Last of mohicans (1992) - www.imdb.com/title/tt0104691/ Director: Michael Mann Actors: Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Russell Means, Eric Schweig, Jodhi May, Steven Waddington, Wes Studi, Maurice Roëves.
It should have won a hatful of Oscars. One of the greatest films of the 90’s. Everything about it, the script, cinematography, acting, music just is flawless. I love this film.
My father was a US History teacher, he had great respect for the Ohio Native tribes (especially the Erie, who were wiped out by the Iroquois but their legacy in the Cleveland area is still felt today). This was the last movie we saw before he died...I am grateful we shared it together. The soundtrack, along with everything else, is superb.
Wes Studi was so great in this film. He played the Villian perfectly! He deserved an Oscar for this role! And Russell Means as well! These guy's MADE this film!!!
I would suggest that Magua, like the best of villains, doesn't see himself as a villain or even particularly evil. He sees himself as the victim, first of the British who would cost him his family, then betrayed in his quest for justice and revenge by the French, and finally robbed and cheated of his deserved respect and glory by the tribal elder. In his eyes he was the one who was always being treated badly. In one way you could argue that the real villains of the movie are the English and French, who think nothing of using, abusing, and exploiting the native Americans, and to some extent the American colonists, up to the point of getting them killed fighting as expendable pawns in a war between European powers far away.
Wes Studi has the most magnificent face and profile. You can’t stop looking at him. The cinematography and the music-spectacular. This movie should’ve won every award.
Wes Studi totally made this movie for me. He should have got an Oscar for this. A power story, fabulous cast, excellent musical score that makes me cry no matter how often I watch...but Wes...he perfect in this..he was good n Dances With Wolves too.
One of my all time favs. As a young Marine stationed on Okinawa in 1993 my roommate had the soundtrack and I swear he would play it everyday. One day I asked what was that and he told me it was the soundtrack to this movie. Later on One my recruiter who I ran into at Kadena invited me over to his house to meet his family. We ate dinner and then he put this movie on laser disc he had (original big laser disc). And I’ve never been the same.
The best! The entire last ten minutes ...minimal dialog, clear scenes with sparse cuts, good pacing... could school directors today. And such acting, from the villain to the others! never gets old
So damn powerful. I cry almost every time I watch it. The emotions it taps into are deep. There is just so much strength and love shown by these characters towards the end of this movie, starting with Duncans sacrifice and redemption.
IMO, This is the best movie ever made. It is Daniel Day Lewis’ defining role. He saves Madeline Stowe’s life three times and kills all the bad guys. The filming is absolutely magnificent and the soundtrack is great as well. It’s just the perfect movie.
Like Dances with Wolves, this is a fantastic tribute to classic film making, with a broad story and a history, a script and cast whose commitment to their art is not in any way compromised by money or commercialism. Both these films for me are a testament to the dedication of the filmmakers who fought to bring these to the public forum. As for the music in both films, I shall never underestimate the sheer brilliance of these people who can so perfectly punctuate the filmmakers art and who bring an emotion to the vision.
I love how they used multiple famous paintings as scenes. Like the oval on the bridge and the meeting on the quarry between the French and British generals. Awesome soundtrack!
There is no 'greatest of all time' in any regard, be it sports, movies or any other human endeavor...The soundtrack was right up there with the film 'Gettysburg'...
I remember seeing this when it first came out...theater was packed and when he killed Uncas, we all screamed..what an impactful and deeply moving movie. Why cant they make these kinds of movies today.
Alicia Saracino This movie was adapted From the Book, The Last Mohican, When I was a teenager in the 1970,I read the book and it marked the rest of my life..
Wes Studi was outstanding in this movie, and Daniel day-lewis and Madeline Stow, why there were never oscars or any awards for this movie is a mystery, one of the best movies ever.
I finally got to see this movie unedited and in HD. WOW...Epic. This movie defines Epic. It harkens back to movies like Ben Hur/Spartacus/Gone with the Wind.
