He was a boy when the first plane flew He was also alive around the time spirit of saint Louis the first plane to fly across the Atlantic (Long Island, New York, to Paris, France) The first men to land on the moon, (and also the first object in space, first living creature in space, and the first man in space) This man lived through one of the most interesting times in the history of the world
Claudia M Parada Or being one of the oldest people in the world probably having outlived several children and wives. And that, for the most part, no one you meet can reminisce with you about the time you grew up in. Very lonely indeed.
Not only was he the last living U.S. WWI veteran, but also the 2nd-to last living WWI vet overall. After his death on Sunday, February 27th, 2011, Florence Green of the UK became the last living WWI vet overall. Florence unfortunately passed away on Saturday, February 4th, 2012, marking the fact that there are no longer any living WWI vets.
@RatseyThe_Rat Not really as time goes on people and veterans will pass on. It's just a natural part of life. It's good there hasn't been any sort of global conflict like the world wars since.
@@jonasswitzer9266 Same, my great-grandfather from the Bronx, New York, enlisted to fight in the First World War and all three of my great-uncles from Pittsburgh were drafted to fight in the Second World War.
@Nicholas Negosian prolly doesnt, but believe in what you want. in this case, this is a great person, he fought for his country, so wishing him happiness in heaven is a nice thing to do (heaven = good peaceful place)
Same Goldie Glocks, nice name btw, man ever since BF1 I have always wanted to know about WWI, and wish I could talk to a WWI vet, but I found out the last one died before I even got interested in WWI :(
Im 16 about to turn 17 and i cant wrap up in my mind that kids my age went and fought in a war and never got to see their families again and their families never got to see them alive
Ragnar Onsager why the fuck would the government want to kill some old WWI vet? What, is some old vet from West Virginia gonna expose their hidden agenda?
Wow just to think, this man saw the begging and the end of the USSR, he saw the British empire when it was at its peak, and the end of its decline, he saw America grow from an insignificant country to the only world super power, he saw a lot in his days on earth.
this man lived under 20 US Presidents: - William McKinley - Theodore Roosevelt - William Howard Taft - Woodrow Wilson - Warren G. Harding - Calvin Cooldige - Herbert Hoover - Franklin Delano Roosevelt - Harry S. Truman - Dwight D. Eisenhower - John F. kennedy - Lyndon B. Johnson - Richard Nixon - Gerald Ford - Jimmy carter - Ronald Reagan - George H.W. Bush - Bill Clinton - George W. Bush - Barack Obama Thats stunning!
This man has gone through eras of kingdoms, fascists, communists, and democracies, and more wars and conflicts than I can count. That’s absolutely mind boggling.
"eras" are you a moron? Youre saying it like he has lived centuries. Stop being dramatic. It's really impressive to see him live to this old but you guys are obnoxious with the praising
Yes, you're right. He was alive to see the fall of major Western monarchies after WW1, the communist revolutions that soon followed, the rise of Soviet Union, Great Depression, the rise of fascism prior to WW2, the fall of fascism after WW2, the Cold War, the fall of Soviet Union, 9/11, Great Recession, and maybe in the end he saw the resurgence of Nazism in form of Neo-Nazis
He survived all diseases, the Great War and World War II. For the reward, he gets to share his experiences and tell his amazing story of survival. What an incredible man he is!
@@kremidgames1813 Indeed. My grandfather was very young when he was drafted for WW2 at the end of the war. And even tho he was one of the youngest people who have seen the war, he passed away at age 93 last year. Time is flying by.
His last words were "I was never looking for adventure, it just came to me." Edit: Several people have notified me that these might not be his last words, checking my sources now. Can't like about something like this
Titanic's sinking, WWI, Roaring 20s, Great Depression , WWII, the Holocaust, Cuban Misslie crisis, Cold war, Korean war, space race, beginning of the internet, and more. Frank Buckles has gone through every major event in the 20th century. Rest In Peace Frank Buckles. 1901-2011
I find it rather fitting that you brought up the _Titanic_ Disaster, as Frank Buckles traveled to Europe to join the fighting aboard the RMS _Carpathia._ He may very well have been the last living person who stepped aboard the ill-fated Cunarder.
