I used to watch every show with my dad. He was getting along in years, and was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer. I knew the week-end after he passed and I heard the theme song, I was gonna lose it and I did. Strange how something so simple as a comedy show can have such a profound effect on a life.
I am the same. My Grandad loved watching this sitcom. Even now when he has died, I can still remember how much joy this show brought to people like him.
I remember watching watching LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE with my late father. Sometimes when I see the repeats & hear the theme tune i think of my late Mother & Father & it tears me up inside too. God bless them both.
Very well read. I adore this show, it's a pity he didn't make it to the end. Bill Owen was the right man for the job. He, Peter Sallis and Brian Wilde will be sorely missed. "So let's toast the vintage years, the last of the summer wine"☺
bill owen was an accomplished lyric writer. try searching for a song he wrote called "so lucky" (in my life). it was sung by an english comedian called freddie (parrot face) davis. the lyrics are very moving, as a tribute to his wife (i think). R.I.P those of the cast who have departed.
I watched this with my Grampy and Compo reminds me so much of my Grampy so sad that the actors who played Foggy, Cleggy n Compo have all sadly passed away, the new episodes after Bill Owen died were not as good to watch any more, the tribute epidsode to Bill Owen made me cry n when its my Grampy's time up (don't want to think about it but sadly no one lives forever) where he will sadly no longer be with me I don't think I will be able to watch any Last of the Summer Wine coz it will just upset me too much to watch. makes me upset jus thinkin bout it n typin it. Jus like Compo my Grampy will always be a ledgend, I have never got over my late Great Granny n my late Great Gramps but when I lose my Grampy it will hit me jus as hard as my late Grandparents coz I am very close to all relatives on my Mums side of the family.
Thank you for sharing this. What a beautiful reading of the lyrics to this incredibly moving song. Last of the Summer Wine is my favorite TV show of all time and Bill Owen and Peter Sallis were brilliant!
Thank you David woods coz I like these old actors I think that aer so great in there acting and so beautiful just beautiful These old actors are gone but not for gotten rest in peace every one amen
I loved every episode, my favorite was season 21, I loved the way the village came together to remember one of their own, even the song tribute to Bill Owen.
Bill was my favorite on the show. And it’s difficult to select any one of them as the best as they were all wonderful characters. Compo and Nora rate right up there with Liz and Dick, Romeo and Juliet.
I want this theme tune played at my funeral I love last of the summer wine my favourite comedy series love compo, Nora batty, wally, sid, ivy, Wesley and all the others 💟💟
My father and I watched this together... LOVED it. When Bill passed and it was written into the show, I cried through the WHOLE episode. "Don't delete it Dad". The next show, the funeral, I cried through the WHOLE episode. "Don't delete it Dad". The next show, I think they had three honoring Compo, I cried through the WHOLE episode. "Don't delete it Dad".Then they put a new character in, too soon. The new guy was probably fantastic in his role. We watched it... I cried for Compo through the WHOLE episode. "Don't save it Dad".I've watched these beautiful tributes to the show, to the wonderful people that have passed through, touching us all. And, yes, I'm listening to the whole songs..."Save this video Dad".BTW, I'm from Kentucky, USA... My husband was from New Zealand and LOVED these shows so much... we never found it before he passed. But we are so happy he mentioned this show and more.
I want this played at my funeral as I love the last of the summer wine, along with Heaven can Wait by Meatloaf, if everyone cared by nickleback and finally happiness by Sir Ken Dodd
@johnnycomic Thank you for the information. I knew a little about Bill but not much and I had never heard that he was a song writer. He was an amazing comedian.
Enjoyed that, enjoyed every episode ever made so thanks to auntie beeb for make all of the series and thanks to Holmfirth for hosting something so wonderful
Bill Owen, composed songs too, sang some in some of the episodes, the 1 thing we've all got in common, is death, with all the old actors and actresses of the early 20th century leaving us there is no 1 to replace them the actors and actresses from the 1970s on are nothing compared to those who started when Bill Owen, and the others did from the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s acting started to go down hill in the 1970s with odd exception, the only real talent belonged to those who started no later than 1960s with the odd exception as I mentioned, summer wine had its zenith in the 1980s, 1990s once Bill Owen, died that is was it Peter Sallis, tried but without Compo, he had no one to bounce off, like Ernie Wise, when Eric, died his comedy career was over, I ask all Bill Owen, fans to check out his films he was in even the cameos, he was brilliant he was in Carry On Sergeant, and left the series when the Carry On crew put him in the background giving him small unimportant scenes, it's now July A.D 2022, it's still being shown on Drama at the moment they're with Seymour, like the great Max Miller, once said, there'll never be another
I abosoultley love this programme my all time favourite always will be I want this played at start of my funeral along with heaven can wait by meatloaf and at the end I want happiness by ken dodd to be played ❤❤❤❤
@@malador1952 I grew up watching all the old comedy programmes like allo allo , are you being served, dad's army, keeping up appearances and as I said my favourite last of the summer wine I love them all but Summer wine has a special place in my heart
@@carolnichol2721 I also loved Keeping Up Appearances and Fawlty Towers. But Summer Wine was my favorite too. Oh yeah, and Are You Being Served. Excellent comedies, one and all.
Last of the Summer Wine was one of my favorite shows, especially when Bill Owen was on it. It was never the same after he died--not saying that it was not good but no one could have ever replaced Bill.
They don't show them much here anymore, just the later ones after Bill died. I still watch it even though I have seen most of them but it's not the same without Bill.
Yes, we never do know what they are going to show. It's on PBS. Used to be on on PBS in a couple of adjoining states so if you couldn't get it on one you could on the other one. Now it is only showing on one, at least so far as I know.
@chrisredfieldjm Thank you for the comment. We didn't get the current shows on public tv, we were actually several years behind what they were seeing in England. And I didn't even know Bill had died until about a year or so ago. He was great, one of the funniest guys on tv.
They don't make shows like Last of the Summer Wine and Bill Owen was one of a kind too. I loved the show and still liked it ok but it was better when he was on.
Thanks for the info but I have never heard of freeview. Is that something they have in the UK? I live in the US so if it is something they have there, other than BBC America, I am afraid I can't get it.
@malador1952 Thats how we found it, public tv PBS/OETA. My buddy found it in 01 or 02. I think he was 19 or 20 at the time. He passed on the word to me, and I showed it to my grandma. She has to watch it every evening before she goes to bed. I think shes seen it through three times, if not more. It takes a great show to entertain people from their late teen years to those in their mid 70s. Last of the Summer Wine, Sherolck Holmes, Dr. Who (the newer ones), public tv is getting some things right.
@sandyllb Sandy, you're welcome, glad you enjoyed it. Sorry to be so long to reply but my computer is in pieces at the moment so I don't always get my messages in a timely manner.
I knew a few fantasists when I was in the army and I understand that characters in sitcoms have to be exaggerated but Foggy was way over the top, both in FOTSW and LOTSW. Blamire was believable as an ex-soldier. He 'remembered with advantages' as Shakespeare wrote for Henry V's speech to his soldiers before Agincourt but he didn't have wild fantasies. My wife was a teacher for almost 40 years and thought that Seymour had all the mannerisms of a teacher.
@malador1952 I think you might be right. I'm working on a script myself, and it may turn out to be short film, but it's set in Oklahoma county. I'm trying my best to do my salute to Roy Clarke, and all the rest who made Last of the Summer Wine a success! I'm trying not copy any way but do it in a manner to give praise to that show.
