Eau Claire market was an avant garde niche novety mall that once housed very ???? (uncatagorized) niche shops in Calgary. Lots of community events ie break dancing meet ups, skater meets, rallies, and Summer time park goers Prince's Island park etc) met there over the years.
But the mall soon turned to disrepair over the 20 or so years of it's renovations.
The mall once had a Pladium/internet cafe by the Cineplex, a book publisher, a Vacation travel agent, lots of food kiosks, but only 3 remain now....
Son's of the Pharol (middle eastern classical art, especially Copic Egyptian), The Tibetan store, a store that sold collectable animation cels, and a host of others.
The goal was to slowly recover from Post Covid.... with it's last remaning anchors, the Cineplex, the the Blood Clinic (they like took over 1/2 of the second floor, infact they renovated it to be used as their main clinic as the old Red Cross building was too obsolete. New lighting fictures, new clinic flooring, (white hospital sterle), computerized, etc etc. But covid shut it down. (they didn't even get to use the new fancy stove (usually for soup. The blood clinic makes soup sometimes, but covid and stuff stopped them for a while, so it's just chips, pop and cookies).
Cinema movies I saw there were: Star Ship Troopers, (This was prior to the Chinoook, and Collisum cinema (in Shawnessy)then the sattelite ones made in the suburbs. (ie Sunridge, Seton, University Calgary was REALLY smaller in the 90's....
There was a local busker called Artie the Jester who used to preform alot at eau clare. Eau Claire also had a hard rock cafe (now a day care)...
the problem is that Calgary's not big enough for these massive grand 90's schemes... ohh boywait a few years later bahahhahah. But still we probably need about 500 K more people, we're at 1.5 Milion ish people. Especially if Alberta diversifies it's economy.
Eau Claire will be demolished at the end of Q2 (End of April start of May), 2024, to make way for the C-train line, , housing, and development. (to facilitate the above mentioned population).
Cool stuff that happened at Eau Claire: it was the meeting place for Civic Camp (a citizen based community organization), During Indigenous Awareness month it was the unveiling of a group of super heroes for an Indigenous child cultural group. The children created individual superheroes, the set for 'Last of Us" a Zombie apocalypse show filmed in Alberta. numerous colourful meet ups,....
Mission now: Get candy for nephews and nieces, (and a set for myself heh), some really cool incence from the Pharol and Tibetan shop, a book from the fantasy book store. Eat at the last remaning kisosks a Chinese place, they also have a trendy Japanese sushi bar too. And continue to give blood.
Oh almost forgot, There was once an Imax there a independent IMAX, they showed documentaries. As mentioned Eau Claire was going for a novelty shop concept.. They should have opened a new age like store there Like this Bee store as with the house in Kensington, Or the fantasy book store should have catered to the geek culture. with some sort of D&D thing.. Perhaps a farmer's market... Or something Chinese given it's proximity to Center Street, and Chinatown..
Alas the mall was in a very inconvinient place. It was the old Grey Hound depot.....
Anyways I need to learn to walk slower and just film. This is show.... not tell..... heh.....