God bless him and it's absolutely amazing how well he looks at 110... No he can't walk very well but hey he is 110 and he lived an amazing life. Rest in peace hero.
It's sad that he died only 27 days after he turned 110 (when this video came out). Imagine what he must have been like as a young man? Incredible stories, I'm sure!
@@heinzguderian628 well, Nazi Germany wasn’t the mightiest of empires, it only lasted 12 years! The USSR however, outliving that monstrosity is an achievement indeed.
some desert dude my comment didn't mean to suggest you were of any specific ethnic group. Your icon is a guy wearing a head covering that's used in deserts traditionally.
Don't say that man. There are plenty of us WW1 buffs out there. If you are interested in it, you should watch a channel called TheGreatWar on youtube. It is pretty fucking amazing.
Timothy Magnussen No I mean that the Germans were just protecting themselves from foreign aggression, they struck first to prevent the allies from pincering them.
Jacob Ford The war started when Austria Hungary went to war against Serbia. Which drew Germany into the war because of their alliance with Austria Hungary. In fact the English didn't declare war on Germany until Germany invaded Belgium. You are either a troll, or you have an IQ on par with a potato.
Sally Mendoza Absolutely right. If not for individuals like him. None of these "instant" stars would have had a chance to be pop stars or whatever they are if guys like him didn't answer the call to action.
chris s that has to be the weakest roast bro. And why you even here? Just to find people to roast? You're such a brave keyboard warrior. I'm so disappointed in you
Not known by many people, there's a WW1 memorial on the State Capitol grounds in Charleston WV and it's been there as long as I can remember. I'm 52yrs old.
Jack Estis The memorial in question for the video was for America's efforts in World War 1. With that said, the vast majority of the service men in ww1 were white with Politically Incorrect views for the current year.
As a history lover, seeing this fills me with joy, but also with sadness. You see, there will come a point in my life where there will be no more people who witnessed in person events like World War One (The veterans are all dead, but there is still people of the time alive) Second World War and the Vietnam War (Well, i do Hope to outlive this last one). is shocking to see that all these events that are so remarkable in history will remain only in the books, and not more in memories. It's something that makes you think about a lot.
all the young veterans are doing so much for us alr we should also support them for what they've done for us. there are so many projects helping the veterans like HAVE NFTs
BlueVersion2 god is real and how come someone made Earth who made Earth huh and outer space and animals back in 1 billion years and trees and how come we breathe on earth except the other planets
Hope he’s resting peacefully, it’s sad to think that this will happen to the ww2, Korean, Vietnam, and even the wars in the Middle East rn. RIP to all soldiers
Middle East soldiers do not deserve recognition in my opinion. I know I’m gonna get hate on this comment. However ‘The War on Terror’ was just a reason to kill and invade. As was the Vietnam war. WW1 and WW2 veterans deserve everything. And even then American veterans overshadow the rest. But Polish and English, French and even Belgian soldiers did as much. Maybe even more. To the liberation of Europe. America only joined in WW2 because of Japan and Pearl Harbor.
@@mycklaflonscamping1398 I feel like despite intentions of wars, that doesn't diminish individual acts of heroism of certain soldiers. search up John A. Chapman in the Battle of Takur Ghar, which was during the war in Afghanistan. I'd call him a hero even though the war he was fighting might not be as honorable as ww1 or ww2.
When i see people so old like him im like "imagine all that they have seen, all that they know, all that they have been through, all that they have lived"
Sadly he passed away on February 27, 2011. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, which he very much deserves. Thank you for your service, Frank Buckles.