I watched this movie when I was 15 years old... And now I'm 42. And no matter how many times I watches it, I still have the same feeling as it was like the first time watching it... One of the best historical movie ever made ❤️❤️❤️
I have seen this great movie so many times and I still love it! The mountains of NC make it even more beautiful. Every time I have driven to Asheville, NC. I automatically think of this. So awesome!
I live in NC, not far from Asheville NC, some of the actors live around my home town, I grew up here in a small town called Robbinsville NC, I love the Cherokee Indians that live here I went to school with alot of them.
The courier being sent out from the fort, while receiving cover fire, is the best scene (IMHO); the end fight between Uncas and Magua, followed by that of Magua and Chingatchgook is next. Just love that uplifting music in the courier scene.
Thank you, GreatFilm. The fact that so many of the best moments in this beautiful, exiting and romantic classic, occur wordlessly, should be a clear sign to filmmakers the power of the uniquely visual and audial experience movies can be - entertaining for those who crave it, educational for those who seek it, and inspiring for everyone who beholds it. The entire scene at the end has everything a climactic scene should have, and all you have are the actors, costumes, scenery and score - no speeches, monologues, or declarations, the only thing that was left was to choose and to act. Real life doesn’t happen in speeches, but in actions, consequences and accountability - and much of it wordless. Michael Mann never gets the accolades due him and the entire production team and performers, for achieving a true Adventure film. It is surely one of the top few films of that decade and I think it is right at home among the top films of all time - well, it is for me, at least. The majesty and beauty of the locations alone is enough to compel repeated viewings.
Saw this at the Kennedy center premiere, my dad won tickets, I was young and mad I couldn’t get popcorn 🍿, I left blown away as a 10yr old, this movie and this soundtrack is 🔥
I saw this movie at the theatre when it came out in Hamilton, Ontario. The beautiful Tivoli theatre. You can't imagine how beautiful and lush this film was on the big screen with terrific Dolby sound. It was breathtaking.
Yeah, Wes Studi was a terrific actor. I complimented him on FaceBook several years ago and he thanked me. I was scared shitless of Wes Studi after watching this movie. I would never have dared to cross him in real life. He came across as a human Cuisinart, slicing and dicing his way through enemies and victims. I was more relieved, not overjoyed, when Russell Means' father character finally kills Magua at the end putting an end to the heinous evil stalking the frontier lands.
Love this epic film. I watched it so many times at the theater. The last time, an usher came to where I was sitting and said "do you know? you're the only one here." I had the whole big screen to myself
My wife had this soundtrack to her walking out on our wedding day. It was a beautiful outdoor California wedding in amazing gardens. She appeared out of nowhere as the music picked up pace. It astounded everyone. Amazing!
One of the greatest films of all time. Each character seemed so real like they could live down the street from u. U cared what happened to them especially because u knew no one was safe. Meaning anyone could be killed at any time. And even though Magua was a cold hearted MF’er, u could relate to him cause of what he’d been through and what was taken from him.
Fabulous book, must have read it 6 or 7 times. If you enjoyed Last of the Mohicans, then Leatherstocking Tales is also very good by the same author James Fenimore Cooper.
I'm 22 now, but my dad let my brother and I watch this when we were little kids, best decision he ever made. I was lucky to have a dad that exposed these type of movies to us when we were young including troy, braveheart, we were soldiers, saving private ryan, black hawk down, wind talkers, the patriot, and other action packed films.
The cliff fight scene still holds up nearly 30 years latter as one of the best fight scenes in movie history. I remember when this movie came out, it was the first movie I remember my old man buying because he loved it so much.
I’ll never forget when I first saw this movie when it was in the movie theaters. It was such an intense and riveting movie with an incredible soundtrack.
I come from England I have watched documentaries ( if I’ve spelt that right ) I have read books on the native American. Indians. I have a lot of respect for these people.
Wow...! Just seeing these scenes, the photography knocks you out... and the performances, the music.. and one is moved all over again, just from these clips.... an outstanding movie....!
