I like hearing the history of your farm, I am a 6th generation farmer/sugar maker. I used to gather sap/log with horses. I work with my 372 XP improving the forest, I also work on dairy farm, help my friends sugar and haul for Cabot creamy "the home stead" plant in Vermont. I enjoy seeing how you folks operate. I would like to see that new suger house in action! That is a beautiful building. I have ever boiled with a Colman lantern all night after gathering 1,500 buckets 10 hours. I can see the joy you have while working in the woods, I enjoy taking care of land while making a living. Have fun out there I enjoy your channel.

Came across you channel on a RU-vid suggestion. My grandfather was a dairy farmer in western NY state. He had a small three sided building that he boiled sap in. He called it the sugar shack and the groves of maple trees on the farm were called the sugar bush. I’ll never forget the smell of that hardwood fired boiler and maple sap being reduced to syrup. Thanks for the video that brought back all those wonderful memories. I’m going to subscribe and look forward to more of your videos.

So amazing! Hard work. I was always so careful to go through in late fall, before the snow, to get as much as possible up off the ground. Helps alot. A bit too late now but try hanging your drill from a strap over your shoulder, let it hang by your side when working with fittings or other jobs that need two hands. I know how it is to fall in the snow where I was helping was very steep. I love the big ones also, the stories they could tell.

I have had 12 to 14 taps each year here in Cincinnati, Ohio since I started in 2003. I tap in early January and get reasonable sap flow a few days a week until about Feb. 20. Then I tend to get the best flow for about 3 weeks. Then the trees will begin to wake for spring about March 10. I get about 2.5 to 3 gallons of finished syrup per year. Its a a labor of love and takes a lot of patience and attention when you make maple syrup on the stove top. The house smells like the pot I accidently burnt a couple days ago. If you would like to give it a try next year, educate yourself as to how to do it by doing online research and give it a try.

Since sugar maples typically live for 200 years and some up to 400, they are what one could call a long term investment. The 5 in front of our farm house were planted as saplings in 1890, and are nowhere near the size of the ones you showed. The few large ones scattered around our property are more in line with yours, but I have no idea how old they are (unlike the ones at the house that we have an exact date on).

So can you describe the limitations on tapping a single tree? Can you have more than one tap per tree, when you retap how do you decide where the optimum spot is? It seems you rely on gravity to do part of the work with the sap tubing although I understand you use the vacuum pump as well. I never knew anything about the syrup manufacturing process, I find it very interesting. Thanks for sharing your families knowledge.
