Here is the complete “Last Night When We Were Young” sequence from “In The Good Old Summertime” (1949) as performed by Judy Garland on January 27, 1949, at MGM.
(Check out this video for the raw footage: • Last Night When We Wer... )
This deleted song has been included in several laser disc, DVD, and Blu-ray releases. However, most of the footage of the entire sequence has never been released.
The sequence begins with a scene that’s in the final edit of the film. Veronica (Judy) returns home from her disastrous date and tells her aunt about it. She then walks up the stairs and in the finished film it cuts to the next day at the Oberkugen music shop.
Originally, the film was to fade to Veronica in her bedroom. We see her move about her room and hear her thoughts which segued into “Last Night When We Were Young.” This footage is silent at first, then we hear a woman’s voice reciting Veronica’s thoughts (that Judy would dub in later) and the director (Robert Z. Leonard) telling Judy when to “Go!” to her next mark.
Now, thanks to the various takes available, we finally find out what Judy says as she’s reading the letter, “This time tomorrow night - we will have met.”
It was customary to film musical numbers with silent footage. The performers would lip sync on the set to a playback record and the music and foley effect would have been added later. However, in this case, they recorded live on set for Judy to have a guide for dubbing Veronica’s thoughts and her one line as heard here.
It’s great to be able to see this as it was intended and to see what Veronica’s bedroom looked like.
Enjoy!
A big THANK YOU to Hisato M. for obtaining and sharing this great footage with us!

Beautiful stuff, this should've been left in the film. I do, however, prefer the version Judy cut for her 1956 Capitol album Judy. That one is dripping with emotion, absolutely incredible. Only Judy could best herself.

I'm baffled this wasn't included on either the DVD or Blu-ray for In the Good Old Summertime. Did this come from the laserdisc? I know the Judy Garland boxed set had a ton of content that hasn't made its way to any other format.

The footage is from a variety of sources. The newly obtained raw footage of the various takes and the "That's Entertainment!" discs. It was originally on the early 90s laser disc, but just the song and a bit of the intro (the off camera directions). The rest of the footage of "Veronica" going up the stairs and walking into her room and then to the fireplace are all new. For whatever reason, they didn't put any of it on the early 00s DVD nor the more recent Blu-ray (which looks amazing - newly restored - a must have!).

I, too, am ABSOLUTELY, 💯 - Floored!!- that this footage exists. I am so grateful to you for posting it -…… It’s obvious that it did not make enough sense with the plot. After all, she never could have kissed an imaginary lover! (who, at the very very very end of the movie… She finds out… Was Van Johnson, all the time). - The lyrics of the song just simply would not have made enough sense, given the plot. But. Wow. Wow, wow, wow, wow. I had the audio recording of her singing this… On a double album I bought as a teenager when I lived in Belgium… So blessed and lucky am I… Anyway… And I always just assumed that she simply recorded this, because she, UNDERSTANDABLY!!- so loved this song. My goodness. Peggy Lee sings it beautifully… As does Frank Sinatra… But this one… Judy Garland… The one and only Judy… Singing this song… And she knew Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg (Who also wrote… For those who don’t know… “Somewhere Over the Rainbow .” ) … The composer and lyricist …. So; let’s face it. !!! -- So. This is one of the most special Recordings that exists… In 20th/21st century, if you really think that through. I really mean that. Thank you so, so much. And thank you beyond measure, incomparable Frances Ethel Gumm 🏆 🌟 🌟 🎖 🏅 🙏🏼 🙏🏼 ✌🏽 ☮️ ❤❤❤❤… our: 1-&-ONLY: L E G E N D: Judy Garland. ♥️

Which scene would this one have been after? I haven’t seen the film in a long time so I’m unsure, but I’d like to edit and add it back in for personal viewing.