I feel the same ans my heart breaks when I see the young veterans retire early and dont get anything to spend the rest of their lives. pls help them through supporting the HAVE NFTs as they're currently working for their empowerment. below is their discord
2pac's life goes on is ringing in my ears after seeing this. Maybe this dude is having a toast with his comrades and dead soldiers from axis powers and all are friends
Quite common for 16 yo to go as volunteers at war. In italy the whole male generation of 1899 basically disappeared during the war, 16 yo boys went massively as volunteers at the beginning of the war and got slaughtered. Also in 1917/1918 they were conscripted so just imagine..... The 1898/1899 generation in Italy went totally missing, few remained
ww3 isnt gonna be around in time for your parents mabey you and i will be around during it, but why even think about ww3 its a little to early to be thinking about it, for all we know the german union could be planning it
Alucard Hellsing Oh no, there are so many things beyond nuclear weapons. If we wanted, we could breed a strain of bacteria (or genetically engineer a virus) so strong it resists every treatment known to man and spreads like wildfire. Not nearly as impressive to watch, but much more thorough. ^^
He’s been through the whole 20th century and he’s learned from its history he saw the change in society throughout the years the knowledge he possessed of being alive through all that is quite special
Wow, this man lived through the russo japanese war,the fall of the qing dynasty, Titanic, wwi,The Russian Revolution,The great depression,WW2,The cold war, the Korean War, The Space Race,The Vietnam War,The fall of the USSR,,War in Afghanistan,9/11,Iraq war ,and the modern age
He did die 27 days later. The last combat veteran to die was on November 9, 2011. The last veteran (a woman member of the Woman's Air Force of Britain) dies on 9 February 2012.
Remember when this was bravery? Now it's brave to make up genders and words and then bully those people who disagree with you. We need more heroes like this
So true. Bravery nowadays is to march naked on street with face paints and rainbow flags to show support for made up genders and harass and assault those who don't agree.
My grandfather is 107 and still remembers the colors, engine types, makes and models of the cars he owned in the 30s. He dug miles of trenches by hand in Germany In WW2. When I listen to the stories of his early days I can’t help but realize I was born 2 generations late
Toolman329 Thank you for your Service! I was blessed to be the Daughter of older Parents. My Daddy & Godfather were both WW2 Vets, US Army Air Corp. I learned so much from my Parents. Respect, honesty, kindness & common decency were the norm. I'm keeping those values alive as we live in a world now where common sense, common courtesy, & common decency are no longer common. It's nice to know there are many WW2 Vets still with us. Unfortunately, my Godparents & recently both my Parents have passed. (RIP💖) I appreciate your comment. Thank you for your Service. 💖🌟🇺🇸🌟💖
"I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the ones who died whom have that right to me..." Rest in peace, 1901 - 2011.
Makes me a bit sad when these ww1-ww2 veterans start dying of extreme old age. Like a bit of history is fleeting away from us. They witnessed so much and experienced so much. 100 years and counting man! That's so insane for me to comprehend. I doubt anyone in my family including me will ever live that long. I hope he's doing well in the afterlife he deserves his rest.
My great grandfather Lawrence Scholl was in the US Army in WW1. Born August 10, 1898-Died December 2, 1984 aged 86 years. He happily gave his life to save mine. I was 7 when he died. He was a very nice man.
I met Frank in KCMO at the World War one museum when my civil war reenacting group did a cannon live fire in front of the museum. May God rest that great man's soul.
Bless this man’s sole, as someone who had 2 Great Grandfathers who served in this terrible war, I find it very unfortunate they all passed away. Rest In Peace to these true American heroes. They will be missed, I hope our World War 2 veterans will have their stories recorded for future generations to hear.
Imagine being part of 1 of the most brutal and costly wars known to man, surviving, and then realizing long after your the only remaining one still alive out of everybody who had fought. Rest in peace.
This man saw so many things live that it is almost unimaginable: The German Empire, its collapse into the Weimar Republic, to its collapse with the Rise of Nazi Germany, followed by the Fall of Nazi Germany and the creation of the Federal Republic and the reunification of the two German states. The Russian Civil War, followed by the establishment of the Soviet Union, the Cold War tensions, slow collapse of the Soviets, creation of the Russian Federation. This man outlived every Soviet leader except Gorbachev. This man was alive through NINETEEN different Presidencies from McKinley (briefly after he was born) to Obama, seeing the transformation of a racially segregated country to a country that elected its first non-white President. He saw the entirety of the Civil Rights Movement and the abandoning of the Jim Crow laws too. He saw Britain turn from the biggest Empire in history to the Britain we know today. The entirety of the rapid change in the music industry happened in his lifetime, with the music of the 1910s in his childhood, through the rise of Rock n'Roll and the Beatlemania, all the way to the likes of Justin Bieber. This man was a gem that definitely had so much knowledge, some of which he might have never passed on.
