Scenes from the last evening of service of the class 101 DMUs on British Rail on Christmas Eve 2003 including the final arrival complete with detonators.
One of my favourite design D.M.U,managed ride on one recently, at Great Central Railway, 125 anniversary event ,Loughborough, March 2024 ,in past from Erdington to Birmingham new st,before had electric trains😂
Ahh memories..kirkcaldy to Edinburgh on these loved the engine noise and how clattery they were and the ability to stick your head out of the window..better than any app on any device. ...real memories from real times
Loved these and always do I remember in 1994 being on the 10:38 to Blackpool north from Preston on summer Saturdays always packed out 6 car train 3 two cars traveling at 70 mph on jointed track was a memory I will never forget
Yes! These were used as express trains! Always a six car train! 1978, 1979! The 5.40pm from Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria express train! Yes, 70mph! Blue and grey carriages!
I was there, in fact I saw myself on the video. Twenty years ago now. Incredible. But what REALLY got me was firstly, the driver thought, let's see what this baby can still do and drove her hard and she took it all in her stride. But also when it got to the edge of the train shed at Picc, as you heard on this, EVERY SINGLE other train in there, saluted her with their horns, as she sadly but proudly passed into history. Not going to pretend, it got me right there on the day and still does to this day Gone, but certainly NOT forgotten. RIP Class 101's that didn't make it into preservation.
Amazing how long these were in service and I’m surprised that they got such a big send off. Don’t think I’ve ever been on these units when they were in service but I have rode one (or one of the other 1st gen DMU’s) in preservation. Shame the pacers didn’t get such a big send off but they were retired in the middle of COVID so maybe that is why..
Fond memories of the metropolitan cammell class 101 from the 80s & 90s i was always on these going to and from my then girlfriend's, also used cravens limited dmus as well .
The announcements in this video, some of which are cut off - do you still have the full recordings? These are defunct TOC’s being announced and is very interesting to hear.
I wish they'd bring these trains back, along with other slam-doors, it beats waiting for the ticket conductors to get their payment for tickets before they open the doors, if that made sense? It's why most trains are late, the conductors too busy selling tickets, instead of letting passengers on the train.
Uhh what era do you think this is? Ticket machines are pretty much at every station now. Never seen a guard sell tickets on the platform. If they do they would most likely do it on the train.
@@Mgameing123 I'll try to rephrase it, train conductors operate the doors on the trains, a lot of them, especially on northern, are too busy slowly walking down the train checking tickets, while the train is at the station, people waiting to get off or on, but can't because the conductor wont open the doors until he's checked everyones tickets. It's annoying, and there was 0 waiting with slam door trains, you could open the door yourself. I hope that makes more sense?
because they were damn solid machines and were still perfectly capable of doing their job, an abundance of spares from the multitude of similar units withdrawn before them also kept their maintainence costs down
They were actually in service longer than the pacers. Class 101 Built: 1956 Retired: 2003 In service for 47 years. Pacers Built: 1985 Retired: 2020 In service for 35 years.
