@JohnMoosome The Merc did take up a bit of room didn't he. Actually I was just taking a cheeky peek at what the view was like so I could turn and gt some decent footage before the next bend. I'm conscious that I should try and capture some of the experience that you have in your peripheral vision that the camera dones't capture just lining up the next apex.
Oh that's cute music to my ears that was one of the most beautiful rides I've ever seen caught on camera is the best part I can leave my bike at home and get one there what's the average rental on a bike that can get you through the pass on a that's not underpowered and since I never done that ride before I would consider it a privilege and an honor to ride with you gentlemen how do you go about getting play pass the ride over there
@calineophyte Hi. I've done nothing explicitly to muffle the sound of the wind. I've used the non-waterproof slotted rear in the camera and simply stuck it to the side of my lid. Maybe I am just lucky and it doesn't bother my recordings where it is on the side of my Schuberth S1 Pro helmet. I changed the standard GS screen for the Adventure one as its a tad bigger (and meaner tinted ;-)). I just toot it for granted that that's what you get.
Oh man what a beautiful ride for the first time in my life I wish I was rich I'd love to be there tomorrow riding up that pass oh man where is that I got to Google it how do you get your bike there
Glad you like it! It's one of the passes most people have to tick off their biking bucket list in Europe. Gets busy though. I'm in the UK so luckily can ride to that region of the Alps where there are lots and lots of passes - all you can eat. Takes a couple of days getting there if you don't want to rush and prefer to stay off the motorways/freeways. I have ridden with a Canadian who came to the UK, hired a BMW and joined us on a tour so it is possible is you're Stateside!
This is good driving, cutting corners just right requires using the whole road if you can make sure there's no opposing traffic. Also his handling of the throttle in the corners is spot on. Do you have a motorcycle? If so, stay off it
great video mate ! stelvio is my next dastination :) planned to be there this month..but i think will be a lot of traffic and no fun.. does anyone know if it will be openned till middle October ? Thanks
Thanks matey. This was using the closed mount on a standard GS with an adventure screen and winglets. I'm 5' 8* and just seemed to hit the sweet spot with the sound compared to others who seemed to get a lot of wind noise. I have details of where the mount is attached to my lid too if you're interested.
@MrEunuch you know whats the best time of year to ride there? when theres not too much traffic, when its not too cold/hot...was thinking of maybe april...
The Stelvio is as spectacular as it gets, but beware, you should have some experience before driving it on a mc. Especially the northside ( not shown here) is very challenging with some really nasty hairpins and the road is not very well maintained. The vistas are simply magnificent though ! I'll recommend the Col de l'iseran and Col d'izoard as well, both passes are in the French alps. Furka pass in Switzerland is great too. Great video, makes me want to back !
@calineophyte I notice a bit of wind noise on your videos and I'd say unlucky turbulence. Worth trying a different position, or coming over the pond and trying the roads this side .. maybe there isn't turbulence in Europe ;-). BTW, I'm back in the summer for the top 30 passes again with BMW UK and riding with 2 friends on Duke Multistradas .. the old girl will get a workout trying to keep up. Ride safe.
@khunwick Wow. I'd like to have done it back then but I didn't get into touring into mid 90's. Can't remember if the roads were any different quality, but as you note video quality certainly is. Always nice to beat the Tour Leader too -). I hope you're still hooning about the Alps. Ride safe.
The road and the mountain look nice, sure it's fun to ride. I'm surprised somebody wants to show to the public his highly UNSKILLED riding! If you can't stay in your lane on the curves and need the WHOLE road, you need to learn to ride first and then show videos... And if I remember right, in Europe too uninterrupted middle lane means "Don't cross/pass" but you and your buddies crossed the middle lane in MULTIPLE occasions, like it doesn't exists for you...And make turns like snails...
+Constantinos Charalambous Hi. On the GS as long as you're not stuck behind a car you can hit most of those in 2nd gear. Might need a little clutch work, but with lots of torque you can shoot out nice and quick. Only the real tight 180 degree turns on a steep incline or are single vehicle width needing you to feather it at walking pace do I go down to first.
